View Full Version : 500 dollar upgrade?

This seems a bit steep to pay 500PP to move from a verandah to a deluxe verandah? When I look at future bookings the verandah is 830 and a deluxe is 1100, so it would seem that 300PP would be the price...

I am sailing OCT25th and wanted to upgrade if possible and was told this prices... I would think that since it is close to sailing, that the prices would be less... Does this sound about right? Thank you.

You will need to provide additional detail to get opinions on the upgrade price.

You could be going from a VF to an SA or anything in between. Also the itin and length would be relevant.

They will charge as much as they think they can get. The cruiser can say yes or no.....vote with their wallet.

Blackroze,
What sailing are you looking at that has the Deluxe Verandah Suite for $1100? I've looked at all the Nov. sailings and the $1100 would buy a Superior Verandah Suite but not the Deluxe with all the amenities. At $500 I would recomend to my client to go for it if they really wanted the suite and all the amenities. Good luck!:)

You really need to give us more information.

Ship?

Sailing Date?

Length of cruise?

What cabin category are you presently in?

I guess I dont know the categories much, but based on the website there are listings for four categories? Inside, outside window, verandah and deluxe verandah. Those are the options... So we paid the almost 900 for a veranda ve5062 or something real close to that. We look at the deluxe verandah, based on the website, it shows it costing only a few hundred more, instead of 500. So I guess that it all depends on what room you choose??? We are sailing the OCT 25th 08 cruise and were just thinking about getting a deluxe. It is our 10 year anniversary, so I wanted to surprise my wife!

Speaking of surprises, I bought her a new ring and am doing the vowel renewal ceremony, but was curious if anyone had any ideas as to how to give her this new ring? Thank you very much!

VE -- to either an SC, SB or SA is an excellent price!!

At the ceremony -- just ask her to slip off the old ring right before the vows as you want to slip it on her during the ceremony. Put the old ring in your pocket and then at aprropriate monent you can slip on the new ring!!

Congratulations on 10 years of wedded bliss!

You missed one, Superior Verandah Suite is between Verandah and Deluxe Verandah Suite. The $1100 is for the Superior, $500PP is a great price to go from a VE to a Deluxe Suite.

Don't know if this helps you or not but this was our recent expereince.
We booked the Osterdam for NOV 8th MX Riviera though our usual on-line TA (not though HAL) - originally booked a Cat. "VD" - decided to upgrade by our own preference to an "SY" suite and the additional cost/ person was $200.00 each. At the time it seemed reasonable to me for the extra space.

Based on OP's statement not controlling for sailing date (unless its a huge) high demand holiday week or something - $500/ pp for anupgarde within a Veranda is a little steep. JMHO

It is REALLY necessary to say which ship you are sailing on - there are more categories on the Vista ships (Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Noordam) than on the S & R class ships.

$500pp to move from a VE (their current cabin) to a SA, SB or SC is great.

For Westerdam this Sunday we were upgraded from a VE to a VA then offered an upsale to SS for $149pp which we took. It was $299pp for a SA but felt we would be very happy with the SS.

Wow, we get upsell offers all the time, but I have never seen anything from the V's go to the S's at that rate, the ship must have room left. The sailing the OP is talking about is overbooked by 10 or 11 staterooms currently...

We originally booked a specific cabin in an SY class for our cruise 10/18.
A few weeks ago, my TA sent me an email at work that we could upgrade to an SB or SA for $299/pp. The TA provided the cabin #'s that we could pick from. We took it.
Could I have bought the cabin cheaper if I'd booked that catagory earlier? No. (I got a really good rate booking 18 months ahead - couldn't touch that rate now)
For us, paying the extra $299pp was still a great deal considering the way prices have gone.

It started at $349PP on the 10/25 Oosterdam for upgrades to SA/Sb/SC from the SZ/SY/SS then went down to $299. Offers today for V's to the SA/SB/SC were $499PP and we had a few make that jump.

I have never had an upsell. I have had upgrades, but was not asking for them. I booked our first HAL guarantee for a VF. As long as I have a balcony I am fine. Would I be excited for an upgrade? You bet!! I booked two VF guarantees; I take one cabin with our daughter and my husband takes our son. We hope to end up near each other. This is all part of the adventure:)

Make sure your bookings are cross referenced, they will always try to get you close together if they are.

Now I'm confused, 5062 is a VF category on the Oosterdam... If it is 5062, it is pretty far forward but not too bad (I like mine on the stern so everything else is too far forward for me!) and it can hold up to 4 passengers, pretty much a standard verandah stateroom.

If it was me, I'd go for the upgrade and snag SC4180, one of the aft corner suites, it was available earlier today...

Could not agree more.

Blackroze,

The room Heavenly is talking about has a HUGE verandah with full size table two lounge chairs and wraps around for a panoramic view. In addition you are in a "real" suite with free laundry and dry cleaning access to the Neptune lounge and other perks.

Ten year anniversary, new ring, splurge man. The money will probably just disappear in the markets anyway. :o

Yes HAL will get as much as it can for an upsell. Is that good business. NO. When anyone finds out that the actual price increase is less than they are offering for an upsell it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. They did this to us last April and it still bothers me. All they are doing is alienating good customers with the feeling that HAL will gouge them whenever possible. Its not good business, its very short sided and the home office becomes their own worst enemy.

We were upselled last June on the Westerdam. From VF to SA. It was great! Had the use of the Neptune Lounge, breakfast in the Pinnacle, laundry, etc. Would I book that category? No, but I would buy the upsell. These offers are broadcast out to a bunch of people, our TA happened to call us in time.

I booked an SY category guarantee on the 11/1/08 Oosterdam and got an SS category room. Two days ago, I got an opportunity to buy an upsell room to a category SC - SA but it was $459.00 per person. Didn't think that was justified cause also my other friends that I am sailing with couldn't use the Neptune Lounge either. Thought that seemed a little steep for $900.00 to go up to that category and I could use that money better served elsewhere.

So, I am staying in my SS category room. Sounds like a good room also.

Blackroze - What you've been offered is an upSELL. You pay for those. Usually from one category to a higher one, like verandah to suite. An upGRADE is free, usually within the same category, maybe from a VF to a VA.

This past summer for Eurodam's inaugural, John & I were booked in a G-category, which is oceanview (obstructed). We had previously cruised Noordam in a VD & loved the balcony, but couldn't afford it for this European itinerary.

A few weeks prior to the cruise, the TA calls & says HAL is offering an upSELL to a verandah cabin for $600/pp. We thought WAAAAAAY to high. We could have paid that price when we initially booked. We made a ridiculous low-ball counter offer, knowing it would be refused. Coupla days later she comes back & says HAL's offering the verandahs for $400/pp (or something like that). We still wouldn't pay that but upped our offer & wanted a guarantee of at least a VD cabin. A few days later we get an offer of $200/pp for a VA cabin & she can tell me which cabins are available. We got to choose which one we wanted!

With the price reductions we had gotten over the course of the previous year, we still wound up paying a bit less than what we had originally booked at. :)

So, make a counter offer. HAL can only say No. But you might get it. Let us know how it turns out.

And I like Krazy Kruzer's suggestion for how to give your sweetie her new ring. John & I also cruised for our 10th & did the vow renewal. It was really special. Congrats.

We are currently booked on a 7 day carribean cruise on the Eurodam in a HH oceanview obstructed guarantee. We go a email from HAL offering us a SA Deluxe veranda suite on deck 7 cabin midship. The cost for this upgrade is $500.00 per person. Is this a good deal and worth the additional $1000.00???

Thanks

for a SA from a no balconey I myself would definitlly, (in cad $)
You can live like a milionaire for a week,
some might not, but I would for the chance of trying a suite like that.
What sailing is this end of Feb, I phoned to see about getting an Upsell
and they said they were fully booked, but put me on a waiting list.

I would hold off. That $500 might turn to $250 before long. A thousand more for a week doesn't sound all that great a deal to me. That being said, if you'd really like to try the suite life for the week, then go for it.

HAL just offered us a huge upgrade for $500.00pp from a HH obstructed oceanview to a SA Deluxe Veranda midhip on deck 7 with all the perks. Apparantly this offer is only for Oceanview Cabins no other category, I guess they overbooked the oceanview cabins?

This sounds like a pretty decent deal and I would go for it. I always book an SA when cruising with my husband (he's paying) but when cruising alone I book down and would jump on this if I was paying. The perks and space it worth it.

The difference in price between your cabin and an SA would usually be at least $1,000 each. It seems like a good deal.

What are the perks of the Neptune lounge? The concierge there is available to assist you with anything that the front desk can do. She can make Pinnacle Grill reservations for you, change currency, accept your disembarkation forms, arrange for delivery of hors d'oeuvres to your stateroom, etc. There are worktables, large screen television, library, sofas and chairs, yummy refreshments throughout the day and wi-fi (at the prevailing rate.)

For us, it would be worth it to pay the $1000 for the upgrade. Also when you're in a suite you can have breakfast in the Pinnacle (same menu as the DR but just more elegant, less crowded service), and free laundry and dry cleaning. It's really nice to have breakfast or lunch on your verandah.

Our final payment is due in 4 weeks. We sail in 100 days. When would be the best time for us to try to have our agent contact HAL for an UpSELL-- we are ion OOSTERDAM== category VD balcony and want an SY or SS suite?

Any suggestion on what is the best timing to do so. My theory is at final payment quite a few people will be cancelling this 24 day Med cruise. With the economy so bad and plane fares at $1400-$2000 each, my thought is their will be several cancellations at that time?

What do you think?

One other question.....if you take an upsell, would you still end up getting your perks you received at your original booking.....example: ship board credit, pinnacle grill dinner etc.
