View Full Version : Thoughts and Prayers Needed for HAL Board Regular Jim Hannah
LAFFNVEGAS
October 26th, 2008, 03:26 PM
Greetings to all my HAL Board CC friends I just want to let you all know that our friend Jim Hannah had a horrible accident yesterday. And he needs our thoughts and prayers.
This is what Donna his wife posted on FaceBook a place where several of us frequent, I sent well wishes their way and asked if it was OK to post on CC, I heard back from their daughter and she said most definitely more prayers the better.
Jim's Fall From the Attic
Saturday afternoon, Jim fell from the top of the opening into the attic. He fell to the concrete floor, landing on his left side. He did some pretty good damage, shattering his elbow and fracturing his pelvis, ribs, and tailbone.
He JUST got out of a 3-hour surgery on his elbow. They put in 3 plates and "about 500" screws to knit his elbow back together.
The surgery went well, thank God. There is much to pray for. Because of the injury to his left arm, he will not be able to use a walker, cane or crutch to support his fractured pelvis. Soon, the doctor will get him up to see if he can support himself on his right side. If not, he'll have to use a wheelchair for a while. Pray for his resolve to be strong and for his right side to support his body.
Many praises during our prayers: Jim didn't injure his head or neck. The garage door was open and a neighbor heard his calls for help. (I was at Wal-Mart when this happened.) His medical care has been wonderful thus far.
I will update more later. Pray when you think of Jim.
Love, Donna

That is terrible. I will certainly keep them in my prayers. I fell last week onto our concrete garage floor. I landed on my back, left side. I just fell about 3 feet and am still hurting so I can imagine how bad he is hurting right now. :(
Blessings to the family. And I pray for a quick recovery.

I have so much empathy for both Jim and Donna. My DH fell off our patio roof on to concrete also, a year ago July, broke his heel, his writs, elbow, and was wheelchair bound for 3 months, so I sort of know what their going through and what they will be going through for the monhs to come. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jim and Donna, I wish for a speedy and full recovery for Jim.
Thanks Lisa for passing on the news, appreciate it.

Thanks Lisa for informing all of us about Jim. I will pray for him and his family today as I also pray for Rev. Neal's Grandmother and his family. I read that Rev. Neal's Grandmother has 24 hour Hospice care now but Rev. Neal and his Mother have been staying with her for sometime.

Oh my, I just saw this post. My thoughts and prayers will be with both of them.
I suffered a similar accident a little over two years ago with several pelvic fractures and a broken right arm. The arm prevented using a walker even though I tried. I found that a wheelchair was the answer until I was strong enough to use a cane.

Sending prayers to Jim and his family. I hope that his injuries are not permanent and will heal in a few months.
My DH had a similar fall from a 2nd story onto concrete and broke both heels into several pieces. It put him out of commission for several months.
The wheelchair will get him around, but I know how hard it will be for Donna lifting it in and out of the truck of the car.

I'm one of Jim Hannah's daughters, and I just wanted to tell everyone that your expressions have been relayed to Dad. It was such a blessing to all of us to read what you wrote, and for those of you who haven't met him, I can assure you that he's as classy, insightful, and funny as he comes off in cyberspace. He was joking around with the hospital staff and visitors, even in a bit of a pain/pain-killer haze, and I know that his attitude will expedite his recovery.
He's not one to wallow, as evidenced by the year decades ago when his retina detatched on Thanksgiving day, rendering him completely blind in one eye. He knew he couldn't get in to see an eye doctor during the holiday weekend, so until Monday he never said a word to anyone about it! Last night, he was telling the E/R staff his pain level was, on a scale of 1-10, a 3, even though he probably had more messed up bits than not; and today after surgery, he was requesting more pain meds since his arm was "really bothering" him at a 5. :o
Anyway, thanks for the continued prayers. It's great to see such a supportive community, and we all really appreciate you.

So saddened to hear about Jim' accident. Concerning his need for support to walk, I am sure the PT department will recommend a hemi-walker. My Mom fell during her 3-mile walk 3 years ago and shattered her left arm and knee. She used the hemi-walker and it worked really well. I will continue to pray for Jim. If you have never had an ortho injury, you just don't know how painful they can be. Jim will certainly be needing a cruise to soak up some healing rays and I hear salt water is so theraputic....

Here is the latest update from Sarah Jim's daughter on her Facebook...
Dad is, this minute, snoring right here beside me in his hospital room. It's a sweet sound, I'm telling you, and one I'm hoping will last a few hours at least.
Dad had chest x-rays done today, but we haven't gotten word back on those yet. All seems well.
The physical therapist came today. With a lot of pain, he was able to sit up on his bed and put his feet down on the floor. He said he feels good as long as he's not moving. :)
The ortho surgeon said he should get full range of motion back in his left arm/elbow.
SO SO much to be thankful for. Thanks to the internet, there are hundreds of people praying for Dad all over the world. On a cruising forum he frequents, he got over 130 (at last count) messages of prayers and well-wishes from all of his forum buddies. Brought me to tears.
Thank YOU guys for praying, too. We know it makes all the difference. God IS good. Please also thank Him for all the work He's done so far:
-Dad is moving a lot more today than he did yesterday.
-Dad is sleeping more.
-Dad's resolve is strong.
-No "new" problems have cropped up.
-Dad sat upright at his bedside today.
-All the other blessings mentioned in past notes.
Continue, when you think of Dad, to pray for:
-high spirits/strong trust in God
-Mom
-mobility and consistent progress with PT and rehab
Love to you all and goodnight!! (And he's still sleepin'!)

Accidents suck ... believe me, I know. They are so unexpected and disrupt our plans abruptly.
But, I'm praying for you, Jim ... that you heal up nicely and get back on your feet in record time. And, if you need to use a wheelchair for a while, no big deal. Believe me, I know ... I was in one for three months.
Stay strong and know that everyone here on CC is lifting your name up in prayer to God.
Blue skies ... and see you back on the boards soon!

Here is tonights update from Sarah
It looks like Jim is doing quite well :)
And he's UP! There is so much to be thankful for today.
Last night, Hannah (my oldest daughter) went home with Mom so Mom could get a good rest in her own bed. I stayed the night with Dad.
Here's the good news:
-Dad's chest tube was removed. (Chest x-rays looked good.)
-During his OT, he had great range of motion in his right arm and made great strides in stretching and moving his left arm at the shoulder AND even his elbow.
-During 2 different PT sessions, Dad stood up and walked!! He side-stepped during his morning session, then walked (scooted with support...you understand) forward and backward during his afternoon session. It wore him out! The painful part for him was the rotating to get out of and into the bed.
-He's finally sleeping a LOT!
Hopefully, he will be able to move out of the hospital and into an in-patient rehab center VERY soon. The rehab place will be close to home (blessing for Mom) and they'll work with him 3-4 hours per day. It's going to be tough, but he knows that's the best way to heal.
CC HAL friends, I've kept Dad updated as to how many well-wishes are coming from you. He's been way too tired to even listen to me read your posts. I have a feeling he'll be back soon, though, typing one-handed. In the mean time, I put some cruise pictures up in his room and Mom is working on her best towel animal! :)
Facebook friends as well, thanks for adding Dad to your prayer lists and your thoughts. This is just plain NO FUN and the support from all of you makes a world of difference!
Love, Sarah

Love, Donna
Get well soon Jim, you are in our prayers.

Here is Jim's Daughter Sarah's Update from last night
*Yaawwwwn!!*
Okay, we weren't planning to go see Dad today, but when I was reminded last night that today was the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (we had reserved tix ages ago), THEN saw that DSO was 1 mile from Baylor, we just HAD to stop by. Ken actually spent a couple of hours there this morning while the kids and I went to see DSO, then we joined Ken and Nana for lunch. After lunch, we had a good visit with Dad.
He had two PT sessions today. During the first, he walked out into the hall and back. During the afternoon session, he walked out and down the hall a bit, then back. Understand, when I say "walk", he's shuffling along very slowly, using a walker, and with a PT on each side of him....But hey, he's up and moving around!!!
He said the pain is his hip (pelvic fracture) when he walks. As with yesterday, rotating to get in and out of bed is also painful due to the rib injuries.
The sessions are painful and wear him out, but they are good for him! His nurse was already talking "discharge" today! The inpatient rehab will be a lot of work for him, but this is truly a case of "no pain, no gain".
His IV was removed today, so now he only has the catheter, which he must keep for 2-3 weeks due to the urethra injury, and oxygen.
Pray for Dad's resolve to stay strong. He's doing SO WELL, but has a LONG road ahead. He'll have 3-4 hours of rehab per day, plus breathing and arm exercises he must do every hour. He may come out of this more buff than ever! :)
Thanks for your prayers. We KNOW they are not wasted. God is faithful.

John & I met Jim & his lovely Donna on Eurodam's inaugural this past July. Every night before late-seating dinner, our little gang would gather for drinkies in the Ocean Bar. But Jim & Donna, along with Bill S. & his beautiful Virginia, were tablemates for early-seating. Between dinner shifts those 2 couples would stop by to give their reviews of the meal. Jim would always have a joke for us. And if the band was playing, Bill & Virginia would dance - like champions. :)
Lisa - Thanks for posting the updates. I've been reading them to John tonite (just found this thread :o ). Sounds like Jim's medical team is taking really good care of him. And that he is participating fully in getting back to 100%.
Best wishes Jim, for a speedy recovery. And hugs to Donna & the rest of the family.

Here is tonights' Update from Sarah and also an address for cards you may like to send to Jim :)
I think Jim would have liked to start getting back on CC but the rehab does not have WiFi :(
Here is Sarah's update...
More good news and thanks to report!
Dad was moved to an inpatient rehab hospital today in McKinney, just minutes away from Mom and Dad's house. Baylor Medical it's not, but it's a nice place.
Draco Malfoy, Superman, Wonderwoman, and a giant Candy Corn visited Dad in his new room. Laura and I took the kids, all decked out in their Halloween attire, to visit "Pappy". He was dressed up as an invalid in a hospital. He really went over the top with the costume this year.
Dad was watching TV (he's been too tired to even do that up until this point) and was certainly more alert than he's been thus far.
Dad will be working on rehab for 3 hours in the mornings and 2 hours in the afternoons. He's ready for the hard work ahead.
I hope Mom will post a picture she took of Dad walking down the hall today. He's flanked by PTs and is using a walker, but he's moving!! (And don't worry, she made sure his hospital gown was fastened!) :)
Right now, we're THANKING God for all of this good news. We're also continuing to pray for his spirits and resolve to stay strong as he has hard work ahead. We are praying that Mom and Dad both continue to lean in on the Lord when stress crops up about the mounting medical bills, monotony of being in a "facility", when Dad grows weary of having to work so hard to do simple tasks, or just when they are missing their "normal" lives.
Some of you wanted his address:
Jim Hannah
c/o Medical Center of McKinney, Wysong Campus
130 S Central Expy
4th Floor, Rm. 425
McKinney, TX 75070
We don't take your prayers for granted. Dad knows you are praying for him. Mom, too. Sadly, this rehab hospital has NO Wi-Fi (Oh, the humanity!!!!), so he won't be able to get back online until he's home. In the meantime, he feels the love! And you're welcome to send a card. (A what?) :) He enjoyed reading several that he got today.

Good to hear Jim is progressing. Thanks for the updates.
Staff at the Medical Center will be stunned by the number of cards one patient, Jim Hannah, receives. Hope it gives him a lift.
Jim and Donna and family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Here is an update from Jim's Daughter Sarah for Friday....
Dad's first full day at the rehab hospital:
9:00- Got up and took a bath (with help from one nurse)
Dressed himself using a "gripper"
10:00- Got into wheelchair and moved himself into PT room.
Worked out until 11:30, then went back to his room.
11:40- OT came and taught Dad more exercises.
Noon- Ate lunch
After lunch, he was WORN OUT!
He did a LOT of work during his session. Mom was there with him all morning, then again this evening. He's ready for a FULL night's sleep.
Prayers:
*Dad sleep well tonight, and through the night without interruption.
*His headache will subside without having to continue medication for it.
*That Dad will remember to do his breathing exercises every hour!!
*That if/when it "hits" Dad that he's gone through all of this, his spirits and resolve will stay high.
*That Dad will REMAIN motivated to workout!
Please thank God for ALL of the amazing strides Dad has made. If you aren't sure that God has anything to do with it or not, just thank Him on behalf of us.

Well done Jim!!!!!!!! I know it is not easy to dress oneself using a "gripper"; and then having a bath and then one and one half hours of exercises and more to try from physio. You are not an ordinary mortal; you are a SUPERMAN.
I wish for continued success with your rehab. and a cruise looks close already.

You`re getting that second wind now.

Here is Sarah's update from Saturday :)
Saturday Update
I got to watch Dad work during his rehab today. He's certainly the most "lively" of the bunch. He just doesn't seem to fit in...He's much younger and...well...awake. :)
The PT was shocked at the range of motion he has in his left arm.
Dad got up and, using only a cane for support, walked (slowly) from rehab to his room. It was quite a distance!! I was impressed that he did this AFTER he was already sweating from his rehab session.
Look for him to be online tomorrow. We spotted what seemed to be a patient computer with internet access. To those of us who understand how getting online can make you feel normal again, we can add to our prayers that Dad gets to use the computer!!
I'll make this a short update tonight. Maybe you'll hear from *him* tomorrow night!
Pray for:
good night's sleep. (He slept 5 hours straight last night, with the aid of meds.)
high spirits.
continued recovery
I can't update without mention of God's goodness and mercy though this yucky time.
Good night!

If someone in Jim's family has a laptop, I **think** they can save this thread to the hard drive and pull it up "working offline" for Jim to read (wouldn't need an iternet connection at the Rehab place). Just a suggestion.
Keep up the good/hard work, Jim. Still in my thoughts!

Oh dear. I've just logged in after an absence of several weeks and was so distressed to hear this news about our good friend, Jim. DM and I had the pleasure of being tablemates with Jim and Donna on our Western Med cruise in 2006.
Jim, our prayers will be with you through your recovery. You are such a fine gentleman, and have such a wonderful attitude toward life, I know you will be cruising again very soon.
Warmest best wishes to you and Donna.

You don't need an internet connection ... just a phone line with a dial up link. Many DSL and other high speed internet providers offer a dial up number as an alternative if the DSL or cable modem goes down. Just use that dial up to link to the internet. It'll be slower, but it will work.
When I was recovering from my accident, that's exactly how I did it. A friend got me a laptop and let me use her AOL account to get online.
My prayers are with you, Jim. Sounds like you're making some incredible progress. Keep up the good work. Believe me, it will pay off. I know that about which I speak.
Blue skies and can't wait to see you back online ...

Hello, everyone, from Rehab.
I have just now been able to read this thread, saved from online since I don’t have connectivity here.
WOW! That’s about all I can say. I am both overwhelmed and humbled by your well wishes and prayers. It’s very helpful.
Today, Election Day, was very busy and tiresome. But I am beginning to see some incremental progress. Baby steps are fine for now!
“Thank you” seems to be so empty. But I truly DO thank you for your thoughts and prayers. This is such a great community of people! I’ll post again in a few says, I’m sure.
I need a cruise!

Thrilled you are doing better! Keep mucking through, it is really hard work but it will make you whole and possibly stronger in the long run (I have 2 PTs as sisters and 2 daughters to go through this with gymnastics injuries). Just know the pain will pass and you will feel better! Our personal prayers and those of all on the board are with you so you know all will be well!
God bless you!
