dlbutler, thanks very much for your advice.

Would your opinion change at all if I were to say that we are getting a transfer with Rome Cabs (http://www.romecabs.com), a very highly recommended transfer service? Obviously they can't magically control traffic jams, but according to all sources, they will be on time and I believe they can take us right up close to the embarkation area. They will also help with our luggage and what not.

I think the long walk to the ship is from the train station only, right?

We are a group of 4 and looking to join or have others to join us on private shore excursions in Naples & Livorno. I have made contact with several companies and their rates are much less than the excursions by Carnival. Example, 8 hour tour in Naples visiting Amalfi coast, Sorrento, Pompei etc is 380 euros for 8 people in a van. Tours would be cheaper individually for group of 8 rather than for 4 people .

What tour company is it? Price sounds good to me, can I check out their website? FYI, my e-mail is fenton4015@yahoo.com. Thanks!!

Judy, Thanks again for the ideas.

Bones, How's your summer going? Is your group getting excited about the trip?

I hope the weather will be warm. I think we will be in Italy in a bit of a rainy season.

Dave, did you have alot of rain on your last med cruise? Thanks for the pictures of toilets. I agree with Barb. The other thing that amazes me is sometimes they are coed. I was washing my hands, minding my own business and this guy stands next to me, and aims for the hole in the ground.

Ciao Ya’all!!

Hi Everyone! 95 days to the cruise!!!!!! Can’t wait! I posted an update a couple of days ago but didn’t see it when I was going through the posts, so I thought I would post again. I recently went to Olive Garden and was trying to speak Italian to the waiters. I think they thought I was drunk!!!

Everyone: Thank you so much for the information regarding my mom’s degeneration and her recent hospital stay. I read your comments and it meant a lot to her. She is even more excited about the trip now! My mom is out of the hospital; it was a blood staph infection and she is slowly healing.

Diane: Thanks for the invite on the train. We would love to meet up with you. If my mom is feeling strong enough we will take the train. If not we may need to take a private car. When it gets closer to the time we will know.

DC Born: My husband and I are seriously thinking of moving to Virginia. It is a little hot here for us, and I miss the seasons desperately. I would love to hear all about Virginia. We are thinking about the Roanoke area.

Ciao for now!!!

Torrential rain in Rome one evening. It was wet! We went to the Pantheon and rain was falling through the oculus which was a sight to see.Don't remember any other rain but could be chilly in the evening.

The toilets are pretty much the regular ones most places. If you go to one in a train station be warned, except for Rome they seem to be footprints ones.Always keep toilet tissue with you. Don't forget McDonalds always has clean toilets anywhere in the world.

Dave, last year we walked from the station to the port entrance and even with luggage it was only a 10-15 minute walk to the port entrance to pick up the shuttle bus.

We used Rome Cabs last year. I love Stefano!. We did what he characterized as a half day tour. We got picked up around 10am in Rome. Then we went to see the Etruscan Burial grounds. Stefano is not a guide but he studies this and was a great source of knowledge. Then we went to Tarquinia for lunch at this little restaurant. Then to a B&B to do a wine and olive oil tasting --where we got pretty blitzed. LOL Stefano kept telling us we had to go but we kept lingering and drinking. We made it to the ship --but just barely --at 5pm. We were the last people to board. They dropped us off right at the ship.

We are using them this year when we arrive for the transfer from the airport to the apartment. I figured we would be tired and also we've never stayed in Trastevere so they will take us right to the door.

I agree with the OP--I wouldn't try and cut it close. Ask Stefano how late he thinks you should leave....

Shala,
We live in Michigan, but Joe goes to Staunton,VA often. It is about 80 miles from Roanoke. I go with him sometimes and have often told him if we ever move from Michigan, this is where I'd like to live. The Shenandoah Valley area is gorgeous. The people there, that I have met, seem so friendly. Glad your Mom is doing better.

Jill, we thought about staying in Trastevere pre-cruise too. It's really convenient when taking the train to the port.

Mary, Glad you didn't have rain everyday!!

Hi Denise,
We found this efficiency apartment that is just gorgeous--and it was very reasonable for 6 nights. About $100 per night. I'm looking forward to wandering around Trastevere--we didn't get a chance to visit there last year.

I haven't looked into the train to the port yet. We do plan on using it to get there.

The walk from the train station to the port entrance is about 10-15 minutes, but.. if the shuttle buses aren't running it is a long walk in to the ship. We walked out from the ship two years ago because we had a tour in Rome that we needed to catch an early train for. It was a long winding walk thru the shipyard. As far as Rome Cabs, all I can say is take the chance if you like, I would show up earlier.

Well we are down to 90 days as of today and it feels good. I am looking forward to those 28 days onboard. I have spent that much time on a ship since I was in the Navy.

jilly08, I took your advice and emailed Stefano to get his opinion. Here is my question, followed by his reply:

Will we be fine to get to the port before 6 PM if we leave at 3:30 PM? That would give us 2 1/2 hours to get there, and the ship doesn't even leave until 7 PM (Carnival just says "at the latest arrive by 6 PM to board"). What do you think? Could it really take more than 2 1/2 hours to get from the Hotel San Carlo to Civitavecchia on a Thursday afternoon? If so, perhaps I will change the reservation... I just want to make the most of your wonderful city before I leave on the ship.

Thank you,

His reply:

Hello Ben.
The time is ok
it takes about 1 h and 15 min to reach port

For those of you who have been to the Med in Oct, what kind of weather can we expect? Cool, warm, sunny, rainy? I know no one can be exact, but in general what is the weather like at that time of the year?

I was curious about the weather too. It's going to be odd, being on a cruise ship and not having steel drum music, 90 degree weather, and fruity drinks in hand.

Sanjuro, (Ben and Wendy) welcome to the board and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. We live in Longview, about 2 hours from you and my son and lives in Frisco.

Mabelp, we wouldn't mind going in with another group for a tour. If you come up with anything let me know. The two of us might go in with yall. IM or email me at etexbeachbum@yahoo.com Our plans are wide open.

Hi Patti,
We have a party of four and are definitely interested in joining the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Positano, & Pompei tour as listed on the Private Tour in Italy website. Take a look at post 1744 (from Mabelp) who lists a price of 380 E. I replied to her, but waiting for more information to see if that price includes these sites.

We are also interested in the "Marvels of Pisa & Florence" Tour.

Morning all!

I've been off the boards for a few days and see you all have been chatty.

Welcome to the new Dreamers! I see there are some more Texans. I think we'll have to call the ship "Little Texas".

We made our final payment last week too. Now, we just have to sit and patiently wait. I know I should start thinking about a packing list, but being the procrastinator I am...I'll do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the site with Cafe Buza. I can't wait for our happy hour there.

You mean we won't have steel drums on this cruise?!! LOL, I wonder if our what kind of drinks of the day we'll have. We've only cruised to the Caribbean so it will be interesting to see the differences. I know I mentioned that we'll also be on the Dream in Feb. 2010 for some friends' wedding. I've been telling them that we're doing a scouting trip.

Have a great Monday!

Hello everyone on the Oct 15 Dream cruise. We hope to book this cruise this week (I know nothing like the last minute). We cruised this same itinerary in May 2007 when the Freedom was brand new and had hoped to go back in the Spring of 2010. We found out recently that Carnival has no plans to do a 2010 Europe cruise, so we are trying to work out the details and make the October trip. We booked the 2007 trip months in advance and found a great group of people on a meet on board for that cruise, here at cruise critics. There were over 100 of us and one of the guys pulled us all together so we could book excursions and transportation together before, during and after the cruise. I need to read all of your posts, but am wondering if you guys have done any of this yet? We would love to be part of your group (if we book) and would love to be brought up to date. BTW - is anyone in this group part of the Freedom Grand Med group from May 1, 2007?

Gee... I wonder why? I can't wait, and all my planning is driving Wendy crazy. She'll appreciate it when we get to Rome, I think.

Does anyone have any tour ideas for the port of Livorno yet?

Luvcdays

I am joining this thread very late and have not yet read all the posts, but when we were there in 2007, we used a company called Pappillion Tours and they were great. The, a very pleasant Italian girl, picked us up at the pier first thing in the morning in a 7 passenger A/C van. There were 3 couples in our group. She took us to Florence and prearranged tickets to see the David. We bypassed the line, which was around the block. She also took us to a cathedral, the Gold Bridge and to see the Pisa and lunch in Florence. She returned us to the ship an hour or so before our sail time and gifted each couple with a bottle of wine. If memory serves, we paid about 100 euros each.

I'm looking into the possibility of taking a transfer tour from Florence the morning of the 15th. It would stop at Sienna and perhaps another place before dropping us off at the ship. Having read that some people are thinking of taking a day trip to Florence on the 14th, why not stay overnight and travel with us back to the ship? We will be in Florence from the 11th-15th and thought this would be a great way to get to the ship. It's a 3 hour drive (without stops) or train trip (two trains) by my calculations. Hotel to ship delivery with a little sightseeing along the way? Works for me. If anyone is interested in doing this with us, let me know. I am awaiting itinerary and price information from the the tour company I found Avventure Bellissime (http://www.tours-italy.com/)

I'm also finding out about shore excursion discounts from them. A friend used them on a trip and really liked the company. Again we are asking for quotes for 2-8 people. Here are some of my thoughts of what I might want to do.

a. Since my husband and I have already been to Pompeii, Naples, and Sorrento, we are interested in something else on the Naples shore excursion and are open to suggestions.

b. We don't plan to take a tour on the 18th. I've been to Venice before, I want to savor the short amount of time we have there. We will do a half day tour to do Murano and maybe one other island in Venice on the 19th. My husband loves glass and hasn't been to Venice so this one's for him.

c. Livorno: Pisa (fast and dirty to see the Plaza of Miracles area) and something else. A lot will depend on what happens with the transfer tour. Perhaps Cinque Terre area or another Tuscan hill town. Open to suggestions here as well.

I'll post more as I find out. Please let me know if you are interested in any of this.

Thanks Janis & Dick. Looking forward to meeting you...

Update on the dining seating; called my TA and got it changed to the later seating (8:30pm), as originally requested.

Just noticed, for those who like sea days, although it looks like only 3 sea days on this cruise, you also have the evening/night preceding the day at sea, plus usually a morning. So, there is still plenty of underway time! However, when we get to Barcelona, it is one port right after another (Monaco, Livorno, Civitavecchia) in rapid succession. Sail at night and wake up in a different exotic port; no complaints here! Marty & Jeanne

I apologize again for getting on this thread so late and this may have already been addressed here (I am reading the threads and responding as I go, so I don't forget my thoughts). We booked the late seating in 2007, since the cruise was so port intensive and long port days. We have always preferred early seating for dinner. We found out, once on board. that the dinner times were postponed by 45 minutes on late sailing days to accomodate this. That meant we had dinner around 9:00 pm some nights and left the dining room at about 10:45. We actually got up from our table and walked directly to the grand gala midnight buffet (for pictures only) because our dinner was so late. If we do sail on this cruise, we will most likely pick the early dining time.

October:
Average = 23.0° C

People on the Amazing Race were not able to make connections in Paris with 45 minute seperation. I hear Paris airport is a pain.

It was definately a pain for us. We should have had a 2 hour layover going to Rome, but due to a delay leaving Atlanta, we only had about an hour and missed our flight and had to reschedule and barely made that one. On the return trip from Rome, the agent at the Rome airport somehow left our our docs for the connecting flight in Paris and we were delayed leaving Rome. When we finally got to Paris, they could not find our docs and we almost didn't make that flight either. On top of all of that, both my DH and I were pulled out of the line for a thorough search, which also delayed us. Needless to say, I hope that I don't have to connect through Paris again, but I will if the price is right.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Nick and Joanne - Thanks for your input. I remember that episode on "Raymond". I also love the "Under the Tuscan Sun" movie. Lake Bracciano looks gorgeous and all those little towns around it look so cute.

Terry - The towns on Lake Bracciano or the castle gets my vote. Tuscania also looks beautiful and interesting. Caponetti olive oil tasting sounds like fun. Borgo Ceri looks cute, but it is very small.

Just to let you know, my DH doesn't drink and I don't drink wine. If everyone else voted to go with the wine tasting, we would just go with and walk around during that time. We do like learning about the wine making process.

Nick, I understand that completely, I think that's why Joe wants to stay at the airport. We were on the subway in Rome and someone tried to steal his camera. I think he just dosen't want to deal with that, especially with trying to guard our luggage too. The subway was our only encounter with pickpockets, but it does make you a little apprehensive. When we go we will definitely have money belts on! Deanne

So sorry about hearing this. We have heard a lot stories about the pickpockets there. That is why we stay off the trains and subways. We use the taxis and tours around Rome and private drivers for transport between airport and Rome and ship. Of course we are very careful and cautious as well. The only time we felt the least bit threatened was when we were just walking around Rome. At the Spanish Steps, we separated to take pics of each other and I was approached by a man with flowers. I first told him "no thank you" and when he persisted, I yelled "NO" very loudly and he did not bother me again. Then we were walking around Rome the same afternoon and saw a group of guys in an alleway on motorcyles who did not look very nice. We ducked into a candy store and asked where the nearest taxi stand was. It was just across the street. We made a bee-line for a taxi and headed back to the area where our hotel was. We were staying in the Via Veneto area which was quite expensive, but felt so safe there, that I had no problem walking around the area alone without my husband.

Deanne, when you say someone tried to steal his camera, do you mean they were working "quietly" or was it more of a "grab and run" attempt? I'm not personally worried whatsoever about either form of theft, I will be locked down like Fort Knox (hidden pocket, camera bag across shoulder and neck held in front of me).

However, BOTH types of theft make me worried for my fiance. She is pretty headstrong and thinks she can carry a normal purse. I said, "Sure, but let me keep your passport and other critical items." So far she claims that she will hold on to those herself. I'm none too pleased about it, quite frankly. Maybe she will change her mind before we go.

I'm very good at packing light (I only took a carry on sized luggage on my last cruise) but I've never gone away for this long before so I'm a bit lost. I figured we would be going to the Cafe Buza pictured on the website ... http://www.croatiatravelblog.com/top-attractions-in-dubrovnik/. How's that for my planning ... :)

Josh is gone to school for the weekend :( so I'm hoping to loose myself in researching and planning tomorrow as its supposed to pour. The sun is supposed to come back on Sunday so I've got a long ride planned. Looking forward to that.

Joe was standing on the subway, with his camera in his front pocket. Two younger girls bumped into him, he felt one touch his waist then he put his hand on his camera. They immediately left our area of the subway. Maybe it was just an innocent bump, but I think stuff like that happens way too often. Tell you fiance to please be careful, I had my wallet stolen in Florida on vacation. They almost didn't let me on the plane to go home from Florida without I.d.. It's just not a pleasant experience to go through, especially when you are on your honeymoon.

Judy,

I was teasing about the spreadsheet. I think I can do it. I really appreciate you giving me the idea. Do you write each day and what you are going to wear for that day? It seems like that would avoid packing all the extra stuff. It would be nice if the weather would cooperate with the spreadsheet. If you don't do that, just give me an idea of what you include in your spreadsheet. Thanks:)

Janis, I would like a copy of your packing list too! How is your daughter in Lansing doing? I bet she likes the summer in Michigan better than the winter.

Marty, I was taking the Sogno thongo only for the Carnival Big Slide. Since I've decided not to go on the slide, I'm afraid there will be no room in my suitcase for the thongo!!

Denise

DD,

You are so sweet! Thanks for asking about Mandy. She is making tons of friends, but still talks about moving back to Texas someday. I think the weather may be a little better than in Texas right now. Yesterday she and a couple of dozen friends went on a 6 hour canoe ride, last week she saw Sheryl Crow in concert at a park in downtown Lansing, and has been enjoying baseball games there also. So I would say she is having a ncie summer.

I am thinking they might sell thongos in Europe, so you will be ok if you don't have room in your suitcase :D.

I will email you my packing list this afternoon.

I head each column with the day, travel day, port or sea day, then list what kind of clothes I need for morning, afternoon, and evening. ie. capris and top or long black dress.

Then I figure how many wearings I can get out of each piece. For example, if I shower and put on a pant suit just for the evening then it can surely be worn another time maybe even two. Of course if you don't shower that changes the formula!!! haha

For sea days, it is easy, swimsuit for most of the day then shorts and a tee shirt until dinner.

If anyone watches real closely they will see a lot of the same clothes. But I doubt that anyone will watch or even care what I wear except me. Even Ethel doesn't care and she's my roomate. In fact we both have some things that we will probably swap so as to lessen the load of clothes.

I would like tha packing list as most of my cruises have been to the Carib. and one to Alaska.

Judy,

We don't think it will be a swimsuit and shorts kind of cruise, but it shouldn't be cold either. I am hoping for no rain and going with the layering method myself. If you give me your email address, I will send you my packing lists.

Shala

Shala,

We are glad your Mom is doing better and getting excited about the cruise. Your story about Olive Garden cracked us up!!!

Ray and Jeanette

Welcome Ray & Jeanette! We were booked for a May 2007 Med cruise with Princess, but had to cancel because of work conflicts. We are finally going and are sooooo excited! We have hooked up and been booked on tours for a couple of months now, but there are still others wanting to meet up with others.

We loved those Raymond shows in Italy so much, that I recorded them to the hard drive of my receiver and look at them every so often.

Those episodes were on again last week and when my DH walked through the door he said "Are you watching that again?", then he sat down and watched them with me (again). He loves them too.

Janis, my wife and I watch those episodes everytime they come on. We brought a Gelato from the same place Robert brought his from and also the pier where he stood when he through his wallet in the water. We where there in October of 2008. For all intrested the weather was real nice, the only rain we had was the day we were in Cortona.

Shala,
We live in Michigan, but Joe goes to Staunton,VA often.

Denise

Denise!

Thanks! We are planning a trip there next year and hope to be able to relocate. It is nice to hear the the people are friendly, in Texas you get kinda spoiled by southern hospitality!

When we were in Rome last year, we rode the Subway and the busses and had no problems. I wore my purse across my body and just made sure I kept a hand on it and remained aware. We never had anyone attempt anything.

In the tourist areas, there are many of those annoying people that try and 'give' you flowers or other nonsense. Just say NO very forcefully and they will leave you alone.

You also need to watch your purse etc.. in the tourist areas--again common sense. Jeff put his money and credit card in his front pocket and put a rubber band around them... and then would keep his hand in his pocket sometimes as well.

I think part of the fun of being in Rome experiencing the local people. We never felt unsafe anywhere.

Anyway, just be careful and you will be fine.

Hey Liney,

I hope we all end up at the same Buza! Also, can you provide me with your email so I can send you my packing list? Did you get your bike ride in?

Janis

Hi Janis!

My email address is: february212@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance for the packing list! I'm getting so excited. It will be 3 months to the day (when we fly out) tomorrow (Tuesday)!! I'm trying hard not to wish and dream the summer away ...

Didn't end up riding this weekend :(. Saturday we had really hard, freak thunderstorms so I was nursing a migrane all day. Sunday a friend and I just went to a near by small town (Cobourg, Ontario) and enjoyed a relaxing brunch on the patio and did some window shopping at some neat boutiques, little cooking shops and antique stores.

Another thing to be aware of in Rome are the characters dressed in ancient Roman attire. It is not free to have your picture taken with them. They don't really tell you about it until after you have taken the picture.

We bought these pouches that go around your neck and have a security wire in the strap. You can tuck it in you shirt and it isn't even noticed. Mine is large enough to hold a small digital camera, passports, cash and memory.

I emailed Stefano with Rome Tours and asked him about being picked up at the airport on 10/15, going on a tour of rome, then being taken to the cruise ship dock. here is his reply. I assume we could customize this to save time. If anyone is interested in doing this, or you have something already in the works, email me at rgriffith@rlacyinc.com or etexbeachbum@yahoo.com.

The standard tour I provide in Rome is designed to cover the city
major sites in one day. Additional off the beaten path tours can be
arranged upon request of the client.
Pick up at 08,00 AM and Return at 5:30pm.
You will drive in a smooth motorway trough the country and see the Etruscan Landscapes.
It will take approx. one hour and ten minutes to get to Rome.
The drive will continue along Ostiense Road and arrive at the
Pyramid built for Caius Cestio .At this
stage of the tour we will be inside the ancient Roman Wall built by
Emperor Aureliano.
We will then arrive at the Circus Maximus, the large ancient stadium for
chariot races. Behind the stadium you
will see the Palatine Hill where the villas and the domus of the
emperors were built. At this point you will
be able to see the Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum. We will stop
here, and you will be able to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum on
your own if you wish. In order to avoid lengthy, and time consuming
queues, I will obtain the entry tickets in advance as a complimentary
service for my clients. The fees for the entry tickets will be added to
the final bill.
The Colosseum charges 12 Euros per ticket.
Following the Colosseum, we will drive by the Piazza Venezia where you
will see the Vittorio Emanuele Monument, dedicated to the first king of
Italy.
After the Colosseum there will be a stop for lunch (45 minutes).
We can recommend a quick café (10 Euros pp) or a traditional Italian restaurant (15/20 Euros pp)

Now will be the time to visit the Vatican Museum.

Entrance fee is 14 Euros per person.
Please note that the Vatican Does not pre-sell tickets.
Priority entrance tickets can be booked through the Vatican Museums at 18 Euros per person and they will be picked up at the moment of the tour. Please note that to be sure to avoid the long lines the only way is to book and pre-pay advanced tikcets through the Vatican Museums at their website http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/tickets/do?weblang=en&do
by clicking on ADMISSION TICKETS. Timeslot 2PM

If you wish to have a tour guide in the
Vatican Museum I can book one at a price of 60 Euros per hour for up to 6 people (75 Euros for up to 8 people).
It will take at least two hours to visit the Museum, The Sistine Chapel and S.Peter's Basilica.
When booking please confirm if you would like to book a private guide.

Please note that the Vatican Museums:
Is closed on Sundays.

Our next destination will be the Pantheon, once the temple of all Roman
gods, then a church and burial place for kings and artists (Raphael).
Trevi fountain will follow. Here you can toss a coin in the fountain to
ensure a return visit to Italy.
Finally, you can rest and have a seat on the Spanish Steps.
Please note that the order in which we will visit the sites may vary
pending traffic conditions or other third party act. The tour can be
altered to personalize your desires.
Additional costs for entry tickets are not included in the tour fee, and the costs for entry tickets purchased in advance will be added to the final bill. The fees for the tours
include tolls and parking, and are required in Euro funds.
Kindly dress appropriately in order to be able to enter a church (knees and shoulders covered).

Tour fee:
for up to three people will be 450 euros
for up to four people will be 500 Euros
for up to six people will be 550 Euros
for up to eight people will be 600 euros
(does not include entrance fees to Colosseum and Vatican Museum and lunch)

Welcome Commissioner.
Speaking of flights, we got ours using miles. I realized I hadn't checked on them recently and there was a change. Going on the 11 our flight times changed but only by 5 minutes. Our return flight was booked through US Air but was with Air Canada. It was supposed to be non-stop FCO to Toronto, the a regional jet to Philly. Now it is a direct flight stopping in Montreal before going to Toronto. We arrived with 40 minutes to get through customs and then onto our Philadelphia flight. I had to call since this definitely wouldn't work. Anyway they changed the flight from Toronto to a later one. It is going to be one long day.

On the bright side, we don't arrive in Venice until 2 PM on the 18th and FOUR of the ships you listed will apparently be leaving the day we arrive. I'm not sure if all of the ships have an early afternoon arrival to next day early afternoon departure, but if they do we should be ok.

I just popped over to the TA rollcall and thought about getting caught up. Those people are crazy, they have 433 pages. I guess I won't get as caught up as I thought.

I just did a quick check and our cruise has 67 cabins still showing on Carnival. We will get a better count after final payment date, Friday isn't it. That is when all the travel agents will return the cabins they are holding but aren't sold. The TA is sold out and not even listed as a cruise, hopefull that will change after the final payment date also.

Good Morning Dreamers

The Dreamers have been a chatty bunch lately. Maybe it has something do to with how close we're getting? :D

Judy, thanks for the info on the ships in port. It certainly helps with the planning and what to expect.

etexbeachbum - We paid $630 pp non-stop from Detroit. I was pretty happy with that price. We do have a layover in Amsterdam on the way home, but don't mind since that gives us a chance to see another city. Speaking of which, I really need to find a place to stay there. With all the summer activities, I've been neglecting my cruise to do list.

We would join you but then what would we do with the day and 1/2 that we will have after the cruise? We had planned to use the HOHO bus to see the ancient areas, Trevi Fountain, Sp Steps, etc on Tues, then do the Vatican tour early Wed morning. With whatever time we have left over we could then hit the sights that we didn't get to the day before. Since we have a 9:25 return flight we don't want to be up too late on Wed. We have the private shuttle for 2 at 100 euro. We figure we will stroll around Civi until it is time to board or something like that.

We have been back from Dallas for almost a week now. I keep trying to get caught up with the posts but couldn't quite make it. this thread is really getting busy! We had a great time visiting Ernie's brother and family. It was hot but not unbearable.
Terry- we are early seating dinner. I see there are not many of us. Maybe because of all the ports but we didn't have any trouble making dinner last year.
Shala- I will put you on the list for train to Civ. let me know what you decide. Did you look into the convent?
We had great weather when we did our cruise last October. I think layers is the way to go. I didn't bring enough short sleved things last year. I thought it would be cooler. It was in the mid 70's every day and we only had a light rain one day in Florence. Having said that we did Turkey last year where we will be doing more northery ports this year so I think I am going to bring a little of everything a a lot of things to layer. We definately used our swimsuits on sea days. I will pack one!
Hope to post again soon
Diane

Diane,

Welcome back. Are you planning on taking the train to Pompeii, then on to Sorrento? I have not had much luck trying to find schedules for that run.

What about the return. From what I can tell the hydrofoil doesn't run in Oct.

Since you have had experience in Oct what can you tell me about all this?

Thanks.

Well, we bit the bullet and booked this cruise with only 92 days left to plan EVERYTHING. Even though this is our second Grand Med cruise, we could use a lot of help with all the last minute plans that we need to make regarding airfare, hotels and excursions.

We are flying out of Mobile, AL and plan to arrive on May 14, then stay in Rome until October 30 or 31. I need to book our rooms and hope to stay in Civitavecchia the one night pre-cruise and in Rome post cruise. I used Stephano for transport last time and found him to be very good. I was able to find another couple to share the transport from the hotel in Rome to the ship and two couples to share the transport from the ship to the Hilton/Airport after the cruise which saved us all some bucks.

If anyone still has room for us in transport and wants to share the costs, please let me know. We need the following transport:

May 14 airport to hotel, either Rome or Civit if we can book there
May 27 - Ship to Rome
October 30 or 31 - Rome to airport.

We are also wondering if any of you have room on any private tours in the ports before we book on our own. The large group of Cruise Critics we sailed with in May 2007 were able to book a bus at Sicily for the day to go to Taormina for a very low cost per person (around $20 each) and we booked a private boat in Venice as a group. They picked us up at the ship dock and took us to Murano and Burrano. One of the ladies arranged a good group price on the gondola rides for all of us, but we were flooded out that day.

We also love the idea of the ship crawl and hope that we can still jump in with all of you who have posted here for so long, even though we are LATE LATE LATE joining in.

Ray and Jeanette

PS Just wondering if any of you were on board with us on the May 1, 2007 Freedom Grand Med tour.

Many of us are staying at the Hotel Triano in Cive. They provide shuttle services from the airport and to the ship. Airport shuttle is fee based upon number of occupants and the ship shuttle is free.

We arrive on the 13th so we can't share the shuttle with you, but there should be others.

Many of us are staying at the Hotel Triano in Civi pre-cruise. They provide shuttles to/from the airport and to the ship. The airport shuttle is fee based upon occupancy but the airport shuttle is free. It is a very nice hotel, we stayed there last year.

We are arriving on the 13th so we can't share the ride with you, but someone may.

Ray, We are staying at the Hotel Triano in Civi the night of the 14th with my BIL and SIL, but he hotel shows booked up for the night of the 14th. Check with them and if you can get in the hotel, we arrive FCO at 8:45am United and BILand SIL arrive at 8:50am on US Air. We have the hotel transfer booked from airport to hotel on the 14th and from the hotel to airport on the 28th. We are staying over the night of th 27th. If you are able to book the Hotel Triano let me know what time you arrive at FCO and we might be able to make arrangements with the shuttle. The hotel has our flight time and will meet us at baggage pickup with a sign with my name.

Thanks. We will look into the Traino and if it is booked, we will try to find something else there. We used Stefano for transport last time and will most likely check with him again, but had hoped that we could share the ride and the costs with other cruisers.

I just got great news. I noticed on the Carnival site that the cost of the cruise had gone down this morning and contacted my TA. She said that since we are still 92 days out (penalty period) that she got the new rate so I saved $420.:)

Hi! I haven't posted here in a while. 90 days until my flight leaves, so I'm getting pretty excited. Tried catching up on a few posts, but there are just far too many!

My wife and I actually did not pay anything for the plane tickets, as they were a wedding gift! We will be seated in the Late seating dining area.

We were originally getting in to Rome at 7:45am on October 14th, but I had to change my flights out of the U.S. yesterday, as Delta changed my flight leaving Anchorage (on NWA) to leave 12 hours earlier, and I really didn't want a 12 hour layover in MN. So, after talking with the incredible lady at Delta she actually put us on all Delta flights to Rome! That should cut down on the possiblity of luggage getting lost, so that worked out very nicely. We'll now be getting into Rome on October 14th at around 10:30am, and going straight from there to Hotel Traiano. Looks like quite a lot of people will be staying there.

We're probably going to stay at a Marriott (haven't booked it quite yet, playing with prices) in rome near FCO the evening we get back, as we don't leave until the next day. So we should get some time to spend in Rome.

My wife and I are toying with the idea of not getting back on the ship in Naples and instead spending the sea day visiting the Ferrari Museum in Maranello and meeting the ship back in Venice. I'm a huge F1/Ferrari fan and I've always wanted to do that. Has anyone else had an experience skipping a sea day and rejoining the ship at another port?

Now we just have to look at the shore excursions. The Vesuvius/Pompeii excursions are the ones that really interest me the most. Are there any other excursions that anyone thinks would be fantastic?

Thanks everyone for all the flight info. Jill, that $580/p is a great price. I ended up making ours on American. Great flight times out of DFW and we get to Rome at 7:55 am. Paid 830/person. Right after i held the reservation the price jumped $200, but i still had the old price on hold. I'm happy with it. I know all of you were concerned. ;) Now, on to booking tours. Dang, one thing after another. Anyone interested in that 10/15 Rome tour with airport pickup and pier drop off?

We were lucky to get that. The taxes and fee are actually more than the fare. LOL I've never seen a fare that low for PHL to FCO. Last year we paid $684 and thought that was a deal.

Oh well, more money to donate in the casino. LOL

What is everyone doing in Messina?

Hi everyone, We used frequent flyer miles, so I'm not sure how much we paid for the airline tickets.

Terry, We just changed our day of arrival to Rome. It will be October 12.
I just sent you an email. If you guys are going to Florence still, we can go on Tuesday the 13th. Let me know. Or, if anyone else will be in Rome at that time and wants to tag along let me know. We would take the train early in the morning and come home in the evening as of now. I guess if we got enough people we could hire a shuttle. As many of you know, we will be in Florence on Monday on the ship and the Uffizi and the Accedemia ( the David), as well as some other museums are closed on Mondays.

Take Care, Denise

Judy- we are planning to go to Herculaneum on the train. Last year we went to Pompeii. It is the same train Pompeii is just a little further. You can find all the train schedules on www.italiarail.com and prices. The train runs very frequently so there is no worry getting back. I am making a list of people who would like to go with us to the train. Let me know if you want to join us. We plan on leaving as soon as we can get off the boat. I don't know about the hydrofoil but it makes sense that they may not run in Oct.

Who did you book your transportation with at 100 Euro?? I believe you are going to the port from the airport, is that correct?? Through rome cabs it is $130 Euro to the port from Rome.

Welcome Commodore & DW and Ray & Jeanette. The cabin crawl should be a lot of fun! Did you read about the Dream, Dream, Dream t-shirt contest?

Diane - Glad you and Ernie had a nice visit in Texas. Do you have us down for the train trip in Naples?

Judy - Thanks for the information on the ships in port.

Does anyone know how much it costs to get a pic with a Gladiator at the Colosseum?

A couple questions:

1. It has been 7 years since my last cruise, and I can't even come close to remembering how long it takes, approximately, to get all of the passengers off the ship at each port? Of course, this ship is huge and holds more people than most cruise ships anyway, but I would like a general idea. I've made fairly detailed itineraries for each port, and this info would certainly help me with the fine tuning.

For example, what about the ports where we dock around 7 AM? At that hour, assuming one is completely ready to leave the ship at 7AM, when can one expect to be standing on land? I know this isn't an exact science, I'm just curious. Would the wait be significantly longer for a 10 AM docking (Dubrovnik) or 2 PM docking (Venice)?

2. Does anyone know what ports we will be at in Venice and Dubrovnik? I've heard that some ships can dock right near St. Mark's Square in Venice, while others have to go to the actual ports. As for Dubrovnik, will we be docked in the port right at Old Town? Also, in say, Barcelona, will a smaller boat take us to the shore around the Columbus Monument? I only ask because I have our itinerary that day beginning near the monument.

Thanks for any info, advice, opinions, etc.!

The going rate is 5 to 10 EURO's. I refused that price and gave him 2 euro's and he called me a cheap American SOB. He asked me for 10 euros first I told him know then he said 5 an like I said I gave him 2 and told him to take it or leave it. He took it but was not happy.

In Barcelona a shuttle bus drops you at the Trade Centre, at least I think that's what it is called, which is near the Columbus Monument at the foot of Las Ramblas. Sorry don't know about the other ports.

In Venice we will tie up at the Bacino Stazione Marittimo. You will have to take a water taxi or land ttransportation to get over St Marks. As to the time to get off the ship, it all depends upon the local customs people clearing the ship/passengers for entry. It is not an exact science, sometimes it can be quite a wait. At least this won't be the first time the ship will be in these ports, which should help. There will be 5 ports on the TA that it will be the firs time for the ship. They have a ceremony at each port when it is the first time for the ship to arrive.
I hope this was of some help.

Here is an extract from one of John Healds blogs:

We have a shuttle buses that run from the ship to Piazza Roma every 15 minutes for which you pay the driver $5 for a round trip. Vaporettos run every 15 minutes until midnight when they run from St. Mark’s Square on the hour every hour.

So I guess it isn't free. I have heard of people walk over also.

Here is a copy of a post by Happy1 from the Liberty in May 2006:

Our family of 4 sailed May 31st on the Carnival Liberty 12 night trip in the Mediterranean. We consider ourselves “frugal cruisers” and enjoy finding ways to make the trip more economical, preferring to do things on our own rather than purchase shore excursions. We traveled lightly so we could easily haul our own luggage, with each of us taking a “pull” suitcase and an individual backpack (since the children are now 14 and 11, they were able to help tremendously).

The journey began with a drive to Chicago, as the least expensive flights we could find were on Aer Lingus from Chicago to Dublin, then Dublin to Rome. Flight times resulted in our needing to stay a day in Dublin, so we booked the Holiday Inn City Center for about $100 (one of the few hotels that allowed children in the room). Bus transportation from airport to City Center was 8Euro for the entire family (they offered a family pass for that price). By the luggage area in the airport there was an information desk where the pass could be purchased. This was a great introduction to Europe since we spoke the same language. We spent the day “walking” about Dublin to stay awake, so we’d adjust to the correct time more quickly. We took a cab to the airport for our early morning flight to Rome.

After arriving in Rome, we took the Leonardo Da Vinchi train from the airport (there are signs directing you to the trains) to the Termini station which is approx 20 minutes. Cost was 9 Euro per person, and we purchased the tickets from a vending machine at the station. Trains run every 30 minutes, so there is no need to worry about the “schedule”. Signs marking each station were easily seen from the windows on the train, so there was no confusion about which station we should exit. Arranging lodging was somewhat of a challenge, as many hotels in our price range required us to book two rooms to accommodate 4 people (they only allowed a max of 3 per room). To save money we contacted the Hostel Des Artistes and arranged for a family room in the hostel for 108E credit card or 105E cash. I was a little nervous about this but it turned out to be a great part of our adventure. The hotel itself is approximately 3 blocks north from the Termini station. (Tip – make sure you exit the north end of the station. We exited the south side which resulted in our needing to walk the entire way around the station, mostly uphill. In hindsight I’d have done this walk inside the station where there are escalators. Just don’t take any steps “down” when exiting the train and head to the main part of the station. The train from the airport comes in on the South side.) The directions provided by the hostel were easy to follow and we went to the 5th floor for check-in. The lift was very small and only accommodated two people with luggage. The room we booked was a “family room” which had 4 single beds and a color TV with basic cable. We did not pay for a/c, since we were traveling in late May and the windows provided a lovely breeze. Our room had a sink but the toilet/shower was down the hall. One floor up was a beautiful “garden”
with plants, tables, and chairs. It was nice retreating there to write post-cards, read, or enjoy beverages which they sold at the hostel. We were pleased with our decision to stay here two nights, and it allowed us to get over any jet lag before starting our cruise. Within walking distance were local restaurants and pizza places. Our original plan was to walk to the Coliseum, ruins, and Trevi Fountain and take a bus back, but the walk wasn’t that taxing so we did the entire day on foot (with frequent stops for gelato.)

Rome to Civ: we took the train from Termini station. There are kiosks in the main terminal that accept credit cards and English is one of the selections under languages. There is no need to book a reserve ticket as trains run approx. every 30 minutes. Just purchase your ticket, read the board to determine which “line” the train is using, and validate it in the yellow machine where you get on the train. The ticket for the four of us to Civ was 14E. I’d estimate the ride was 40 minutes. After exiting the train we decided to walk to the shuttle bus at port rather than splurging on a taxi. This took approx 10 minutes. If you are able and don’t have excessive luggage, it is no problem to simply follow the water until you reach the port entrance. Everywhere in Europe there are stairs and uneven pavement (or cobblestones), so make sure your luggage can be pulled and is fairly stable. A free shuttle bus takes you to the ship. Embarkation was easy and by noon we were on board heading to the buffet. We spent the rest of the day exploring the ship and preparing for our first port in the morning.

Liberty Ship Info: this ship was our “favorite” ship to date. Layout was good (ignoring the central dining rooms which block traffic flow front to back on two levels). Décor was nice and remained interesting throughout the voyage. Pools we didn’t use, but there were plenty of deck chairs and “quiet spots” could be found. My only complaint was the library which had limited hours. (I much prefer the “open” libraries on Celebrity, where books are available throughout the day.) Food ranged from good to exceptional, and an emphasis has been placed on presentation. Service in the dining room was nice, and the 24hour room service, pizza, and ice-cream were welcome when we returned from port after a long day. Most days we found ourselves eating breakfast, heading ashore, and then returning for our early seating dinner at either 5:45 or 6pm. Most evenings the kids ordered room service so they had a snack before bed (I wouldn’t guess Caesar Salad would be their preferred bedtime snack, but it became a tradition.) The cabin TV’s received the European news channel, a music video channel, a kid’s movie channel, cartoon network, and showed a daily movie. There were additional stations, depending on which port one was near. Charges to the sign and sail card could be checked on the TV each day, along with the dining room dinner menu. There were two broadway type shows, several shows using guest talent, a singer who performed twice, and a comedian. The comedian Percy Cruise was rated PG 17 which I didn’t quite understand (I think they meant PG 13, as it was fine for my 14 year old). Entertainment did not seem “up to” what we experienced on Caribbean voyages, but most people were too tired to participate and preferred resting up for the next day’s adventure. The cruise director Brent I enjoyed more than most, though the daily program was somewhat confusing. (As this was the second Med voyage for the season, some of the programs referred to our “seven day trip” and the typos were amusing.) The seaside big screen was enjoyable, and several evenings we viewed a late night movie snuggled under blankets on deck.

Naples: Our plan was to visit Herculaneum, as we wanted to avoid the crowds at Pompeii. We printed the photos from portreviews.com so we could locate the train station based on the church steeple nearby and referenced them from the top deck before disembarking the ship. This gave us the direction to head for our 15-20 minute walk. Naples is a zoo of traffic, and I don’t recommend anyone even consider renting a car at this port. It was almost comical to see drivers honking at one another when there was no place to “move”. Train tickets cost 3.50E each and the ticket seller instructed us to get off at Erculanum. The train journey was fun as there was a variety of ages traveling on this “local train” so it was a great opportunity to “people watch”. When we exited the train it was an easy walk through town to the ruins. Don’t remember the exact price (maybe 40 E for the 4 of us) to enter Herculaneum. We didn’t go on a tour, but walked about referencing information we read prior to our visit. Talking with people who visited Pompeii on the ship excursions, we were glad we opted for this journey, as they were in crowds the entire time. I’ve read it is easy to take the bus to Herculaneum which would avoid the walk to/from the train station, but didn’t have details so we didn’t pursue this option.

Venice: Instead of taking the Carnival shuttle for a charge ($6 per person) we decided to walk to the vaparrato station. This took about 20 minutes (look for signs for Roma Station). We purchased a 24 hour vaparrato pass for the water busses, which allowed us to go all over the city without worry. They had an outside area to sit so we considered this our “cheap” gondola ride. The vaparrato pass cost 12E per person. One-way tickets were 5E so if you plan to use transportation to/from both days you are visiting Venice; the 24 hour pass was a better deal. Water taxis were available for a cost of about 70E but one must telephone for this service (the number was listed on a sign at the dock). We spent the evening strolling St. Mark’s square, feeding the pigeons, and enjoying the music at the outside café’s. Streets were truly magical and simply following the meandering alleys and viewing the store windows provided our entertainment for the evening. The following morning we planned to visit the Doges Secret Itineraries tour, but took the wrong water bus and ended up missing our tour time. (Some busses have a 45 minute travel time while others are direct and are 20 minutes. There are signs noting this, but we must have been too sleepy to notice.) We strolled the water-front and enjoyed local scenery before heading back to the ship.

Dubrovnik: We took a taxi to the walled city for 10 Euro (pre-negotiated at the pier.) The driver kept trying to “sell” us on a local tour about the area, but we were firm in wanting to just visit the city. Make sure you have change in Euro, as the driver claimed he was unable to change a larger bill (luckily we had enough coin to cover the fare). Walking the walled city was delightful though the climb up the stairs reminded me I’d eaten too many meals with not enough exercise. We used an ATM machine to obtain Kuna (most places took both Euro and Kuna, but the price was better if one used the local currency). Overall prices seemed to be the least expensive here, so plan to purchase souvenirs if there is something you are seeking. We chose to walk back to the ship which was mostly downhill, about 20-30 minutes. Before entering the dock we walked through a local co-op grocery store and stocked up on sodas and other misc. items that were cheaper than on the ship. A bus station is located beside the area where the ship docks, so future travelers may want to investigate this service to the walled city.

Messina: After researching the train/bus options to visit Taormina, we decided to rent a car through argusrentals.com. The rental location was about two blocks heading right from the port exit along the water-front, directly across from the coast guard facility. Having seen drivers in Naples and Rome, we were nervous, but island driving is very laid-back and easy. The rental agent provided an excellent map and wrote directions of how we should go. He even listed the two parking streets in Taormina where one deposits Euro into a machine for a parking ticket. The drive took about 30 minutes on an interstate type road. After walking the town we took the funivia cable-way down to the beach for 3.5E each. The beach itself wasn’t “sandy” like in the Caribbean, and we chose due to the chilly water to rent a pedal boat for 12E to enjoy an hour on the water. There were caves and coves along the shore and this was a delightful way to spend the afternoon. For anyone renting a car, there are gas stations when returning to Messina, so don’t forget to fill the tank. Also, rental agencies tend to close for the long lunch period so make sure you arrange drop-off details (they will have someone to meet you or instruct you to leave the vehicle and drop the key). We took the insurance to cover the deductible and given the tight turns and parking situation in Taormina, were glad we didn’t have to worry about “kissing” guard rails.

Barcelona: Instead of taking the cruise shuttles for $5 each, we took a local shuttle for $2.5. The local bus is at the other end of the parking lot from the cruise shuttle (easy to find). After walking Las Ramblas and enjoying the street performers, artists, and musicians, we headed to the Sangria Familia. It was quite a hike and at this point we were getting tired. Instead of waiting for the shuttle to return to the ship, we chose to walk back and were glad to get on board to rest our weary legs. Make sure you check out the food market on the left side of Las Ramblas (when heading north from the water). We enjoyed seeing an amazing array of fruits, meats, and vegetables new to us.

Cannes: This was the only port where tenders were used, and the operation was very efficient. The trip via tender took approx 5 minutes, and they used nice city boats rather than the smaller enclosed lifeboats we’ve encountered on other ships. After walking the streets to do some shopping, we hit the sandy beach just left of where the tender docked (left when one is exiting the tender, just follow the water). The beach was free and was a mix of cruise passengers and local tourists (some which were topless). It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Snacks and drinks were available just across the street from vendor carts.

Livorno: Our original plan was to visit Pisa and Lucca, but at this point in the journey we were exhausted. After taking the Carnival shuttle into town (don’t remember the price), it dropped you by an information booth. They had signs posted for the #1 bus to the train station directing us a block toward a church. There one purchases a 1E ticket for the bus either via kiosk or at the Tobacco stands. The kiosk was somewhat confusing and everyone was tired. We saw a frustrated family head back returning to the ship for a day of relaxation, but decided to persevere. After taking the #1 bus, we purchased our train ticket for Pisa. I believe the roundtrip train ticket was about 12E for the four of us. From there it was a 15 minute walk to the leaning tower. We took the usual photos of us holding up the tower, used the restroom (.30E, the cleanest we had found), then shopped the many souvenir vendors around the perimeter, haggling with the vendors selling fake Rolexes and other high-end watch and sunglass knock-offs. There were many places to eat with menus posted along with snack stands near the tower itself. We returned to the ship pleased with how we chose to spend the day, and packed for the return voyage home.

Disembarkation: Rather than leaving our suitcases outside the door, we chose to self-disembark as soon as the first group was called. This meant carrying our luggage, which wasn’t a big deal since we had packed light for easy handling. There was a long line for cabs and since we hadn’t prearranged a pick-up, we walked to the train station. There appeared to be no busses to shuttle one back through the port (or at least the rep was unaware when we asked.) My advice is to ask about this before leaving the ship, as the language skills of the agents on shore were not great. The walk was long, it was hot, and by the time we reached the train station we were ready for a restful trip. The train was crowded as we were traveling during rush-hour, so we ended up standing with our luggage. Anyone choosing this option should check when purchasing their return train ticket about a “transfer” as some people exited the train to take another to the airport before reaching Termini station. We stayed on until reaching Termini station, where we got on the Leonardo Da Vinchi express train back to the airport, retracing many of our stops.

Tips: Relax and go with the flow. Italians have a slower pace, which is hard for type-A personalities. Validate train or bus tickets in the yellow machines after purchase. Use luggage you can handle easily. Pack light and don’t worry about looking like a foreigner, just dress respectfully for the places you are visiting. Even if we purchased clothes in Italy, blonde hair and fair skin made us stand out in the crowd. (Shorts were rarely seen anywhere, skirts and capris were popular for ladies, slacks for men.) Keep Euro handy for the street performers as some of the music and human statues we experienced were highlights of our trip. Wear shoes that are comfortable that won’t get “stuck” in cobblestone streets or uneven pavement. Look out for drivers and stay in cross-walks (in cities they won’t look out for you, so be wary and alert.) If you are connecting in a European airport, allow plenty of time for connections. We missed our return flight from Dublin due to a delay coming out of Rome. Airports work differently than in the US where one can switch from one plane to another within the security area. Dublin required us to clear customs and return to check-in again which the US agent who booked our flight apparently did not understand. Lastly, don’t overdo scheduling “to do’s” so the trip becomes a burden. Early on we realized there is much to see and limited time. Pick some highlights and slow down to enjoy the trip. When I think of the plethora of cultures, history, and people we experienced, it truly was the trip of a lifetime. Enjoy your journey.

I found it under Ports of call Europe.

Nick and Joanne

Nick & Joanne, we could not get into the Traino hotel due to booking this trip so late, but we did book at the Bramante Hotel in Civitavecchi, which I believe is very close to the Traino. We have not yet finalized our air travel plans, so we don't know yet what time we arrive in Rome. Once we find out, if we are arriving at the approx time as you, maybe we could share transport from the airport to the hotels. We will arrive on the 14th though. At any rate, it would be great if some of us who are staying in that area could plan an early dinner together the night before we sail.

What Cat. do you have? We have a 8B Balcony booked with military discount. Did all the Cat have price drop? I have my TA checking for me. Thank you for the Info. I might not beable to get anything since we paid it of in January.

Nick

We are category 9-E Balcony on the Vista deck (#9404). I just kind of stumbled onto this price drop and passed it on the TA. Today is 90 days, so hopefully you can still get an adjustment.

Oops, I said 9E and it was an 8E Balcony. The first price I got on Monday from Carnival and my TA was $4342.88 including taxes and fees. Wednesday it went to $3922.88 for a $420 price reduction. That more than covered our travel insurance. I just checked on-line a few minutes ago and the rate for same class balcony was back up to $4122.88, an increase of $200. I just lucked out with my timing on this one by checking it when I did, although today's rate would still be a savings over Wednesday's rate. Those of you who booked early, probably got a much better rate than we did booking this late. Our last Grand Med cruise was booked 9 months in advance and the prices soared during the last few months before the cruise.

We got the rates from the Liberty. We were one of the people that kept having to change ships because they weren't returning to the Med this last spring. It worked out great. Our cabins for both cruises come to less than the Grand Med current price and we have $1100 OBC.

Jeanette and Ray that dinner togather sound good.. Like I said we have the hotel shuttle booked from the airport. You might went to check with hotel when you make your flight arrangement if you can have them pick you up also. It is 140e that we are now splitting it two ways which is 70e per couple, if you can get it it will be only 50e per couple. Does the Bramante provide shuttle from airport?

dlbutler, thanks for the extremely helpful replies. That really gives me a lot to work with. I'm already perfecting my Venice and Barcelona itineraries. :)

I just hope there are enough shuttles going to and from the cruise ship... John Heald's quote: "We have a shuttle buses that run from the ship to Piazza Roma every 15 minutes for which you pay the driver $5 for a round trip" could be a good or a bad thing.

I would rather walk if it's going to take forever to get on a bus. I mean, we should probably assume that arriving at 2 PM in Venice will result in some extreme crowds on the way off the boat, onto the buses, etc.

Again, if I sound like an idiot, forgive me. I have been on four cruises in my life, but the last one was seven years ago (and the ones prior to that were in my childhood and teen years). I can't remember how well the exiting system works.

The site said that they have a free shuttle from the hotel to the ship and offer a shuttle service from the airport to the hotel (no price yet). As soon as I get my flight arrangements, I will check on both their shuttle and the possibility of joining in with the rest of you. What time are all of you expecting to arrive at the airport in Rome on the 14th? We are trying to get in between 10:30 and and 11:30 am. We will most likely book the flights with our TA next week.

By the way, our TA had us down for early dinner, but I emailed her today to ask for late seating. I will see when I get my final confirmation.

I don't know how many of you have heard about the travel bears that cruise around the world with various cruise passengers. I had booked the one named "Joe Cool" for our May 2010 cruise to Jamaica and Grand Cayman, but decided to cancel it. I asked to have one of the bears join us on the Grand Med Dream tour, so I will be bringing along "Aussie Bear" who is visiting us from the "down-under."

The shuttle from the Hotel Triano isn't a public shuttle. It is their van and the guy that drives it also works the desk. I am not sure you could take it to another hotel.

Denise - My group of 4 is on British Air. Do you mean you are on our flight from London to Rome because our flight originates from Houston ... I noticed you are in Michigan?

Hope everyone has a nice 4th of July weekend. I went to Galveston with a friend on Friday ... almost looks like pre-Ike Galveston, except for the oaks along Broadway. It's very sad to see those old oaks dying (for those of you not from Texas, the salty floodwaters from Hurricane Ike have killed most of the old, majestic oak trees which lined the main boulevard into Galvston). Anyway one-by-one the stores are re-opening and the crowds have definitely come back.

Time for the fireworks!

Gail

Hi Denise... Sharon and Jess are on British Airways. We leave from Los Angeles and fly straight through to London.. Leave London at 2:15 pm on the 13th... is this the same flight as you and Gail are on????

Ciao Y'all!

Apologize for being so sporadic; it's been very hectic! With trying to squeeze in mini-vacations with the boys, well....you get the idea!

Also, my desktop CPU is still in the shop, but I should have it back early next week. Right now, I have to beg time from Jeanne on her laptop, and she is doing her Master's degree online!

Very busy thread :), seems like we are "percolating" as we get closer to the cruise. On my cruise countdown, we sail in 90 days !! Wow!

My planning is currently on hold, but we're in good shape. When I resume, I'll be looking at Messina. I'm thinking of a beach resort and had looked at a few online. I'll be back in full planning mode in a couple of weeks, after my boys head back to SD.

Again, welcome to all new members of Sogno, Sogno, Sogno! As I recall, we have tentatively planned (as a group);

1. meet & greet at the Sunset Bar (aft pool area) for sail-away
2. cabin-crawl with thongo, errrr, t-shirt contest
3. rendevous at Cafe Buza in Dubrovnic at 5 pm local

Did I miss anything? Btw, did anyone see the new pics of the Dream on John Heald's blog? Bella Navella!!

Arrivederci,

Happy Canada Day!

Thanks for the reminder; I just wished Jeanne Happy Canada Day :)

Jill - Vegas sounded like fun. Get well soon (URI). I want to take Jeanne to Vegas (I've been once; stayed at Luxor). Funny, I wanted to take her and stay at the Venetian, but the real Venice is much better ...

All- regarding Venice, I believe the Maritima is where all the cruise ships dock. On John Heald's blog, he said there is a vaporetto (water taxi) station at the bow of the ship, however, the vaporettos stop running here at midnight. Since we'll be over-nighting, and it is come and go as you please, after midnight you have to take a shuttle bus to another main vaporetto stop and those run all night.

Sharon (Sassse) - great! How many in your party? I will contact Tour of Italy and let them know.

Janis/All - here's the link to our photo site. To all newcomers; if you want to, some of us have posted pics of ourselves sort of like an "e-Meet & Greet". Here's the link;

http://************************

Vicki & Gordie - agree totally, cold weather/water & the Thongo definitely do not go together :o. Gordie - if you do decide to sport the Thongo and mow the grass, be careful not to let the weedeater get away from you !!

Vicki/All- I second the celebratory toast when we go under 100 days! When we reach it, everyone post a reminder and raise the glass of your adult beverage of choice :)!!

I went online (Google) and was looking at beaches near Messina. Some interesting places. Might be an all-inclusive resort you can purchase a day pass to and use their beach...

One more day and it's another weekend! For the 4th, due to the drought, Texas has a ban on fireworks with sticks (e.g. bottle rockets) and rockets with fins on them. I think Roman Candles, etc are still o.k.

Arrivederci,

Marty & Jeanne

I am not real busy this morning and decided to check Carnival for open cabins (hoping for an upsell), with the following results:

Interior: 2
Oceanview: 22 may be more, 2 catagories show max 10
Balcony: 39 may be more, 2 catagories show max 10
Suite: 13 may be more, 1 catagory shows max 10

Total: 74

Now all we need is for cabins to become available on the TA also.

Hi Sharon, this is Marty. I've been the "blogger" as Jeanne has been too busy with her school work. I do get her on here periodically to catch up on the posts.

Vicki & Gordie (Yooperwoody) I believe. And, Etexbeachbum? I think they were a possibility and if they confirm that they are staying on the tour with us, we'll get an 8 passenger van. I will touch base with the tour operator just to remind him of our reservation...

All- hope everyone's having a good weekend. We just got back from the movies...saw the latest Harry Potter movie. Boys are doing great and as soon as I get my CPU back, I'll post some pics...

Hi all, Keeping caught up on all the postings. Finally reserved our room in Rome at the Argentina Residenzia as we wanted to stay in the Pantheon area. Trip paid in full now. We also hope to get offered an upsale as time gets closer!

ICKZ my husband is really into F1 too. We are leaving out of Milan at the end of the trip and considered going to the Ferrari museum. When you said Maranello I didn't realize it was south of Milan. Don't think we would skip the sea day to go up there but at least for a change my husband will have someone to talk F1 to. Our Weekends revolve around taping qualifying and the race. When we are in Monaco I put him in charge and he wants to go to some of the bars that are renouned that line the streets of the race track. (city streets)

Have enjoyed planning for this trip. Carribean cruises just don't need this much aforethought!!!

I was just posting on the TA rollcall and realized thatthe TA will be arriving in 5 ports for the first time. According to John Heald, they have a ceremony at each new port the first time you visit it. It also means you have to contend with the problems of being there the first time (transpertation, customs, etc). At least we shouldn't have any problems in that regard.

I will be contacting the tour operator "Tour of Italy" this week, to remind of our reservation and receive confirmation. I will continue to periodically do this, as we get closer...

All- we FINALLY got some MUCH NEEDED rain yesterday afternoon. The drought weather pattern seems to be have been broken :). You know it has been miserably hot down here when 92-94 feels like a cooldown !

Still having a ball with my boys & only have 2 more weeks with them. Taking some more time off with the boys, this week & next :)...

Have a great start to the week Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Please excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "hoping for an upsell?" And what do you mean by "now all we need is for cabins to become available on the TA also???

An upsell is a discounted upgrade. They do this to make lower priced cabins available to fill the ship.
As to the cabins, we are doing a B2B with the TA. We don't really want to be moving cabins between cruises. So, we probably won't take an upsell if we can't get the same cabin on the TA.

We've never been offered one of these. How does this happen-do you call them or do they call you. Heck I'm really happy with my aft balcony which was booked on the Liberty back before they made it an 8G rather than an 8C:D. Just wanted to know.

They call you. We have been offered these a few times, but it was to move up to a suite. That was too much for just the two of us. We would like to move to an Oceanview this time if it is possible.

We got such a good price when we were moved from the Freedom to the Liberty to the Dream that it is going to be hard to get a reasonable upgrade this time. We paid less than half of the going rate of an Oceanview for our interior rooms. Maybe we will get luck, but i kind of doubt it.

Ethel and I may be interested in doing the tour on 10/15. Let me know the cost etc. What time do you arrive at FCO?

Also thinking about joining up with a tour of the Amalfi coast. Anyone have room for two? Please post costs, details, etc. We may cancel using the train and opt for a tour.

Thanks

Hi. It looks like the two of you got into this thread late like we did. We are still finalizing our hotel and airline tickets. Just as soon as we get that out of the way, we will have to pull together our port activities and transfers from airport to the hotel in Civitiveccha, a transfer from the ship to Rome afterwards, and then from the hotel in Rome to the airport on October 31. We would probably be interested in an Amalfi coast tour from Naples with you. I plan to contact Papillion Tours again to see what we can get at Livorno for a drive through Tuscany into Florence. We saw the Pisa last time, so are not interested in taking time for a stop there.

Hi everyone just stole this from the Oct. 3rd sailing. Has some great video's. Terry and Tom, Joe and I are still planning on taking the train , or hiring a shuttle to Florence on the 13th. If we do a shuttle, it would be more cost effective to have more people. We still haven't decided which way we'll go. Anyone interested?

Gail, We just changed our flight to arrive in Rome a day earlier on the 12th, so we won't be on your flight from Heathrow to Rome. But, we'll meet you at the meet and greet hopefully!

Hope everyone had a great Weekend!

Denise

Denise, Ray and used Pappillion tours in Florence last time and loved it. I looked it up this weekend and it was 480euros for 6 of us in a nice A/C minivan with driver/guide for the entire day. It may have increased since May 2007, but I will try to look into this today. We might be able to put together a small group for this if you are interested.

Nancy

We decided against going to Maranello. For the price, it just isn't worth it as we'd spend most of the time traveling, and we'd really be cramped for time when we finally did get to the museum. Your husband should be pleased to know that the Brazilian Grand Prix will be broadcast live on the ship (I assume both qualifying and the race)!

Denise - Thanks for the video information. I haven't had a chance to watch all of them yet, but they look great.

dbutler5 - The ceremonies sound exciting, but will they cut into your port time?

Nick - Thank you for the gladiator info. I really appreciate it. It's just one of those silly things I want to do.

Diane - Sounds like a party on the train from Naples!

Marty - I'm glad you are having so much fun with your boys this summer. Can't wait to see pics. I thought the Buza meeting time was 4:00 pm? We will have to leave to go back to the ship a little before 6:00 pm, won't we?

The ceremonies mostly involve ships personell. The only thing that may effect port time is that it is the first time for this ship to call there and there may be extra things for it to do.

My TA just sent me this:
Carnival Introduces FunHub On The Carnival Dream
Fun Hub is a new interactive technology featuring an onboard social network, information on the ship's services, facilities and daily activities. The Dream will be Carnival's largest ship to date and will be put in service September 21. Access to the FunHub will be available via 36 computer stations located on decks 3, 4 and 5, including 12 within Ocean Plaza, Carnival Dream's indoor/outdoor café and entertainment venue. Guests will also access the sites via their personal laptops or via 10-inch netbooks which are available for rent and can be used anywhere on board. The on-board social network will allow guests to create a personal profile and use the application to meet and interact with others on board, send and receive private messages, create groups based on interests, and invite friends to attend shows or participate in on-board events. Guests can also create their own private or public discussion group, inviting others in their traveling party or friends they meet on board to participate. The portal also includes weather updates for that day and the next port of call; the latest news and sports scores; biographies of key shipboard personnel; ship and cruise director announcements; interactive polls; helpful three-dimensional ship maps, and a frequently asked questions section. Cell phone service, along with bow-to-stern wireless access where guests can check e-mail and surf the Web from any shipboard location, including their staterooms, will be available, as well.

Grammytan - thanks for the temps. All I have to say is "aahhhh" (see my previous post).

Oceanview585 - yes, saw that on the CC main page link. Looks like our ship will be pioneering in the IT area, with this "FunHub" thing. Jeanne may want to consider bringing her laptop...

Janis & Dick - I think you're right; I don't have the ship departure time in front of me, but I'm sure we don't want to cut it too close. Did we say 4pm-5pm? Anyway, need time for the Songo Thongo to dry after that dip in the Adriatic. Nevermind, not much material to dry :o...

Vickie & Gordie, Sharon & Jess, Elaine & Kathy - thanks for your replies & confirmations on the Amalfi/Pompeii tour. I will let you know what I hear back from the tour operator.

All- read on John Heald's blog that we pass an active volcano when we leave Messina (on the port side of the ship). He said that sometimes you can see the actual lava flow, but if not, you see the smoldering. Very cool, errrr, hot (since it is a volcano :p). Can't remember the name of it .

Vickie & Gordie, Janis & Dick - thanks, yes, been very busy. Unfortunately, makes time seem to pass faster! Although that is good for this cruise, it makes it sooner the boys go back to SD. Bittersweet. Thanks for your kind comments. I'll get some pics posted, as soon as I get my computer back.

Hope everyone's week is off to a great start!

I think driving time from Rome to Florence is about 3 hours, where as rail is under 2 hours if you take high speed trains. You very welcome to join us if we take the train! Or, if we go with the shuttle, that would be great to have you guys too.

We are doing 4 days in Rome prior to the cruise as well and have been looking for people to share the cost of transfer to the port on Oct. 15. We are staying at the Cosmopolita Hotel (which I believe is not far from the Spanish Steps area). I had a friend who did a similar cruise in May and the company that did the transfer to the port picked up everyone at different hotels so I don't think this should be a problem. And I believe we are not far from each other either.

I've been talking to Stefano with Rome Tours. He's arranged for airport pickup (around 8 am on 10/15), an ancient Rome tour (Vatican tour will be post-cruise), and cruise terminal drop off. His prices seem very resonable. Of course we could customize it to suit what we wanted to see. Judy (jebl39) has said she would like to be included on this tour. Anyone else? email me @ etexbeachbum@yahoo.com.

Here is Stefano's price:
Airport pick up will be 45 Euros touring will be 50 Euros per hour and transfer to the ship will be 130Euros(for two)I think you will need 4 hours to tour ancient Rome.

Here is Stefano's tour:

You may want to re-think trying to do both Capri and Pompeii. I don't think there is enough time. There are some good discussions regarding this on the CC boards if you do a search.

We saw Pompeii and Amalfi, Ravello etc... last year. This year, I think we are going to just go to Capri and then back to Naples to try and find Pizza Michelle!!!!

We will be arriving into Rome on October 14 at 10:30 am (FCO) and have reservations at Civitavechia at the Hotel Bramante. I need to make an arrangement for transportation to that hotel and am looking for someone to share the ride and cost if anyone has similar arrangements. BTW we will flying out of Philladelphia US Air #718 in case any of you are on the same flight.

Post cruise, I need to arrange a transfer (probably Stefano again) from the port into Rome. Again a transfer from Rome to FCO on October 31. Our flight is scheduled at 10:30 am, so we probably need to be there around 8:30, leaving the hotel around 7:30 am.

We should be at the airport the same time as you. We are from Poncahtoula, La, and they are from Slidell we should be going to the airport with them. To bad you could not get the Hotel Traiano it would really work out with the shuttle to the hotel. We have a suite the sleeps 4 at the hotel. If we meet up at the airport we might be able to make arrangements for dinner in Civi. As far as tours we have them booked through Carnival.

Here is a site with DST date from around the world. It looks like Italy will change October 25th.

Thanks for the info!
Wouldn't want anyone missing a flight or the ship..I'll make a note of that.

Can you find out the name of the company that picks people up at different hotels? That would be great! What time did you plan on arriving at the port? We would like to share the costs for the transfer with you. Maybe we can find more people to share the ride as well.

Ray and Jeanette,
I think most of the car services will pick up at different hotels. They do charge more for the extra stops. I'm not sure if there are shuttles that will make various stops. We have Rome Cabs booked for a transfer and a stop at Lake Bracciano, but our van is full already.

We also used Stefano at Rome tours last time and they picked us up and one hotel and the other couple at another hotel. Of course the hotels would have to be pretty close to allow for this. We did the same from the ship to the airport and then a hotel as there were 3 couples sharing this ride.

Good morning everyone on Hump Day. I don't know what is going on with our weather here on the gulf coast, but June was hot as blazes, making us wonder how we would survive July and August. The past several days have been so nice, cool dry mornings with a little breeze and very comfortable evenings. It reminds me of an early fall day. I will enjoy it while I can, since I know that it is only temporary.

My sis sent me an e-mail this morning about the Carnival Funship Times. There is a story there about a 75 year old man who has done 41 Cruises on 23 ships over the last 18 months. He retired and sold all of his possessions and wanted to live on his retirement and social security with no fixed expenses for home upkeep. He says he walks three miles a day, eats breakfast and dinner in the dining room to meet people and make friends. Some of his new friends have invited him to spend time in their homes. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Here I go again:)

Sorry to be going on and on this morning, but we have so much to take care of in such a short time. We cannot wait until October. Ray tells me at least once a day "did I tell you that I am taking you back to Italy for your birthday?"

Ed (eekconway) I am also sending you an email this morning. Ray and I discussed the Florence tour last night and we would love to join your group for this tour if it is still available.
Judy Have you put anything together yet for a small group to take the Amalfi Tour from Naples. We are definately interested in doing this tour.
Venice The last time we went, a group of us chartered a boat to go to Murano and Burrano for approx $20 euro each. We don't care to go back to the glass factory in Murano but really want to go back to Burrano for a few hours. We looked up info on line (I can post the site if anyone is interested) and think we will catch a Vaperetto near the ship on the first afternoon in Venice and go over to the little island of the brightly colored painted houses. The little village of shops and cafes there is so nice. We will hit Venice the next morning, and possibly the first evening.
Barcelona Last time in Barcelona, we didn't make plans and just hit the HOHO bus and it was kind of a bust for us. We checked out a couple of the Carnival excursions and were interested in Highlights and Shopping with possibly the Hard Rock Cafe. These excursions run $56 - $66 and we are not really interested in the stadium. So, we think we will duplicate parts of these on our own. We can take the HOHO bus and/or taxis to reach the major points, Catalunya Square, Safrada Familia Church, Gothic Area and Las Ramblas area to shop and have lunch at Hard Rock or one of the other cafes.
Messina Our goal is to make our way back to Taormina for the day. We can see Mt Etna from this little village on a high hill and really enjoyed our day there last time. I think I saw where some of you were taking a train to Taormina. Could someone update me on those arrangements please? We chartered a bus and took the same tour that Carnival does for $75 and we only paid $20 each. We had started out with a train group, but it grew so large that we found it was better to charter the bus. I think I have the bus info on file if anyone is interested in doing that.

I have a quote from one company for 550.00 euro. for 6 and another for 500 for 6. We need to have six at least to make this affordable for us. Is there anyone else interested? This tour goes to Positano, Amalfi, Ravello then Pompeii.

Also, anyone arriving at FCO on the morning of the 15th interested in sharing a ride to the port. I have one reserved for us but would be less expensive if we could share with someone.

Ray & Jeanette,
I will check the email, looking forward to you joining us for Livorno excursion. We're also going to go to Taormina & think it would be great to see about chartering a bus, I read on some of the posts that its a bit of an uphill walk from the train station to the main part of taormina. How many people would we need to make it work?

We went by Stromboli last year about 10am. It was belching black smoke but no lava. We really enjoyed it and took lots of pictures.
As I have said before, last year we spent the entire day at Pompeii and never made it to Sorrento. It depends how much you like roman ruins but there is a lot to see in Pompeii. It is much bigger than I imagined.
If anyone wants to take the train to Civ. we will be leaving around 2 pm.

Re Venice. Would also be interested in the chartered boat to Burrano, also don't want to see the glass blowing again.
Re Barcelona.
The ship shuttle bus drops you off near the foot of Las Ramblas and if you walk up to the top of Las Ramblas to Place Catalunya you can pick up the local bus to take you to Parc Guell which is so unique. This drops you at the entrance to the park wheras the HOHO drops you off at the bottom of the hill, or of course you can take a taxi. Last year my daughter and I walked from there to Sagrida Family and then walked back to las Ramblas stopping for lunch and coffee breaks on the way. After Rome you will be used to walking, but of course you can take a bus back. There is a tourist information booth at Place Catalunya which will help you with your plans and bus numbers.

The Taormina bus was booked through Blue Stone Tourism in Venice. The motorboat was booked in Venice to pick us up at right in front of the ship. It was booked through Bucintoro Viaggi. They also book gondola rides. I have asked for a quote on groups for the gondola ride and the boat trip to Burrano (without Murano). I asked them to quote me for a group of 6 - 8 and a group of 30 - 40 in case anyone wants to participate in this. I did the same with Blue Stone in regards to the bus to Taormina. With the time differences, I may not hear back from them today, but will post what I find here.

Anyway, just goy back from Schlitterbahn Galveston. A lot less crowded than the Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Good time was had by all. Weather was very nice on Galveston Island, not too hot and a very nice breeze blowing!

Take care Sogno, Sogno, Sogno and I'll check back this weekend!

This message is for mortimer49 and guiltgal24. Received an e-mail from Stefano from Rome Cabs. The cost for 8 people is $210E and he will pick up all up at our 3 different hotels. Because this will be a full van if 8 go there is a restriction of 1 suitcase and 1 carry on per person. His suggestion for pick up times is either 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m to avoid traffic. Please let me know if your interested and I will book the transfer. We have to pay in cash upon arrival at the port.

Does anyone know what time we will be able to get on the ship?? I would prefer to leave at 11:00 if we are able to get on the ship when we arrive. I figure by time Stefano picks us all up and we arrive it may be around 1:00 p.m. What are your thoughts??? Plus we will all probably have to check out of hotels by 11 - 12 in the morning.

Terry,
Hope you have a wonderful time on your cruise.

RE: Borghese Gallery is so gorgeous. I liked it 100 times more than the Vatican. They only allow 250 people in every 2 hours so it's not crowded and you can actually get within a foot or two of unbelievable Bernini sculptures. Be warned though, you cannot take anything inside the museum. They have a bag check area and you must check everything. No photography allowed inside. Still, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Your note on not being able to take anything into the gallery reminded me that the same applied when we wanted to get into the Casino in Monte Carlo. I did not want to check my personal items and camera so we did not go in. Just wanted to pass that along for anyone with plans to go into the Monte Carlo Casino. Jill- Do you know how to get tickets for the Borghese Gallery? We are thinking of doing that this time. Diane

Actually, we will use our Roma Pass to get into this museum. If you are going to be in Rome for more than one day, it's very economical. It includes entrance to 2 museums or sites (not the Vatican though) and discounts at other places. Plus, free use of the Metro and busses for 3 days after first use. Just google Roma Pass for more info. We had one last year and it was great.

You should make reservations to the Borghese no matter what sort of ticket you get. The owner of the B&B where we are staying post cruise is making reservations for us--He said they take them about 2 months prior. He did this same thing for Jeff and I last year.

I do have other information on the Borghese at home--I'll try and remember to look tonight.

Thanks Jill. We used the Rome pass last year and I agree it is very economical. However I see this year that it has gone up from 20 to 25 Euros and we are only in Rome a day and a half on either side of the cruise so I don't think it will work for us this time. Also we want to do some things outside Rome this time since this is our third visit. We plan to do Villa Adrianne and Ostia Antica on our full days in Rome.
For those of you who are staying for at least 2 days though the Rome pass is great and saves you standing in line at the popular attractions.

Still haven't nailed down our hotel for Rome (4 nights post cruise) and open to suggestions. We stayed in Via Veneto at the Ambasiciatorri Palace since our TA booked us there last time but, while we liked the area, we are hoping to save a little cash on rooms this time. We would particularly appreciate suggestions from those of you who have already stayed in Rome, not only on the hotels, but the areas (pros and cons). We don't like to use the train system and don't mind taxis or the bus system. Anyone have any strong feelings regarding the Vatican area, Trastevere, Colleseum area, etc.? Ray really wants to stay somewhere with a good breakfast included and I was a little worried about the Trastavere area and thought the Vatican area might be a little remote for us, since we probably won't visit the Museum again this time.

The stock sharehold OBC is like this;
Cruise 6 days or less $50/cabin
7-13 $100/cabin
41+ $250/cabin

You must own at least 100 shares, more doesn't gain you anything as far as the cruise is concerned. You cannot both own 100 and get double unless you book seperate cabins.

We bought our 100 in June and with the B2B are getting $350 OBC between the two cruises. Also the stock is up about $6 as of this message.

I hope this helps.

One more thing, you can use it on as many cruises as you like.

We stayed at a B&B last year outside the city walls but only 3 metro stops from the Termini. There are plenty of busses that leave from the piazza outside the place and go into Rome central. We used the metro though as it was very convenient for us. The rates are only 85 euros a night. They are highly rated on trip advisor and I would recommend the place to anyone. B&B Bologna. We are staying there 2 nights post cruise this year.

This year we rented an apartment in Trastevere. There are tons of good recommendations on Slow Travel for places to rent from. We got our apartment for 89 euros a night and you don't have to rent a full week. The downside is no breakfast included.. you have to make your own.. but they do have a kitchen so we will go to the market and stock our fridge.
Here is the link to the apartment:

Grammytan- thanks for the sympathy I also get freaked out if I have no cruise planned. As to the shareholder thing- If you own 100 shares in Carnival you get an onboard credit for every cruise. The nice thing about Carnival is that you get it for all their brands so we will be able to get a credit for our Princess cruise also. 7-14 day cruises get $100. We bought the stock last February while prices were low so we have made a profit and used the shareholder benefit. It is a nice little bonus and the credit is good at least through next July. Info is available on their web site.
We are staying in a convent in Rome. It is clean and they have a roll and coffee for breakfast. It is right by the Spanish steps and is a good deal if you don't mind twin beds and a 10:30 curfew.

GRAMMYTAN
July 23rd, 2009, 02:30 PM
I don't know if Ray would go for the convent and the curfew, although I only remember being out late one night last time we went to Rome. I will check on the B&B though. I am being a little lazy or overwhelmed on my research right now, but I think I remember reading something about the drivers fees being more expensive outside the city walls. I will have to look at that as well before I book. I am definately going to look into the shares though. I feel like I should own some, just from all the cruises we have done on Carnival. This is number 16 for us, but I have paid for an additional 21 cruise fares by taking our kids and grandkids on two family cruises. You would think Carnival would give me a couple of shares by now:)

What about some good restaurants in Rome - any testimonies here?

This will be our 20th cruise and we just bought stock. They were not all on Carnival though. I feel like we should have bought a long time ago but better late than never I guess. At least we got a good price when we took the plunge.
We also bought Royal Caribbean but haven't used it yet.

Ray and Jeanette, I think I have a tour of the Amalfi coast. I emailed Giuseppe of Sorrento Top Car and got a price a little lower than all of the others.

I explained that we would dock at 7am but had to be back onboard no later 5PM. That allows for traffic delays, etc. Here is his description of the tour,
The trip I would like to propose you would beginn at 08.o0am
at Naples port.
I would wait for you at the gangway with a shopsign with
your name on.
At first we would get to Pompeji ( the ruins open at
09.00am)and you would have some time to visit it( about
2hours).
For your information: Into the ruins in Pompei
can guide only authorized arceologic guides.A Guide would
cost 100.00euro for 2hours, it is the best mode to see and
understand at most possible in the short time.If you are
interested in I could book one for you. But there is also
the possibility to find auricolar guiding or books outside
the ruins.
After Pompei we would drive to the famous Amalfi Coast with
stop at Positano (stop with free time
therer-it's really beautiful).
After Positano we would drive to Sorrento. On the way we
would
also have the possibility to have a really good lunch at a
nice restuarant overlooking Positano.
After visisted sorrento we would turn to Naples Port at
about
05.00pm.

If you are interested let me know at jebl39@msn.com and I will make the reservation. As with all of the other companies, we pay in cash in euos.

We can fit in one more couple if anyone is interested.

That works for us. Pick up at 11 am is good also. I'm sure we will have to check out by then anyway. I'm not sure what time we can get on the ship, but it has been around noon on other trips we have taken. Thanks for booking this. Let me know if you need anything from us.

I think you can get on about noon although cabins may not be ready until 1pm. After you have checked in you can go out again to pick up any supplies you need in Civitavechia. There is a supermarket about a 10 minute walk which is signposted.

Grammytan. Re restaurants

Tony and Dino's Hosteria is just wonderful. Via Leone 1V 60. Near the Vatican.
Just be seated and they will bring you water and wine and then plate after plate of delicious food. They do have a menu but it is best if they bring you what is freshly cooked that evening. Last year the total for 2 was about 54 euros. We had plates of antipasti and pasta and were too full for the meat or fish course but did manage 3 desserts between us. Can't wait to go back.

I have found the information on the tours in Venice and Taormina and have sent e-mails to see current rates and arrangements.

Chris and I would also be interested in the bus to Taormina. With all the replies there should be enough to fill a bus :)

Good morning everyone.

hartliem & group in transfer: just wanted to let you all know that Stefano picked us up at our hotel in North Rome (Via Veneto area on map) at ll:00 am, then picked up another couple at their hotel a few blocks over. We went straight to the ship and boarded immediately. There were already a lot of people on board and we did not stand in a line at all. On most ships here, the cabins are not usually ready until 1:00 or 2:00 but we went straight to our cabin when we boarded.

Luvcdays: Thank you. How would I go about posting a picture to the "official picture" website and how do I view those already posted?

maryanne2: Thanks for the tip on the restaurant. It sounds just like the one we went to for dinner on a tour. It was Papa Rex in near the Vatican.

Bus trip to Taormina and trip to Buranno: I am stuck right now, waiting for the lady who arranged the bus to get back in town to check her messages. I have not been able to find out any more about the trip to Buranno either. The ones that I have found include all three of the Islands. I did find info on how to take the Vaperetto to Buranno. If we are not able to book the boat, why don't a group of us plan to meet up and go together. We thought, if the vaparetto schedule works out, we would try to go the first afternoon in Venice then return to Venice for an evening stroll. That would allow us the next morning to explore Venice in the daylight, without being under pressure to get back to the ship from Buranno before sail time.

I mentioned this before, but the self appointed and much appreciated leader of our Cruise Critics group last time worked out some great spreadsheets for all of us. If anyone would be interested in this, you can provide as much or as little info as you want. One his sheets gave the first names of the passengers, their home state, e-mails, hotels, cabins. The other listed the tours and transfers that were set up and shared. That sheet showed who set up each tour/transfer and who was included in each one. It also showed prices for each one. If anyone wants to email me at GRAMMYTAN@aol.com for a sample copy of what he put together, I will send it to you (but will delete the e-mails due to privacy issues).

Buona Venerdi Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

O.K., I've caught my breath just catching up with all the posts! This thread is really "cooking with gas" now (unlike my computer). Glad everyone is firming up their lodging/tour plans. I'll be jumping back in full force next weekend, when my boys head back to SD.

Well, picked up my CPU from the Geek Squad and dropped it off at a "mom & pop" shop (Computer Avenue) that I've used before. Going to give a repair another shot. The guy at the shop asked me when it went down and when I told him, he said there were power surges around that time (could explain the motherboard getting fried). But, I have a surge protector . Anyway, we'll see what this quote will be...

I've managed to keep up with John Heald's blog and there have been daily pics and today there was another video of the Dream on her final seatrial (video taken from a helicopter). Wow, only about 8 weeks until she departs on her inaugural sailing . I bet there is a "beehive" of activity getting the interior of that ship finished...

Hi Denise,

My knee is doing much better. I never did get an MRI because it wasn't hurting that much. It only bothers me if I twist it too quickly and when I squat down, it feels really tight. I guess I won't be doing any break dancing on the dance floor! I think I'm just getting old! LOL Thanks for asking.

Yesterday I was wondering if Terry was having a good time on her cruise, then I remembered it hadn't started yet. I hope she has better weather on this cruise!

Mandy is really liking the weather in Lansing, especially compared to what they were having in Texas.

Yes, there are some great sales going on. I got bought 3 more pair of pants yesterday, so now I am done shopping. Almost all the clothes I am bringing are new. DH and I shopped this morning for him, but he did not find anything. He wants to wear shorts and t-shirts everyday and even for walking around at night. Is this what all the other guys are doing? I was going with the layering method, like a tank top with a pullover sweater (which can be tied around my neck) and then taking a light weight trench coat. DH thinks I am going to be too hot.

Does anyone having any suggestions?

Ciao Sogno, Sogno, Sogno!

Denise - thanks for the reminder! Still plenty of time to fashion coordinate the Songo Thongo; after all, not much material there to match :o...

Dave & Barb & Valentine, Robby & Charlotte, Sharon & Jess - thanks for posting your pics on *************.com! Good to see you and look forward to meeting you on the cruise! I like looking at *************, because as our cruise gets closer, we move up the list ...

Janis - thanks, yes still having a ball with the boys and still very busy! We were down in Galveston again today at Moody Gardens. It has 3 pyramids, with one being an aquarium, one a rain forest and the other a discovery exhibit. Also, they have a private beach called Palm Beach (they imported white sand from the Bahamas for the beach). Re the attire question; I plan on wearing the S.T. most of the time. On elegant nights, I'll add a bow tie :o.

JK... seriously, I think I'll try and bring a cross section for choices, e.g. nice shorts, polo shirts, t-shirts and then for evenings, khakis, slacks and a suit for elegant night(s). I know it will be challenging for packing...

All- I don't know if anyone noticed, but you can make reservations now at the Chef's Art (Carnival's "Steakhouse" or Supperclub). I've submitted a request for reservation for 2 nights at the Chef's Art. The first night will be to (hopefully) celebrate a special occasion ;)... Has anyone else made a reservation request for Chef's Art?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Arrivederci,

Marty & Jeanne

We are looking for 4 or 5 more people to join us on this shore excusion from Messina. If you are interested let me know ASAP so I can book it.

The company is Sicily Limos and comes recommended. This is the response from my email to the company...

Our tour will start by picking you up from your location, a english speaking driver will drive through a wonderful scenery with photo stops at the most beautiful locations in Taormina. You will have free walking time in the town about (2-3 hours) where you can admire the Greek Theatre from the 2nd century A.D. – Palazzo Corvaja , the most beautiful medieval building in town – Duomo di Taormina - the San Nicolò Cathedral square and Corso Umbero where you can do excellent shopping and than we will drive to Castelmola where you will have a fantastic view of the coast line.

Tour from Messina dock to Taormina and Castelmola 234 Euro (6-7 people) Ext. time 4-5 hours

Lindsey and I are interested. If we get others the price is very reasonable. We wanted to do Taormina and Castelmola sounds nice as well.
Thanks,
Jill

We have been trying to book a bus that possible the whole group would be interested in to go to Taormina but have not found one. This sounds good to us. We visited Taormina before but have no info on Castelmola. We always like to see something new on our trips, so please count us in on the tour.

Thanks
