Happy Thirsty Thursday!

Safe travels to everyone this weekend. For those coming to Michigan, WELCOME! We'll be camping this weekend. Looking forward to the beer or vino around the campfire (more likely both). Still trying to get Gordie to have a whole glass. His usual practice is to take a sip of mine, make a face, then wash it down with his beer.

I hope everyone has a fun, safe long weekend!

Denise - thanks, heading to the airport in a few hours. Non-stop to Grand Rapids :)....If you see a small jet fly over head, and you see a big guy crunched up in his window seat,....that'd be me.

Janis/Jill - enjoyed the movie last night . I told Jeanne, as if we weren't "pumped up" enough already, but this movie was our official kick-off to the "serious" countdown to Dream, Dream, Dream & Rome. We're at 147 days and counting :). Before you know it, we'll be at the magic 120 day (4 month) mark, then shortly after that, under 100 days :D...

All - I just popped over to John Heald's blog, and he posted my e-mail to him! I asked him a question wrt to my plans in Venice. Check it out, it's on the Wed May 20th blog (I can't share it with Jeanne though, for obvious reasons...).

Take care Sogno, Sogno, Sogno. Not sure if I'll be able to blog while up in Michigan, but if I can't, I'll be back on here next Tues or Wed.

Arrivederci,

Marty & Jeanne

Hi everyone - Kathy and I are staying at the Hotel Cosmoplita in Rome before we go on the cruise. I see there are a few people staying at this hotel as well. Does anyone have any openings for two more people on a shuttle to the port? If so, we'd love to join in on it.

Also going to see Angels & Demons tonight.

We're having a picnic/pool party in our community on Monday. Hope the rain holds off for one day. Seems that we are in our summer mode already. Rain every afternoon. This does'nt usually start until June but is about 2 weeks early this year. We needed it desperately as we have had drought conditions. That leads to brush fires which can get out of hand very easily if the wind picks up.

Got some Rick Steves books from the library. Want to plan our days in Rome after the cruise. I figured I would plan the activities and sites to see so that we don't have to backtrack and waste time.

'Buza' in Dubrovnik sound cool. Either 4 or 5 o'clock is fine with us. Biggest disappointment is being in Flornce on Monday and the museums are closed. At least the ones I wanted to see.

Hi Marty,
I received a reply back from RomaShuttle:
if you have about 1big and 1small piece of luggage per person then the price is 180 euro.

So it looks like our second stop is adding quite a bit to the price.

Lindsey and I are going to bow out of the shuttle and go with our original plan --taking the train. Hopefully, you all will be able to get a better rate without us in the mix. I can't see driving up the price for all --and for us to pay the difference.. well, it's not worth it. The train is way cheaper.

Thank you for including us though.

Glad you enjoyed Angels and Demons. Now when you get to Rome, you can see all the cool places in person.

Ciao all,

Denise - I'll look for your sign when we fly over...I'm still really bummed that we won't be able to get together this weekend:( Have a great time at the cottage and happy furniture shopping.

Vicki - I'm with Gordie, I'll take a beer over vino anyday. I also make a funny face after tasting it! Have fun camping this weekend.

Marty - I'm glad you liked the movie. I'll check out Heald's blog as soon as I can. Have a great trip.

Judy - I hope the rain doesn't ruin your party. It sounds like fun. We'll see you at the Buza!

Jilly - I wanted to take the train also, but DH said there will be no shlepping luggage for us in Europe since we have been waiting for this trip for 30 years. What are you up to this weekend?

Anna & Terry - Where are you? Hope everything is good and you are just to busy having fun somewhere...

Everyone - Have a great weekend!

Hi guys,
Have been really busy. Staying late at school getting tons of paperwork completed and things packed, 16 days to go but not all of those are days I can stay late. Then going to gym or walking by the beach, I'm trying to lose those extra pounds before our Triumph cruise. Cleaning for company this weekend. Just checked in before going to bed. Hopefully I get a little down time this weekend. The weather here has been spectacular.

Hi Janis, Even though Miss Lindsey and I will be gone for 24 days total, I am enforcing the 1 large bag, 1 small carry-on rule for each of us. So, hopefully, it won't be too difficult to manage.

I got new luggage for our trip last year from Costco. The brand is Swiss Army. It's purple, so it's easy to see at the airport. Anyway, I think it's very well made and it can store so much and has a lot of clever little storage areas built in. Had I not felt the need to bring my entire wardrobe last year, I could have just used this one suitcase. Plus, you can sort of zip it down so it fits as a carry-on when you have less stuff. It came with a great carry-on to match that slides over the handle of the luggage.

I told Lindsey she could only bring 3 pairs of shoes in her suitcase, she looked at me like I was insane. Honestly, I brought more last year and I ended up wearing only my 'favorites' anyway. Plus, they have laundry on the ship and we will use that quite a bit. What's a $100 in the overscheme of things at this point. LOL

I am actually looking forward to doing a load of laundry in Rome. LOL I haven't experienced that yet.

This weekend I am going to try and get all my outside stuff done--painting shutters, weeding etc.. And my sister opened her pool so I imagine I will be there for a bit.

Well, I better get to work. Happy Friday everyone. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend with fabulous weather!

If I am following all the posts correctly, it appears you are arranging a shuttle to the port from rome. We are staying at the Cosmopolita (where it looks like others are staying) and was wondering if you have an opening for two people on the shuttle you are arranging (or have arranged). If you do, could we join your group??

Ciao from Michigan Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Great flight! Had a great seat, plenty of legroom. Non-stop is the only way to go...I'm really glad Continental has this flight :).

Terry/Maryann2 - good question. However, Jeanne is very busy with her master's program, so I don't think she looks at this board (only when I show her). I keep her informed on our group and plans and she's looking forward to meeting the members of Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Jill - no problem; again, thanks for looking into RomaShuttle.

Judy/etexbeachbum - Judy, I remember you said you are staying at Hotel Cosmo post-cruise. Etexbeachbum, were you guys also staying there? If yes, I may just go ahead and line up the hotel's shuttle service...

Elaine (Hartliem) - we are arranging a shuttle from the port (after cruise) to Rome. I think you are looking for a shuttle to the port from Hotel Cosmo. Check with Vicki & Gordon (Yooperwoody); I think they are staying at Hotel Cosmo before the cruise but I'm not sure what transportation they have arranged to the port...

Janis- thanks. Hope you're enjoying Michigan also. Weather was nice yesterday afternoon, but kind of cloudy today. Supposed to clear back up tomorrow and Monday :).

Janis/Denise - I've just been visiting family & spending time with my Mom. We went to a favorite restaurant yesterday, Bear Lake Tavern (north side of Muskegon Lake). Had to get my fried lake perch . Also, stumbled on this local Michigan brewed beer called Oberon, which a waitress told me was part of Blue Moon. An awesome wheat beer ...

Terry - I'm envious ;), the Triumph and a Princess cruise coming up! You deserve it with all the hard work you are putting in closing out the school year!

Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day weekend. I'll check back in before I leave Michigan. I fly home to Houston on Tuesday...

Arrivederci,

Check out this website for a transfer from Port to Hotel. Prices seem reasonable. Can't remember if this is the same as the hotel shuttle.

Denise/Vicki - you guys should've told me I was coming to an area with some of the best breweries in the WORLD . See link below...

http://www.ratebeer.com/RateBeerBest/bestbrewers_012009.asp

Founders in Grand Rapids (#7 in the world), Bells in Kalamazoo (#11) & The Livery in Benton Harbor (#27). For reference, I saw Great Lakes Brewery come in at #29, and I know how good their beer is, as it is in Cleveland and Jeanne & I would go to their brewpub when I would see her when she still lived in Cleveland...

The Oberon wheat beer I stumbled upon is brewed by Bells (Kalamazoo).

Who woulda thunkit? Mmm, something else I just learned about my original home state of Michigan

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Our camping weekend was very nice and relaxing.

Hartliem, yes we are staying at the same hotel on the 14th. It was actually Jody (josy777) who was arranging and booking the shuttle to the port on the 15th. They were going to pick us up and Ed/Kelly (eekconway). Neither one has posted in while, but I think both are planning weddings which are happening very soon. I'm sure they'll both be back after the big day. So to answer your question, I'm not sure if Jody has booked the shuttle yet or not. Ed was looking into a shuttle from the port directly to the airport on the 27th for us too.

Marty, yes we both like Oberon. Well I like it, Gordie loves it. It's a summer wheat and they only brew it for the summer. They have big "Oberon" parties downstate when it comes out.

Have a great day everyone!

Vicki/Gordon - nice. I'm very impressed with the brewing power of the trolls :D;)!!

Well, I have had a wonderful visit with my mom and family and enjoyed seeing western Michigan again. This is absolutely a beautiful state, however, I've lived in the south so long (Florida, Texas) that my blood has thinned out, so I don't know if I could handle the Michigan winters ...
Nice to be able to come up here and escape the heat & humidity of Houston in the summer though .

Denise - look up around 5:45 today, I'll be crunched up in the same kind of plane (Continental Express), except on the right side this time! Coming in, the plane did follow the western coast of Michigan which was pretty cool.

Well, when I get home, it'll be time to firm up all plans (that need to be firmed up) for post-cruise and get our documents going :). Can't wait until we break the 100 day mark!

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and God bless our troops, past & present.

Marty, I agree with you on winter in Michigan. I think my blood was too thin for last year's winter. Thanks for the info on beers, I passed that information along to Joe. I am the wine specialist in our family. Joe thinks it's the whining specialist.:p
Hope you didn't run into that storm we had about 5:45 today. The sky was almost black and the rain came down sideways with very strong winds.

I have been trying to research sites in Rome, so when I see a fountain, I'll know the name and a little bit of history. I'm doing the same with churches and people. I'll probably forget it all before the cruise, but hopefully I'll remember some of it.

Ciao everyone!

I hope everyone had good time this weekend. We had a great vacation. It was so good to see my DD and where she lives and works. It was so beautiful there! There were so many trees and a lake around every corner. I loved flying over Michigan and seeing all that land. We have a lot of trees here, but not much open land anymore. Haslett has a small town feel, but it has everything you could need closeby, well except for a Nordstroms, but we did go to a Coach outlet and bought some cute stuff. We went to Detroit and ate at a authentic Greek restaurant in Greektown that was excellant. We also loved the West Coast especially the towns of Saugatuk & South Haven. We walked along the shoreline and got our feet wet in Lake Michigan. I was surprised that it was fairly warm water. It was 78 degrees outside and we got a little sunburned.
My DD lives in a cute apt. on the third floor and when you are out on the balcony, it feels like you are in a tree house. The only problem is that she lives about 100 feet from the start of the trail to a nature preserve, so we went for a walk one evening that only lasted for 10 minutes because there were so many mosquitos that we ran home. They really love my DH, so he has bites all over him. The only other bad things were that my DD did not get any sports channels on her tv, so we couldn't watch any of the games and saying goodbye to her:( Overall, we had a great time shopping, eating, talking, sightseeing and relaxing. Since we got airfare with miles, we stayed with my DD, and no rental car charges, it was a realy inexpensive vacation. What more could you ask for?

Denise - I looked, but I couldn't see your sign from the plane. Hope you had a good weekend. How did your furniture shopping go?

Marty - With all that beer, do you really remember your vacation? JK

Vicki - Glad you had fun camping. Where do you go?

Judy - Did it rain on your party? I never forget the men & women who serve/served our country. To me, Memorial Day is a very sad, yet proud day.

I don't know what anyone did this weekend, but hope you had fun!

Hey Jilly,

My DH loves Swiss Army luggage, but I have never seen purple ones. I am a Samsonite girl. We are only bringing 1 large suitcase & 1 small carryon also. I am only bringing 3 pairs of shoes in my suitcase and wearing my tennies. I am going to try to only bring 4 pants/capris (depending on the weather), about 7 tops, 2 dresses (not formal), 2 sweaters, 2 light jackets, one lightweight rain coat, a bathing suit and a coverup. We'll see how that goes, but I do know that I will only want to wear my favorites, so we will be doing laundry on the ship on every sea day. Time is going by quickly. It will be here before we know it.

Painting shutters doesn't sound like much fun, but it sure feels good when it's done.

Did you go to your sisters house last weekend?

Yay, it's Hump Day already! Gotta love these short weeks.

Janis, it sounds like you enjoyed your trip to Michigan. As mentioned earlier, both our son and daughter live in Lansing. It does seem like the best of both worlds, small town atmosphere with big city amenities. I enjoy Greektown area too. We live about 4 hours north of Lansing. Oh, yeah, you have to watch out for those Michigan mosquitoes, they'll carry you away! They haven't popped out up here yet, but it's raining today, so I expect they'll be in full force by the weekend. And, thanks for the packing tips. My goal is to fit everything in one suitcase. I have every expectation of having laundry done on the ship. If you're a VIP they'll do it for you. We did this on our last cruise and it was wonderful. You just have to plan ahead as it takes a day to get it back.

Welcome aboard NCGrammie4.

No rain on our Memorial Day picnic. Yayyyyy. Our community is a 55 and older mobile home park with canals and access to the Gulf. We do not have a waterfront lot but do have one of the biggest in the park. Took 6000 sq feet of sod to do the lawn nad yard. We have friends with boats so it ia lot less work. Jack says a boat is like having a second wife!

A lot of the 305 households go North for the summer but we still had 55 folks at the picnic. And the food, oh the food. Feels like a cruise with 6 long tables loaded with all kinds of yummy dishes. Seems like everything we do here involves food and/or booze. Jack and I and Ethel and her DH are integral parts of the party crowd. When out kids call they always are amazed at the dinners and parties we either host or get invited too. As I always say, I didn't move here to vegetate!!!!

I found a shuttle from FCO to the port for 100 euros for two people. The split gets even lower if we add some more folks. So anyone needing to get from FCO on the 15th early (we land at 8am), just let me know and I can change the ressie.

Hard to believe that May is almost over. Where did it go??

Sorry I've been absent from the boards. I've been keeping up with the new posts every day, but haven't had a chance to add anything new. I think I have everything under control for the wedding on Friday (at least I hope so). I now know what Julia Roberts was feeling in "Runaway Bride" :)

Vicki/Ed - We do have the shuttle confirmed for the 15th with the six of us to the port with AllAroundItaly. We kept it at 6 since the price difference wasn't much if we added 2 more and we wanted room for all our luggage.

I plan to get into full cruise planning mode as soon as the wedding is over.

Wish me luck everyone. I'll make sure I get a picture posted after we get back from our mini honeymoon in Duluth next week.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Sounds like we'll be on the real "Love Boat". We even have a couple in our group who celebrated their 50th last year. This is kind of a delayed celebration for them, as they lost everything in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and have been rebuilding. Time to get back to enjoying life again.
Can't wait to meet y'all.

Welcome ncgrammie, I talked to you on the Carnival Connection. I haven't posted there since I last posted to you about being from New Orleans and me from Ponchatoula. You mention your daughter was coming to the Strewberry festival. Did she enjoy it? We will be celebrating our 50th on the cruise which was on April 11 this year. I think you said some of the people with you where from Gretna, we moved up to Ponchatoula 8 years ago from Gretna.

Jody and Chris

Jody and Chris, We'll be anxiously awaiting the pictures! Congratulations and Best Wishes on your wedding. Our thoughts and Prayers are with you! Denise and Joe

Yes, it has been a whle since last post. But no worries we're looking forward to this more than you can imagine. Not the relaxing laying on the beach honeymoon Kelley envisioned but, shes very excited to be there too. Like Jody, been kinda preoccupied with all the planning for the upcoming big day, its been somewhat challenging since its a weekend wedding 3+ hrs away from home. I don't remember who asked but, the big day is Sept 19.
Vicki - we're all set Jody has pre-cruise handled & I have post cruise transfer handled.
I have to check back to see whoose on board for the excusions I have scheduled & will post again to let anyone whoose interested know if there is still any openings availible.

Also, is anyone arriving the morning of the 13th and going to the Hotel Triano? If so, we would be sharing the cost of the shuttle from the hotel.

[quote=yooperwoody;19703699]Yay, it's Hump Day already!

Happy Hump Day Vicki,

I forgot that your children live in Lansing. Do you and Gordie go there often?

I think the way to get everything in one suitcase is to buy a bigger one! Just kidding.

Ed and Kellie, Sept 19th sounds like a great day. It gives you a little time to get adjusted before the cruise!

Vicki, Yes, we have no shortage of Mosquitoes down here. I think all the rain we've had dosen't help!

Janis, We did get furniture, but I'm not completely sure I like it. It's a little difficult because I want to get something that is comfortable, and that looks good. But, I don't want it to look too good to the people who took my other set. I don't want the new set to get stolen too!

We get insurance through Insuremytrip.com

You mentioned your dresses weren't formal. Are you going to take formal or semi-formal dresses? I will probably take a couple of more semi-formal type dresses.
That said, the dresses I'm thinking of packing don't take up alot of space in my suitcase. I don't get a chance to dress-up much, so I'd like to take advantage of the formal nights on the cruise.

All,
What are you wearing on formal nights?

Marty, Where are you? You're not still flying around in that itsy-bitsy plane?

As far as suitcases, we bought Jeep spinners from walmart last year, I love them and they still look brand new. I think we only paid about 40 dollars or so for each one.

Been a long time I have to catch up and read the previous posts...got a little overwhelmed with the cruise. and got caught up with being a new grandma! woooo hoooo! hahaha! he is 2 months now....but im back to reality and need to get back into planning this cruise! hope i didnt miss a lot....okay so im arriving on the 14 at about 7pm staying at hotel Lirico near Termini Station. any one coming in at that time too were flying Swiss Air.

Im planning on taking the train to the port the next day maybe boarding about 2pm just to give it time...if anyone wants to meet up at termini station and do the same were up for the company! also looks like we already have the Naples excursion planned out with the Conways so were set with that. Messina is another interesting port we would like to visit but not sure if bus, train, or a group want to form to go together....let me know if anyone is interested in that or if anyone knows about the transportation how to reach it. =)

Janis
Hi Janis,
I haven't decided what to pack just yet but I do know I am bringing dresses to wear for dinner. They are the slinky sort and take up almost no room and don't wrinkle. (Think Kohl's summer dresses) I may bring a cocktail dress too. Capris are great and can be dressed up or down so they will be coming with me.

It was really hot here over the weekend so I decided to work indoors and did some major housecleaning. Moving furniture, cleaning closets etc.. I feel much better now. :D (sort of an organization freak here)

Called my sister and her teenage boys had all their friends over so decided not to go over.. not my idea of a relaxing day. They usually use the pool a lot at the beginning of the season but after a month or so they are off doing other things and my sister and I can float in piece.

We've certainly had a lot of activity here today. It's nice to hear what everyone is up to.

You are right, the cruise will be here before we know it. I was counting paychecks until cruise and after tomorrow, there are only 9 more. I better really stick to my vow of poverty til the cruise.

For formal nights I think I'll bring one long black skirt then take a few sparkly tops, lightweight and non-wrinkle. What are the guys doing? Tom prefers to dress for dinner too but taking a suit and dress shoes adds to the weight of luggage. Not sure about renting a tux or just doing the dress shirt and tie thing. Maybe a sports jacket that he could wear on the plane?

DD,

That is what my DH calls you because he can't remember if your Deanne or Denise. Even I have to think about it before I start writing.

I like to cable lock all of my backyard furniture together to make it really difficult for someone to steal and I keep it covered with ugly covers so no one would think there was something nice under there.

Thanks for the insurance info.

I am taking a black dress that is more semi-formal, but can be worn on formal night. Since this is such a port intensive cruise, we are thinking more about really relaxing in the evenings. We love getting some food in the buffet and sitting up on deck watching a movie on the big screen. In the Caribbean I like getting cracked crab legs, pizza and a beer and watching a football game. Will there be 3 formal nights?

Thanks for the info on the Jeep Spinners from Walmart. I will definately check them out for the DH.

Good morning!

Claudia - Congrats on being a grandma! I think we should all have grandbabies first, then kids. They're much more fun! Secondly, both Ed and I checked into a Mt. Etna/Taormina tour in Messina. It's back a few pages. Not quite sure what we're doing there yet. I sure would like to see the Valley of the Temples (?) I think that's what it's called, too lazy to go look right now. But it is on the opposite side of the island, so I don't think there's enough time.

I'm impressed with all you listers and the packing. I usually just grab all my shorts, tops, shoes and throw them in the suitcase and figure out what I'll wear when I get there. I know I can't do that this time, it will take much more planning. I need to take a course in planning and listing.

Yeah, where is Marty. I sure hope he got to see the Wings win last night. It's now off to the finals!

Claudia & Vicki - As much as I'd like to see Mt Etna & Taormina, I"ve heard & read that it takes approx 1 1/2 -2hrs to get to Mt Etna then like 45mins to Taormina & I think it was like 1hr back to Messina. I think we only get like 1hr at Mt Etna(not enough time to go to the top/crater) & like maybe 2hr at Taormina. All things considered, thats like 1/2 our time would be spent driving. Unless someone has some other information or idea, we're leaning toward just going to Taormina, they have the Greek Theatre, Cafes, Cannolis, & a few Beaches. I'm gonna look to see how much a transfer to and from would cost. Claudia, Good to see you back on here & congrats on the Grandchild.

Ed, I'm going to check with Gordie on this. He'd like to see the leaning tower in Pisa, but in my reading it says to take a pit stop and see then move on, that there's not much else there. So far that's the only thing we had planned to do, not knowing it wouldn't take that long. So, if its not that important, we may skip it and jump on with your tour. I'll let you know tomorrow. I may have to promise that I'll bring a beer for Gordie though.

Yeah vicki, not to rain on your parade but I've heard & read the same about the leaning tower. Other than taking the touristy pic posing like your trying to push it back up, not to much else there. One other note, I don't really enjoy wine either. Whenever we go to the wineries here on Long Island, Kelley packs me a cooler full of beer too, so Gordy wouldn't be alone. hahaha

Ed and Vicki, We went to Mt. Etna the last time we were there. I think you're right. It is a long drive up alot of winding roads, then you get there and see the crater for about 15 minutes then you drive back down. To me anyway it's much prettier from afar. Taormina, on the other hand I would not want to miss.

Jill, Your packing list sounds like mine. Jeans, capri's, shirt's, sweater's, rain gear, and stuff for formal night.

One thing that may be important is wear stuff you can layer. Mornings may be cool, but by afternoon it may be hot. When we were on the Miracle the public rooms were chilly. So you might want to pack a sweater or wrap, just for the ship. Again the most important thing for me is comfortable walking shoes!

Denise

I used ziplock bags last year-They worked pretty well too. I put my 'foundation' garments in them because it freaks me out thinking about someone touching my stuff. Then, on the way home we used the bags to put breakables in so we wouldn't have a mess if a bottle broke.

I also brought a small roll of bubblewrap. I got it at Staples. It took up almost no room on the way over. We used it to wrap the wine etc.. before we put it inthe bags. Nothing broke.

Also, last year at the airport, you could buy all sorts of stuff duty free and as long as you left it sealed the way you bought it, you could carry it on. They sell EVERYTHING there. We did buy more wine and some food to bring home. I haven't heard that anything has changed since them.. but I will check at some point.

Janis, I am a major planner but for some reason, I can't decide on the clothes til the night before. I do have a list of 'stuff' I bring-like the power strip, a power converter, CDs to load the pics from the cameras, mini hand sanitizers etc...We even brought these mini toilet paper rolls. Now, we probably won't need them in our ports this time.. but we went to Egypt last year.. and we did need that there. (I could have also used a VAT of sanitizer after one of our stops but that is another story.):p

Happy Thursday Everyone.. Marty is right, gotta love these short weeks!!

During the holiday weekend, there was hardly a peep on this thread, so when I get back on tonight, it "blew up" :eek:. To catch up quickly;

Janis - with all those quality brewers, I had to partake ;). Kept it in check though; after all, was with mom :o.

Janis- yes insured; Travel Guard.

Jody & Chris - best of luck & congrats again on your wedding!
Claudia- congrats on the grand baby!

Shuttle from port to Hotel Cosmopolita (Rome) - besides Jeanne & myself, I think we have; Judy & Ethel & etexbeachbum & DW? Pls confirm (& if staying at Hotel Cosmo). Now that I am back, I'll go ahead & reserve the shuttle, once I have the group confirmed.

Vicki/Janis - didn't jump on here last night, but definitely watched the clinching game last night. VERY happy the "Winged White Walls" are rolling back to defend Lord Stanley's cup!! Intriguing that it is a rematch with Pittsburgh again. Who was the Pittsburgh fan on here? We might have to do a friendly DOD bet at sail-away (loser buys winner a DOD)!!

Janis/all - re men's wear on the ship; I will be packing light--> only a selection of Songo Thongos and for formal nights, a bow tie :o

Am I caught up? Sounds like planning is in full force. Once I get the transfer reserved from the ship to Hotel Cosmo, it will be time to look at excursions.

Oh, almost forgot, benevenuti ncgrammie 4! Fyi, some of us have posted our photos on the following site, so we can see what our shipmates look like (totally optional, of course);

I will check out that site that sounds like a good idea. will you be taking that route? maybe we can tag along on the ride up there.

Lindsey and I haven't quite decided --I originally was going to do that but then the beach was mentioned. Apparently there are quite a few nice beaches near the port. So, I'm looking into that as well. I will keep you posted and of course, you are welcome to tag along.

Hey Marty,

It sounds like you had a great time on your vacation.

I think Judy's DH is the Penguins fan. Can wait to watch the playoffs!

I thought you were going to write something serious about packing. Guess you got me. Will all your Sogno Thongos fit into your paper bag with your bow tie?

Lastly, can you tell me why you chose Travel Guard and have you used them before? I can't remember, have you been to Europe before?

Sorry Marty but I gotta go with Jack's (my DH) Pens Sat night. Just hope this is not a replay of last year.

Hi Janis - we just went with the travel insurance (TravelGuard) offered when we booked the cruise through Continentalcruises.com (getting more onepass miles by using them). No experience with them, but reading over the policy they sent, coverage looks fine. I normally would not bother with travel insurance, but with this cruise being so far away and so far off, we chose to go ahead and get the insurance.

I've been to Europe (when I was in college; Southhampton and Amsterdam), but never with a cruiseline. Thanks for the info on the Pens fans. Re Songo Thongos, yes, they do make packing a "breeze" (no bun..errrr....pun intended).

Hey Marty,

Thanks for the info on Travel Guard. It seems to be pretty popular.

The playoffs are just starting here and the pizza is ordered. Sorry to say, but I am going with the Penguins. I think it is boring when the same team wins alot. Denise - We are fine out here in earthquake land. I think they're kind of fun. The only one it upset was one of my cats. He kept walking around looking at things, wondering if they were going to move again. We hope you have fun this weekend at the cottage. It looks like it will be good weather. Can you call Carnival to find out how full the ship is? I know I can call Princess and they tell me how many passengers and the number of kids onboard.

Does anyone else want to vote on a time to meet up at the Cafe Buza in Dubrovnik? Either 4 or 5 pm?

Also, does anyone remember if Caroline (Liney1982) is doing her marathon this weekend?

Janis & Dick

Hey Everyone:

I've been MIA lately and have alot of catching up to do. I've been reading the weekly updates I get by email but reading them quickly on my commute to work means that I only feel less out of the loop ...

Josh and I are counting down to the cruise! We are very excited. Every spare penny we have is going towards it. I'm even accepting the extra work and responsibility at work as my way of "earning" my time away in October. Boy, am I going to enjoy it.

Thank you so much everyone for remembering me and my Charity Bike Ride! The Ride to Conquer Cancer is on June 13 and 14, so I have 2 weeks (1 full weekend left!) to train. Two weekends ago I completed my first 100km ride and I did it again today! I'm even going out for another ride tomorrow morning in order to get my body used to the burn I'm going to feel during two 100km rides back to back. Even more amazing than the leaps and bounds I've done with my training (I'm so not athetic) is that I have raised $2,700 so far for Cancer Research! Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers the next two weeks as I start to really prepare myself mentally and physically for this Ride!

I saw some of your posting formal wear / packing lists, etc. I don't have my packing list down up yet (I'll probably start after the Ride). I know that I will be bringing my Little Black Dress (best purchase ever) which can be dressed up or down with accessories and shoes, and my black and ivory cocktail dress for formal nights. I also have two dresses "transforming" dresses (can be tied to make them halters, off the shoulder, etc) that I will most probably bring to give me options. These dresses as well can be dressed up or down and can therefore be used for both dinners and during the day.

Once the Ride is over I'm hoping I will have more time to devote to cruise planning. Looking forward to catching up on the posts.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Cheers,
Caroline and Josh

Marty, Your Wings are up now 2-1.
Caroline, I can't imagine 100 miles! Heck sometimes I get antsy just doing 100 miles in the car.
We haven't used Carnival's insurance. It is actually cheaper to buy your own and you can check out different policies. We have used Princess's for our upcoming cuise because it was a better bargain.
I am a litlle paranoid about traveling overseas without insurance. I'm not worried about cancellation as much as medical. I've read and seen some horror stories about traveling without medical coverage so I get it for peace of mind. We have used insuremytrip to compare policies. I really wasn't sure what pre-existing conditions actually meant so I called them and when they explained I realized I have purchased coverage but would really not have been covered. If you have any problem, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc and your doctor sends you for blood work or changes medicine(even if lowering doses) and something happens that could be related to that the insurance company could deny your claim. That's why I either buy insurance right away or look for the insurance that covers pre-existing conditions as long as you buy the insurance by final payment. I've purchased Travel Guard, CSA, and HTH for different trips. I'm not sure how they are because luckily we've never had to use them.

The shoes were quite comfortable. I believe they cost about $12 for the entire cruise.

I hope Carnival rethinks the $70 limit for the fuel surcharge or that oil comes down.

We are really getting excited about our back to back. Barb noticed how slow the debarkation was in Baltimore than it is in Europe. It took over 3 hours to empty the Pride. The Freedom was clear a lot faster than that and a lot earlier. If I remember right debarkation is finished around 7:30am in Civi.

Wow, I can't beleive how much I missed in just a couple of days! I think I am all caught up now. Everyone seems to be busy for the summer. It is funny that some other people have packing lists. My husband, the engineer, made a VERY comprehensive list many cruises ago and we keep updating a little with every cruise. Of course it depends what type of cruise we are going on, scuba gear for the Caribbean, warmer things for Alaska, but I find it easier to cross things off that we don't need than to be constantly wondering what i forgot. It really saved us a few times when Ernie's dad was sick and we didn't know if we were going to be able to go until the last second. I could pack very quickly and without much thought.

We also were looking at MT. Etna and have come to the same conclusion that it is a bit too far. I was interested to hear that someone said it was nicer from a distance. We are thinking about renting a car for the day from Avis. They are located across the street from the port. The only snag is that they are closed in the afternoon and don't reopen until 4:30 the time we are supposed to be onboard. We are going to see if they will let us return the car a little early. It would be nice I think to be able to see the town and beaches etc. at our own pace. If not our backup plan is the train which seems to be cheap and easy.

Finally got the confirmation from the convent so that we are all set for pre and post cruise in Rome. It is located very close to the Spanish steps on Via Sistina. We stayed there last year and enjoyed it. We arrive on the 13th and leave on the 29th.

Happy planning everyone!

Diane, what is the name of the convent you are staying at? I stayed at Il Rosario last year which is near the Colisseum. The curfew never bothered me because I was always tired well before 11pm.They had a nice little terrace to sit outside.
I think that I will be using the train in Messina too.

Hello everyone, Have been very busy with refinancing, yard work, dewinterizing the camper and all the usual parties for graduation, start of summer, etc....

Time seems to be going very fast, maybe because I am busy. Hoping I have planned everything the best I can. I too have a packing list that I pull out. It just makes it easier so you don't forget something. My DH doesn't like to go super formal so tie and dress shirt/pants is about all I can wrangle out of him.

Marty I am happy your team is winning but they are hated by many Avalanche fans:) Remember the rats being thrown on the ice during Stanley Cup several years ago. Since we don't have pro sports teams here in Wyo you will find many Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies and Nuggets fans. I wish the Nuggets would have won but oh well.

Hope everyone is doing well, have a great week.

Hi everyone.

I keep wondering when this weather is going to get warm. It's cool again today. We haven't even gotten our boat in the water yet.

Marty - Yeah, watched some of the game. I don't think the penguins have a chance (sorry to all you pen fans). The Detroit Free Press has a cute "smack the penguin" game on its site. Check it out if you want to feel part of the series by beating up on some poor penguins.

Ed- Gordie is pretty adamant about seeing the Pisa Tower. Since that is really the only thing, besides the colloseum, that he says he wants to see, it guess I'll go along with him. So I guess we're out on the Tuscany trip. :(

On to Messina, I was reading that there are some castles on Sicily. I'll have to find out more about where they are because castles are on my bucket list. If anyone runs into anything about this, give me a shout.

Have a great day!

diane52
June 1st, 2009, 01:27 PM
Vicki- Pisa is really not an all day thing. We stopped off the train on our way back from Florence last year. It is about a 20-25 min walk each way and then you can see the tower the church and the baptistry. If you don't want to go all the way to Florence maybe you could combine it with one of the walled towns like Lucca? Diane

Also- on John Heald's blog, he has the first set of new pictures from the shipyard. Our ship is definitely coming along nicely :)...

Benvenuti alla Songo, Songo, Songo mortimer49! I agree with Denise, I love that area as well. My parents lived in Melbourne for a long while and also moved to Michigan....right up the coast from Denise (small world). Are you & your husband Jags fans?

Judy/etexasbeachbum - I think I will go with ACS. They have a minibus that holds 8, and can take 6 large bags + 6 small bags. Having a little extra room won't hurt for the 1 1/2 drive to Rome. They are e-mailing me the quote, but it looks like it will be E 190 which is $ 272. Divided by 6= $45 pp. Here is the web page to the ACS page with our vehicle;

http://goitaly.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=goitaly&cdn=travel&tm=86&gps=225_909_1419_695&f=10&su=p531.50.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.airportconnection.it/einterno.htm

Hi Janis it means we flush the system to get rid of the RV antifreeze that we put in around October so the lines don't freeze and crack. Remember we get below zero for weeks at a time and can't just leave the camper without protection.

Okay Denise people call me everyday and ask what I think the market is going to do....my crystal ball is broke otherwise I would be a millionaire:D I agree I hope the Euro goes down again or everything is going to be over the budget I prepared. Also let's keep those oil prices down!!!

O.K., after 2 periods, 2-2 tie. I'll take it; I hope the Wings can steal game 3, which could practically spell the end of the Tuxedo Birds ...

Judy - thanks on the shuttle. I'll go ahead and book it. If, for some reason, etexbeachbum cancels, we can downsize the vehicle to a 6 passenger van (E 165). They may be on vacation, I haven't seen them post in awhile, but I had gotten enough positive response from them that I feel comfortable booking this.

Anna - If you notice the "JK" behind my question, it means Just Kidding. Just a little Southern California humor. We used to have to winterize and dewinterize our family chalet on Bridgeport Lake (in the High Sierras) every year when I was growing up. One year we went there for Christmas and couldn't get the water pipes unfrozen and had to go out on the lake and cut a hole in it to fetch water in buckets to boil. That was enough winter for me.

Denise - We are trying not to watch the US dollar going down in value or the prices of gas going up. We are going with the "Ignorance is Bliss" attitude.

Anyone - Is the hockey game over? Did the Penguins do it?

Well Marty, you did jinx it. That's okay though, apparently the birds need 6 men on the ice to do it though. (LOL) A friend of ours has tickets for game 5 at the Joe, so I'm sure he is happy.

Janis/Dick - That's one of my favorite sayings "ignorance is bliss". I guess that's the reason for my stupid grin I wear around all day long.

Welcome aboard mortimer49 & DH! You'll be DREAMING all summer like the rest of us. Take some time and read some of the past posts to catch up on everyone and their plans so far.

Maryann- We are staying at Istituto Immacolata Concezione. The curfew never bothered us last year either. By the time we had walked 11 miles in Rome one day we were really glad for the curfew!!

Diane, Did you book directly with the convent or through an agency? I do have a booking at Hotel Julia but am leaning towards a convent again. All the ones I have emailed directly are full. I know a couple if years ago in October there were a lot of church groups in Rome for canonisations so perhaps it is the same this year. Some of the convents offer optional evening meals but as I said they all seem to be booked.

Maryann-
We booked directly with the convent. As I said before, we stayed there last year. The rooms are basic with two single beds. It was very clean and the nuns were very cute although there was a language barrier. We managed just fine with the basics. You can't beat the location close to the Spanish steps. It is a short walk to the Barberini metro. I found the convent on the web site recommended by Rick Steves www.santasusanna.org It is the first convent listed under the Historic center ones. LE SUORE DI LOURDES. It has a 10:30 curfew and is I think 70 Euros for a single. We are paying 75 euros for a double with private bath and includes a breakfast of coffee and a large roll.
I will tell you though that I think they still have rooms because it is not easy to book. You have to book by fax or telephone, they have no email. We signed up with an online fax service called My Fax where they deliver you fax as an email. It worked very well and the first month was free. Then they want you to send a 50 Euro deposit but you can't use a credit card. We ended up paying $10 to an online company to send us an international check. Last Year my Mom made all the arrangements and sent a 50 Euro bill. It is worth it in the end though, I think, and if you already have another reservation you could take your time booking. Let me know what you decide. It would be fun to have someone staying with us. Diane

Ciao Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Denise - thanks for the link. I just got finished reading it myself. Yes, the Dream is really taking shape. You can already see the latest in lighting technology being used. Also, on this blog, they announce what the large production shows will be and describe them; e.g. "Dancin' in the Streets", "Xtreme Country"...

Judy - congrats on the game 3 win Tues night! I laughed at Vicki's comment about the 6 Penguins on the ice. Don't know if you were watching then, but it actually happened-> Pittsburgh had an extra skater on for about 20 secs and no one (except the TV commentators) noticed! Didn't affect the game, as the Red Wings are good enough to play 5 on 6 against anybody :D.

Well, I predict the Wings will win tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, so they can come back home and raise the Cup at the Joe. Get it?, "Cup O' Joe" :p...

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Joe and I have been in Rome before, but there is so much to see! We've never been to Florence. Everyone says the train is only 1 hrs from Termini to Florence. I've read that many people do this commute every day, and it's very simple. But, I still worry that I will get lost or something. Mary Ann - Heineken in the McDonald's in Greece? Wow, and I thought the Italians knew how to live ;).

Well, another start to the weekend :). Jeanne just got back from her business trip to St. Louis, so we can now go "full steam ahead" on the plans for post-cruise and any excursions during cruise. There's a certain evening gondola ride in Venice I need to reserve, but not with Carnival (as they said 4 at a time go; need just the 2 of us, and maybe a musician ;)). Plan on trying to do a kiss at sunset at the Bridge of Sighs, as per John Heald's advice. Am I a romantic guy, or what?

Btw, on John Heald's blog today, he said he'll have a full blog on Sunday, with special attention to the Dream. I'm thinking he'll have more pics & even videos of the ship . Hi Judy - I tried to book (reserve) the shuttle on ACS's website, but I think their booking "thingy" online is malfunctioning. I had all the correct info entered. Anyway, I sent them an e-mail, so should hear something back from them soon. I asked if I could book by e-mail. If necessary, I'll do it over the phone.

Again, it will be an 8 person mini-bus, so we'll have a little extra room. Still counting on etexbeachbum, even though I haven't heard from them. Price quote was E 190 which currently equates to $272. Divided by 6 = $ 45 per. If the dollar keeps gaining ground against the Euro, it may be cheaper...

Oh, and yes, tonight's game is HUGE! I'm glad the next 2 out of 3 are in Detroit. I still want my "Cup O' Joe"!!

Marty

P.S. If for some reason, etexbeachbum drops out, I will get the smaller 6 passenger mini-van (for just the 4 of us), and the price drops to E 165, which converts to $236 ($40 pp).

I bought 4 sandals last week and DH a pair of Tan Linen walking shorts and a long sleeve Chaps shirt that is white with small blue stripes that can be dressed up or casual with the sleeves rolled up. Keep the ice on and try to resist jumping up & down on it after the Wings win the Stanley Cup Tues night :D!!

Janis - thanks much on the congrats! I was really proud of the Red Wings for bouncing back the way they did, because I was very worried after game 4 in Pittsburgh. Detroit looked tired & old & a step behind the Penguins. Getting Chris Draper & especially Pavel Datsyuk back has been huge for Detroit!! Congrats on your DD & DSIL's home purchase in Burbank!!

Denise,
It will probably take about 30 minutes to get from EWR to the port or into Manhattan depending on which way you go. If the tunnels are backed up it could be more. There is a train from EWR to Penn Station in NYC(they have this "train to the plane" thing) and then you can get a cab for the 25 blocks or so. A car service is probaly not too much either and a lot nicer. There may even be a shuttle service.
When are you going? If a have some time I'll check. You can check trains on NJTransit website.
Let me know< I'll certainly help. NYC is not as daunting as some make it appear. Streets are number(except in Downtown area), the higher the number-the further north. Avenues are mostly numbered with the numbers going higher from East to West. The port in Manhattan is at 55th and the West Side Highway not far from the Lincoln tunnel. Penn staten is 33-35th Street between 7th and 8th Ave.

Just checked John Heald's blog, and he has posted his Sunday blog. However, he just covers the 2 new Costa ships. His coverage of the Dream starts tomorrow !!

Marty

Strange, can't see this.

Terry, I am staying at Il Rosario which is near the Collisseum Address Via di Sant' Agata dei Goti 10. Nearest metro station Cavour.

Denise, sorry to hear about your ankle, I know too well how painful that can be. I will be staying in New York for 3 days following the transatlantic and am torn between staying at EWR and catching the bus in and staying in New York. I got the Renaissance for $45 on priceline for the final night as my flight leaves at 7am but still undecided on the other 2 nights as hotels in New York are so expensive.

I really would like to do Cinque Terre while we are in Livorno. I have done a lot of research on how to get there on the train. The problem is that we would have to catch the 8:26 train because the next one after that is 10:42. As you recall I did write to John's blog about bus times to get out of the port in Livorno and John said they would not start until 8:00 again this year. He suggested that we try to bribe a cab to the station with 20 euros. Is anyone else interested in Cinque Terre and would like to try to get a cab with us? I figure if 4 of us went in a cab we might have a better chance of getting a cab with a little more money. Our backup plan if we can't get a cab or if the weather isn't good is to do one of the walled towns in the area Probably Lucca.

Thanks Janis! I hope I didn't miss something. What did you do to your knee? I hope that gets better soon!

At least it sounds like it doesn't interfere with your shopping ability!;) Now that would just put me over the edge!

I love Kohls! You're right the Nautica line is great for cruise wear. Kohl's has very good sales too!

Marty, Joe loved the super-sized comment.:o

Jody and Chris. Are you back from your Honeymoon? How was the wedding and remember you promised pictures.:)

Terry, When do you leave on your Canada cruise? I have a question for you.
Do you know far it is and how involved it is to get from the Newark Airport to New York City? They just added a new airline, with a direct flight from South Bend to Newark. Coud you do it by train? Or would you get a limo service?

Don't go to any trouble looking things up. I can do that. I just wanted your opinion. Thanks, Denise

Denise - You need to be more careful on those stairs ;)

We got back from the honeymoon on Tuesday last week. Duluth was cold and rainy. Good thing we were only there 2 days. It was nice to get away for a little while after the wedding though.

The wedding was interesting to say the least. The weather was beautiful all day until right before the ceremony. The wind kicked up and it started to drizzle. We rushed through the ceremony and ran for the cars! During the ceremony at the gardens my 2 1/2 year old twin neice and nephew ran behind the judge performing the ceremony and started pulling up the tulips. It was hilarious and didn't bother me a bit. At least they were enjoying themselves. The food at the reception was great and we had lots of extra cake to eat the day after the wedding. It definitely wasn't a "perfect" wedding, but it got the job done and everyone enjoyed themselves.

I think I was able to attache a few pictures. I'm waiting for more pics from my sister and new sister in law.

Time to start planning the cruise! I told Chris he is responsible for Venice and Barcelona.

Welcome to the new cruisers. We're going to have a great time on the Dream!

Terry, Mary and Janis,

Thanks for the info on New York! We have no plans yet, but that new airline has some tickets for 9 dollars each way, so I'm trying to talk Joe into a Canada, New England cruise. I think I've used most of his vacation time this year, but maybe next.

Terry, You sound like a travel expert in New York!

Janis and Mary, I think you two are staying very close to each other in Rome.

All, I went to the Dr. today, I just have a badly sprained ankle. I agree with you Terry, it would not seem right to have it be broken in church.

Ed, you better not be running. After the wedding, you have a honeymoon to go on, and we are all going with you!

Ciao Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Jody & Chris- CONGRATS:)! If you upload your wedding photos to Photobucket (or similar), you can post them on here large ;). Photos look great!

Judy - not sure what happened, but John Heald's link is under "Carnival Links", lower right corner of the Carnival main page.

Speaking of - his blog today starts coverage of our ship! He has a You Tube video of Todd Whittmer, our CD. He has a few pics and descriptions of some parts of the ship. His coverage of the Dream continues all week . BTW, his 2nd You Tube video is hilarious, re the toilets in Italy...

Hockey fans - Game #6 tomorrow night in Pittsburgh. Hope the "Winged White Walls" can roll over the Tuxedo Birds and make them road kill!

Terry - I got a grin out of Denise's comment also. Will we all be able to fit in Ed's stateroom ... Since it is Ed's honeymoon, I think we've found our model for the Songo Thongo

Hope everyone has had a good start to their week!

Marty, I think it will go to game 7 also. Makes for a better series when it isn't all one sided. Although, I do hope the Pens play much better than they did in this last game.

If you are having trouble getting the shuttle booked try this link: www.civitavecchia.biz
He was very quick to respond to me about the shuttle from FCO and his prices are reasonable.
Judy - by the way, the shuttle (ACS) is booked! Once they sent me the PayPal site, it worked like a charm! To reserve, it cost 60 Euros ($83.50), the remainder- 130 Euros ($180) to be paid to the driver.

Also, as I said, if Etexbeachbum drops out, we can downgrade to the smaller vehicle...

Happy Tuesday!

Marty, yes, I am back in the U.P. for tonight's game. I was here for Saturday nights rollover too. Although I think the Wings should take the Cup where ever they can get it, it would be nice if it's at the Joe. But, my prediction is they will be flying home with it tonight!

CONGRATULATIONS MR. & MRS. ZETAH! I'm happy to hear your day went well. And you both made a great looking bride and groom. BTW, those little things add personality to a wedding. Your Minnesota weather sounds like our Michigan weather.

Denise, ouch on the ankle. I hope it heals quickly. I think you need to stay off it and have everyone wait on you.

If we're all staying in Ed's cabin, should I bring my own pillow?

Here's an idea, so there's no fighting over the Sogno Thongo, maybe all the guys should take turns on different days.

Lastly, welcome MARCOPOLOSMITH!

I thought I had posted about my knee. I strained a ligament in my left knee while doing aerobics several weeks ago. An xray didn't show any damage, but the doctor wanted me to wait a while to see if it heels before doing an MRI. It only hurts now when I walk too much or turn too quickly. It needs to get better soon so I can get back on my exercise regimine. It has slowed my shopping down a little:(

First of all - congrats to the Tuxedo Birds, but I can't say they "pecked our eyes out" this time. VERY tight game, and I (& probably Vicki) look at it that that's how close the Pens were away from elimination :D. Anybody tell Scuderi that he's not a goalie? He probably had more saves than Fleury . I did admit, Scuderi played an awesome game and had A LOT to do with the Pens holding on. Well, just makes this year's Stanley Cup all the more GRANDER!!

Janis - no chance of boredom, even if the Wings win in Detroit. Do you listen to the Jim Rome show ("The Jungle") out of LA? He calls himself a "**** for the puck", as he really talks it up for NHL hockey. He said today that there is NO sporting event better than a Game 7 Stanley Cup final. I agree with him 100%. I'll be literally on the edge of my seat Friday night, and since I don't have to work the next day, chances are, I will have a super-sized McDonald's beer (or 2) while watching the game :D!!

Judy - sorry, the Cup stays at the Joe. Gotta have my "Cup O' Joe" ;)!!

Mary- thanks, I thought it was you. Although there is still a lot of work to be done, yes, it is good to know that the Dream will be delivered on time.

All - hope everyone has been reading John Heald's blog this week, as the Dream coverage continues. He had an interview with Samantha Brown of the Travel Channel. I think her sailing on the Carnival Freedom airs this Saturday eve...

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Vicki - Sorry about your Wings:( I know it's not fun to loose.

Judy - I was very proud of those Tuxedos.

Marty - Fleury played well although I was constantly yelling at the tv for him to get his butt back in the net. I have never listened to Jim Rome. Sorry. Good luck finding a Mickey D's around you that sells you a beer!

Ciao Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

etexbeachbum - great! Glad you posted. We're all set; we have an 8-passenger mini-bus booked, which will pick us up at 9:30 am on Oct 27th at the port and take us straight to Hotel Cosmopolita. The $$ to reserve the shuttle works out almost perfectly. Basically, Jeanne & my portion covered the cost to reserve it, and the remaining balance of $180 = the cost pp $45 X 4. And the remaining portion is paid to the driver. So, basically, it works out that Jeanne & I just paid our portion up front. So, bottom line, nothing needed until it comes time to pay the driver.

Diane - I agree, another meteoric rise at the pump . I hope Carnival holds that position until after this cruise. Who knows, after summer, maybe fuel prices might come back down?? What a roller coaster...I want to buy a rechargeable electric car!

Janis - yes, the U.S. is behind Europe in the "beer at McDonald's category". Minor inconvenience though, as I believe a Stanley Cup Game 7 deserves a fine "adult beverage of choice" ;). Btw, trip planning coming along good. Done with accommodations & all transfers. Now, time for port activities ;)...

Denise/Joe - if you liked Game 6, be sure and watch Game 7. It is Friday (tomorrow) night at 8:00 pm EDT on NBC. Why do I have this feeling it is going to go into overtime .?

All - on John Heald's blog, good interview with Roger Blum, VP of Entertainment with Carnival. Blum had some good comments about the entertainment on the Dream. Funny comment about John Heald dancing on stage in a G-string; was said due to his size, it would have to be a G-"rope" :D. Humor sound familiar? Sounds like our Songo Thongo...

Well, another weekend is here tomorrow. When we booked this cruise so far in advance, I thought time would just drag...but, actually, time is flying and we'll be catching our flight to Rome before we know it !!

Hi all,
Leaving for New Hampshire today to go to nieces graduation. Monday will be my last day in a classroom:(:D. Although I still have a month to go in September this really feels like it since I wont really make that emotional bond of having "my" kids. I did tear up yesterday.
We leave a week from tomorrow for our Triumph cruise. We switched from an inside to a BL since the price dropped and they wouldn't give OBC. They haven't assigned the rooms yet to us but the PVP said they have assigned them at Carnival-just keeping it a secret. I was afraid we would be left at the pier but PVP said no wat-just pack.
Everyone have a nice weekend.

Awesome Stanley Cup :)!! My hats off to the Penguins...they played an awesome Game # 7, especially Fleury and that guy that scored 2 goals.

Hard to watch those Tuxedo Birds raise the Cup on the Wings home ice, but I give them full credit battling back from an 0-2 hole to start the series (didn't they do that against the Washington Capitals also?). Hockey gods are smiling down on Steeltown.

I knew it wasn't meant to be for the Wings when that shot hit the cross-bar late in the game :(

It's a Steeltown world, and we're just living in it...first the Steelers win the Super Bowl, then the Penguins win the Stanley Cup, what next?, the Pirates win the World Series :p??

Anyway, CONGRATS again to the Pittsburgh Penguins, they are a deserving Stanley Cup Champion!! Enjoy Judy & DH!

We are a party of 4 looking to book a 5 hour tour of Rome including a drop-off at Civtavecchia on October 14th. We will be arriving in Rome at 8:45AM on a flight from Philadelphia. If this fits your schedule email me at edwardt.smth@yahoo.com.

Ed

Ed you must be on U.S.Air if so my BIL and SIL are on that flight. We already have a transfer with hotel from the airport to the hotel in Civitavecchia the Hotel Traino. We are not planning on going into Rome, I had bad dealing in Rome twice I was pick pocked once and almost pickpocked one time. I don't want anything to do with Rome. We just want to relax on the 14th and stay around Civitavecchia. Looking forward to meeting you if possible.

Welcome Sassse and Tommy!

Marty, We've never been to the Harry's in Venice, but we have been to the Harry's in Rome. Very upscale! Go in and have a drink, but food is expensive!! We stayed at the Savoy the last trip, and Harry's was right around the corner. I think it was on the Via Veneto.

Speaking of motorcycles, in Rome some of the streets are cobblestone and narrow. We saw the police going about 50mph down one of those narrow streets standing on his motorcycle. To me, that's a little scary!! But, I would hate to drive a car in Rome too!!

Great weekend here in Michigan, I think it hit 80 degrees today.

Thanks Denise. I agree, way too expensive for meals. I guess the thing to do is go in for a Bellini. I was thinking of stopping in there after Piazza San Marco.

Right now, the tentative plan is gondola ride, get off gondola and walk to this cool restaurant around the corner. After dinner, walk over to Piazza San Marco. Harry's is near the Piazza San Marco on the Grand Canal. The rest of the time in Venice we'll leave wide-open, as I understand this is the place to just "get lost" on foot. Plus, the vaporettos (water taxis) seem like an easy way to get around quickly when needed.

Btw - it is 80 here in Houston also -> 80 percent HUMIDITY!! plus, 96 degree temps!! Summer is definitely here for the deep South. Time to put the swim trunks (errr Songo Thongo) on!!

All -hope everyone had a great weekend.

Marty & Jeanne

P.S. everyone catch Samantha Brown on the Carnival Freedom? There's a CC thread about it also. I thought it was very good. I DVR'd it...

Good morning!

Marty, I was bummed about the Wings too. Yes, I was in Yooperville, but I was camping. We watched on our little tv in the middle of the woods, do you think that's what did it? :( Oh well, I guess I have fall to look forward to so I can watch my football team.

Congrats to the Penguins and all their fans.

Weather is finally starting to feel like summer here in the U.P.

Welcome Sassse and fiance. Your timing is great, you won't have to put up with anymore hockey talk.

Have a great day everyone!

Was down in Jersey visiting the grandchildren this weekend. My daughter is on leave from her teaching job with her two small children and is making a little side money as a Disney certified planner. I asked her if there is any talk about the fuel surcharges and she said that the cruise lines are trying to keep them off the bookings at least until the economy improves. Hope she is right, and fuel stabilizes!

Diane - I agree! I just filled my truck up this morning .

Carnival especially, sounds like they are trying not to add the fuel surcharges again. Smart in that, with this economy, and the cruise lines trying to keep their ships full, an added surcharge would not help their cause...

Vicki - I think that may have been it; hindsight is 20-20. Not only did you have to remain in Yooperville, you had to remain in your house in Yooperville. Since you were close, camping, that's why the Red Wing shot that would've tied up Game 7 hit the cross-bar instead of going in :p;)...

Are you sure you (we) have a football team ;)? Since I live in Houston now, I root first for the Texans (have had season tickets since inception).

For the blue & silver up there, all I can say is "Restore the Roar"!!

All- Venice is set :). Gondola vouchers here and restaurant reserved ;).

For Naples-> does anybody have space for 2 on an Amalfi/Pompeii excursion??

Arrivederci,

Marty & Jeanne

Marty, we would like to do an Amalfi/Pompeii excursion as well. Right now we were going to hook up with Diane and catch the train to Pompeii, but we'd really like to have a drive up the coast. Maybe we can see if there's enough interest to look into another tour. Anyone?

On another note, our the airline changed our return flight. Instead of leaving Rome at 2 and getting to Amsterdam at 4:30, we now leave at 5 p.m. and get to Amsterdam at 7:45 p.m. We were supposed to leave Amsterdam at 1 p.m. the next day, now we leave at 10:30 a.m. I really wanted to check out that city while we were there overnight.

Vicki, Maybe they'll change your flights again so they give you more time in Amsterdam. It is too bad when they do this. I've had mine changed too, in the past. I think you may be able to call the airlines and see if there's another flight to change to without a fee. It's worth a try anyway. I keep checking on the flight we're on for this trip and it hasn't changed so far. But, I think it's good to keep checking just in case they don't notify you or the email gets lost somewhere...

Terry, have a great cruise. Let us know how you like the Triumph!

All, Has anyone ever been on a carribean cruise during Spring Break?
We're thinking of taking our oldest son, his wife and grandson on a Costa cruise April 2010. I thought about avoiding Carnival, (I think thunder must be coming down from the heavens) because of too many kids during spring break. Our grandson is 2, so he doesn't care. Let me know if anyone has any experience with this. Denise

Hi Everyone... Kinda feel like I am interrupting here but my Fiance and I will be on the Dream on 10/15/09 and we are flying in to Rome on the 13th. We have never been on a European cruise so am so looking forward to it. If anyone is going early and would like to share in a sightseeing tour I have spoken to a guide in Italy who came highly recommended by a friend. We would be doing the tour on Wed. Oct. 14th. Let me know if you are interested.

Welcome aboard - We are arriving in Rome on Oct 10. What kind of sightseeing tour are you looking at? Do you know how your getting to the port on Oct 15??

Sassse and All, We arrive in Rome on the 13th also. We're going from Chicago to London Heathrow then British Air to Rome, arriving at 12:40pm. We'd ideally like to find someone on our flight to share a shuttle into Rome. If anyone happens to be on that flight and wants to share a shuttle, let me know!
Thanks, Denise:)

Thank You.... The tour guide that I talked with told me that he would meet me as our hotel which is the Hotel Columbus and it would be a walking tour which would last 5-6 hours. He said we would be able to see everything in that time. I have not talked extensively with him but it said it would cost 50euro per hour. And he said that was
for up to 6 people....

Hi Sasse,I'll add you to the list.
Well I was a little weepy today since it's my last day in a classroom with my own class. I'll have to do the month of Sept but they wont put me in a room. We went to my nieces graduation this past weekend at Dartmouth. We found out she was Salutatorian, second in her class at an Ivy. Wow!!It was a great weekend.
Now I'm going to pack for our Triumph cruise. I had changed to BL from insides about 2 weeks ago and they just assigned the rooms today-6 days away. Not bad, 8Ds, but my sons are near the laundry room. Hey they can't and wont complain, they're thrilled for a balcony.

We were able to watch the final in my nieces apt. Sorry Wings fans and congrats to Penguins fans. Hey, my Devils were home.
Off to an end of the year party.
Diane, We went on the Valor at Easter 2 years ago. It was crowded but we hardly saw the kids since they were almost always at Camp Canival. We also did late dinner seating. It really wasn't bad at all. No college spring breakers.

Ciao!

Vicki - cool! I definitely want to tour the Amalfi coast. I'll check into some tours on the internet and share what I find. I promise not to procrastinate ...

We also had our return trip changed by Continental. However, I like it better; we now are on Continental all the way back, from Rome to Newark then change to another Continental flight from Newark to Houston (Bush). Our original return flight had us going from Rome via Paris (De Gaulle) on Air France . I think the change was good in this case...

Denise - I think if you go on a longer cruise (7 day) and on a larger Carnival ship (e.g. Conquest class), you probably won't run into the college spring break crowd. I think they stick to the shorter cruises, 4 or 5 dayers. If you sail Costa, at least you're staying in the Carnival Corp family ;).

Terry - thanks for the condolences on the winged flat tires (just kidding-> still 08/09 Western Conference Champs :)). Have the Tuxedo Birds waddled down downtown Pittsburgh for their victory parade yet :p?

Enjoy your Canadian cruise on Triumph! Please let me know how it was. I am still "eyeing" the Glory's "Back to the Glaciers" cruise in summer 2010. Ship will do 3 cruises out of NY and will go down the St. Lawrence Seaway as far as Quebec City. Jeanne's mom & family live in Quebec, so this could work out great for a certain "ceremony" (in Quebec City), if you get my drift ;).

Take care Sogno, Sogno, Sogno and hope everyone is having a great start to their week!

Arrivederci,

Marty & Jeanne

Last time I was in Harry's Venice, a Bellini cost 15 euros. Probably a little more now.

Good Tuesday Morning! (I really need to learn an Italian greeting)

Terry, it must be bittersweet your retirement. Saying good bye to the kiddies would be tough. Enjoy your first retired summer. I wish I was home to watch your DIL. You should be proud...brag away. BTW, her being a chef must get you some awesome dinners. Have a great time on your cruise.

Denise, we've been to the Caribbean numerous times during March. Only once over Easter that I recall. There was a boat load of kids on that cruise. I don't really remember the kids being underfoot that much. But then again, we usually hung out in places where the kids weren't. As far as spring breakers go, this wasn't normally an issue either other than our first cruise. That was before Carnival's under 25 policy. There's normally a spattering of spring breakers but the ship is not over run with them.

I'm not sure what a Bellini is, but if it's that orange looking drink in the picture, I can't wait to try it! :p It looks scrumptous.

we wouldn't mind a rome tour on the 14th. I'm still looking at flights but it seems most of the ones i'm looking at arrive between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. If anyone initiates a tour from the airport with a drop off at the port, we would be interested. you can IM me on yahoo (etexbeachbum) or drop a message here.

Denise,
As you can tell from my cruise experience on bottom, I usually go in to the Carribean in April. I've never had alot of Spring Breakers on any Cruise or even heard of any of my friends go on a cruise for the break in our colllege days. Trust me, back on the 1st one I was hoping for some...LOL... As someone whoose seeked out Springbreak fun in the past Cruises were never the 1st choice, drinking cost too much for most college kids compared to bringing your own drinks to some cheap place, or going to an all-inclusive resorts.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Vicki - how about Ciao? I believe you can use this as an informal way of "hi" or "bye" (used like "aloha"). Arrivederci is more formal-> "good-bye".

Yes, that's a Bellini. On the link below, click on "The Bellini" under "Discover Harry's Bar" and it'll tell you all about it!
