Might do - we're also looking at BL0912 but waiting for a price drop to be honest. Hoping to get a kids go for £99 deal like I did last year as daughter wants to take a friend with her.

We are also looking at this one and waiting for the price to drop. We had a good deallast summer too.
Bit upset the 'family friendly' has been dropped and there is only a note that if there enough children will they run a childs host. How will we know?
What adult price did you get with the £99 child last year and what company did you use to book through?
Wondering what the baltic itinerary will be like with the children.

Hi Cruiser M,
Yes, seen that! Thanks for alerting me. We are OK with the price on that deal - just £100 more than last year (worth it because we know in advance we are going and can plan) but we invited family (assuming they would want an inside on a deal like us) and they want a balcony! They have all gone now and only suites available - waiting for them to make a decision as there's will obviously be ££££££. Mind you they should have known that when they asked for the posh decks over steerage!
I don't regret asking because we dearly love them to join us as we don't get much time together in real life and the meals and pomp and circumstance would all be rather special to us and the children, but it looks like we will have to wait for their decision.

Hello All
I booked last Thursday on this cruise, been on a Freddie cruise before and loved it! We were not supposed to be going on a cruise this year as we went on Ventura at Xmas & NY 08/09 (not good!) so really spent enough - However, they keep sending the info and once I got a quote the TA talked me into it, telling me how the Baltics is a fantastic experience etc. The only downside is that to make it affordable we are all in an inside cabin - myself my husband daughter 17 and son 15! I need to be organized!! I booked late sitting for dinner so I can get myself ready then go for pre-dinner drink(s!) whilst the rest of them get ready - clever ehh?
It will be great to be back on a smaller friendly ship, I am really looking forward to it.
Bye for now, Fiona x

Hi Fiona.
Nice to have you aboard, yes your T/A was correct in telling you that a Baltic cruise is a wonderful experience, we have been before and its an area not to be missed. We too, have booked on second sitting, hopefully in the Spey.
We do hope that this thread becomes a little more active, as you can see its been very quiet so far.
If we can be of any help in answering any questions, please don't hesitate in contacting us.
I am retired and I worked in the tyre business for 39 years and live in West Kent, although my wife Dianne still goes off every morning, she tells me that it helps to keep me in a lifestyle to which I have become accustom and it helps to keep, F/Olsen and Princess Cruises in business.
We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on this cruise, so hopefully it will be a good one. My wife Dianne is still an Australian citizen,
and proud to be so, although she has resided in the UK for 25 yrs.
Great to hear from you and hopefully a few others will join us soon.
Regards for now.

Hi Mick
Thanks for welcoming me to the thread, I see you are a very experienced cruiser. I shall no doubt have plenty of questions before we sail so thanks for offering to help!
We live in Derby - born & bred! Andy my husband has been working in Aberdeen since Christmas, so we don't see enough of him at the moment - mostly every other weekend. He's an engineer. I work for Lakeland (kitchenware) and absolutely love everything about it! I must stop buying the gadgets!! Our Daughter Marie is at 6th form doing her 'AS' levels and our son Andrew is doing his GCSE's, so they need a holiday as they are under a lot of pressure. We need to spend time together as a family too.
I am sure the Baltic cruise will be very intersting, in the past people we have met on cruises have told us that it was their favourite. We went on Black Watch Summer 06' and we met such great people, I preferred the smaller ship atmosphere. I enjoyed Oceana but did not like Ventura. Too big, too busy, too holiday campish!
We have booked a guest house in Dover for the Saturday night. It will be nice to sail from the UK again after 2 fly cruise holidays.
Did you specify which restaurant you preferred or are you just hoping to get lucky? The TA just asked us which sitting we would like. Also, what can you tell me about Balmoral? Did you really enjoy your last cruise on her? I would love to hear any information at all. I am getting excited already!
Look forward to talking more, say hello to Dianne from me :)

Hi Fiona.
Gee you found our reply real quick, as I did not realise that it had even been sent, due to a hitch or an ID IO T error on the lap top.
As I had a few questions regarding this cruise, I asked the T/A to check them out with Olsen's, including the restaurant request They came back to me and YES they have given us our specified restaurant. The Spey restaurant is at the top of the ship on port side, with lovely ocean views and there are some really nice and experienced waiters in this dining room.
The Balmoral is totally different to their other ships. Some of the cabins are not as well laid out as they could be. It's rather a smart and pretty ship internally, with plenty of nice quiet lounges. Deck space and loungers were plentiful, especially at the rear of the vessel - saying this we very rarely cruise in the school holidays, when there are children in abundance. It has a nice theatre, quite a large pub which is spoilt rather, by having a walk way through the middle of it. The Observatory, host's the pianist and later in the evening the night club. We found the main restaurant rather noisey (at breakfast) and the staff weren't as pleasant as one would have liked. We enjoyed our last cruise on her, even though they were still sorting out teething problems, in fact we booked this one whilst on board -April/May 08. As we were fairly confident that the wrinkles would be sorted out by August 09. We found the food to be very good and if there was a problem, it was sorted on the spot. I am a rather bad Diabetic, with other problems and I am on low fat diets, so some of the buffets did not agree with us and I found eating in the restaurant was generally a better option.
Looking at the ports of call, tour excursions are a must in St Petersburg, as the ship docks way out of town in a commercial dock in a forest. I am informed that there are no taxi cabs available and a walk into town takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours. But there are some delightful places to visit on the tours.
The other ports of call, can be done easily on your own. We can give you further details nearer the time. Please feel free to ask us questions, as we are pleased to share information with all.
Lovely to hear from you

Hi Mike
Thanks for replying, I was only quick as it's my day off!
The Spey sounds lovely, I have just received confirmation of table for 4 at 20:30hrs. I feel cheeky asking to have a table in the Spey Restaurant but I do like the sound of that one.
I know we need to do Fred Olsens excursions in St Petersburg because of the visas. The kids want to do the evening at the ballet to see Swan Lake, have you done that before? If not what do you recommend as 'must do's?' Both our kids are very interseted in music & dance.
There is plenty of time to ask your advice on ports, I'll probably go through them one by one if you don't mind!
Thanks so much for your help,

Fiona, there is nothing cheeky about asking for the Spey; it is available to everyone, on a first booked first served basis. The only negative comments we heard about the food on Balmoral came from those dining in the main restaurant, where I gather it was sometimes luke-warm - the Spey, being smaller, did not have this problem. It's a lovely room, and I hope you enjoy it.

Hello again Fiona.
Yes we have attended the ballet, although they seemed to do a split evening, between ballet and opera then. One word of advice though, take a thick towel from the ship in a bag or a blow up cushion ring with you, as the seats are small and very hard. Wether you will see "Swan Lake" is another thing, as they alternate with "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker". On our last visit here, we went on 5 excursions in 2 days, to say the least we were cream crackered by the time the ship sailed. We took excursions to the Hermitage, Catherine Palace, Petrdvorts/Peterhof, the evening at the Ballet and Opera and a city tour.
Another tour that I am told is a wonderful experience, is a musical evening at the Hermitage. It gives you the chance to tour the museum with out the crowds and also enjoy a short concert, but it does come at a premium price!
Ref your interest regarding the ship, I have some photos of the interior & lounges. As I'm not clever enough to place them on this site, if you E mail me on mickeycruising@yahoo.co.uk, I'll return them by attachment to you.
In and aroud Dover
If you find that you need some new clothes or just need to kill an hour whilst in Dover, there is an outlet centre to the rear of the Churchill Hotel(on the sea front), which is all under cover. Also if you have the time there is a lovely Castle which overlooks the town, that one can visit and another attraction is the White Cliffs Experience, or one can catch a ferry to France for the evening or just go for a dinner trip, as a non landing passenger.
As for requesting the Spey, don't be sheepish about asking. Olsen's are normally very accommodating to requests, after all, its first come first served and doesn't mean anything to them. Also its making a client happy. So go for it Fiona.
Will speak soon

Thanks again, it all sounds wonderful! You can email me the pictures at fiona.bould@ntlworld.com, we only have 1 PC and daughter is hurrying me up as she need to use it as usual! I rang TA whilst on my break at work today re: Spey, they were happy to take the request but told me they cannot promise anything which is fair enough. Thanks again for all this advice. Got to go now, I'll be back soon.

Well, the man from Del Monte says yes! I shall be ringing first thing tomorrow with our cabin choices from the list we were given and - if they can honour the price quoted today - we will be joining you.
Is there any reason people are talking of the Spey restaurant and not mentioning the Avon?
I've no idea which to ask for! We were in Ballindalloch last time.

Hi Kez, nice to hear from you again and hopefully welcome aboard to both you and your family.
There is no particular reason why we are talking about the Spey, apart from a different decor, the Avon is a mirror image and I expect like the Spey, the staff are pleasant and helpful who work in there.
We made the request, as the guys there understand my dietary needs. Normally like you all, we just ask for the sitting and a table that suits, we prefer large tables of 6 or 8 persons.
Hope they can honour your choices and we see you on board in August.

Hi Kez.
Thank you, yes, we enjoyed our cruise on the Grand, lovely food, the entertainment kept us well awake. Service, although attentative, needed a little more polish in places! We had some excellant weather for the time of year and we enjoyed the private limo tours we arranged to Alhambra and Rome - great value. On top of this the ship was in great shape and we met some really nice people, which is always a bonus.
Back to your question of currency ~ after this last trip we found out that our money doesn't go far. Lunch in Europe was costing us around 30 - 40 euros p.person. The hydrofoil between Naples to Sorrento, last season was 7 euro e.way @ 1.43 euro ex rate, this year 11 euro e.way. With the Pound being on par to the euro nearly, it all suddenly became expensive.
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
We normally budget at £30-40 pp for each port, for incidentals in the local currencies, plus the C.Cards for larger purchases like lunch, hopper buses and entrance fees.
We have 1 stop in Denmark (D.Kroner) 1 in Sweden (S Kroner) and 3 in the euro zone. Russia, well US$ Dollars or maybe euros, if you spend anything at all. Take the excursions they are safer, more reliable and cost affective.
It depends on what you do. The Tivoli is a wonderful place for all ages, but it means a little more currency ~ they accept CC for the entrance fees.
Come back to me if you would like more info, always pleased to help.
We have our table for the second sitting dinner, in the corner of the Spey Restaurant sorted out hopefully.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
This thread has been very quiet and I'm sure that the cruise is well booked, so what are they all doing, or shouldn't I ask....!!!http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon4.gif

Yes, we have booked on the Balmoral, for the 7 day Classic Norway cruise on 28/6.
I cannot see you being in the bad books, as I am pretty sure the price won't drop too much more, on the Baltic trip. As you say, at least you are onboard. Any idea's, of what you will be doing when your in port. Reading Kez's comments they are starting to organising themselves. Good to hear from you kez.
Thank you, we would love to view your photo's.
I have booked on the 7 day Norway cruise on 28/6, aboard Balmoral, for Dianne's birthday and we are taking along, my 84 year young mum.
Did you go to Olden, whilst in Norway. If you have been, what excursion did you take? We remember it as a mooring at the end of the Nordfjord, with just a post office/gift shop as you exited the ship and a small village approx 3~4 km down the road!
Looking at the excursions - WOW, they have increased in price. As for Flam and Eidfjord, we have covered most of the excursions that are within our mobility range, have you any idea's of anything to do in these ports.
Glad to hear that you are organising your itinerary, we haven't thought too much about it to-date. I understand that they do a private tour with a concert, at the Hermitage. This could be of interest as we celebrate our Anniversary in St P/burg.
Have you been to Stockholm, as this is our first visit there.
Hope to hear from you soon

No, we didn't go to Olden. We did Alesund, Tromso, Bergen, Trondheim, Honninsvag, (and down at the Fjords) Geiranger and Eidfjord, then Bergen. All on the photos as well as cruising scenery.
Eidfjord we went for a walk up the road, went in the shop, and then back and into the pool on Highland Deck. I was in desparate need of a relaxing holiday last year (and it's looking similar this year!) so all we wanted to do was to take in the scenery and bimble - lots of excursions were not high on our order of priority. We love taking photos as does our son - so that is mainly what we did.
We are doing child friendly half day excursions in St P. Fountains of Peterhof by Hydrofoil one day and a general half day sightseeing the other day. The costs of the museums will be lost on the children as they would cost us x 4, it's a no brainer. Our Outlaws will no doubt do longer trips and possibly evening ones too.
I have added you as a friend - will I now be able to send you photos link in private?

Copenhagen - I have a danish friend who will be in C. for two weeks in June - she is going to create a walking itinerary for us. Stockhom - my husband has visted in the RN : we have our eye on things - the trams, the Vasa, the Dungergarten (sp?), the Ice Bar - but no firm itinerary. Tallin - walkabouts, developing where at moment. Helsinki - possibly the zoo, but still not sure. Travelmunde - supposed to be very similar to where we live here in UK so will be walking around so they can compare and contrast and taking children to beach if good weather. Entry to Kiel canal - I have worked out this should be gala night - so we'll stay up late and try and have a (well behaved) party on Outlaws balcony.

Good Morning, thanks for replying
We do really need to have a look at the excursions. I really don't know what to choose. Marie & Andrew want to do the really expensive one with the concert at the end but its so expensive when we have to pay for 4. I have read a little about some other tours linked to this site - when you click onto ports of call and the Europe, then St Petersburg, Alla, Viktoria, Red October etc. They all deal with Cruise Ship passengers and you can book a 2 day inclusive tour to cover everything and they sort the visa out. It may be the only option for us as it must be cheaper? We have tried this sort of thing in the Caribbean and have always been really pleased, but I'm just not sure. I will have to have a proper look. All of the other places we will have to do on our own, but your help would be very useful! What do you recommend, bearing in mind we are on a budget lol!
Thanks, Fiona x

Hi Fiona.
Looking at the St P/Burg tour information that you posted it, does seem very interesting.
As I understand things, the prices are per tour, so the more persons involved, the more cost affective it becomes. Are my thoughts correct?
If so it maybe worth combining our numbers - what are your thoughts?

We could certainly look into it, we would be more than willing to group up especially if it makes it more affordable. The more the merrier! If you can make sense of how it works let us know, meanwhile we will try to look further into it. Do you have a preferance as to which company, Alla is mentioned a lot, so is Desrus?? We are easy to please. If you decide to go ahead with the ships excursions after all it won't be a problem. Pleased don't feel obliged! Speak soon, Fiona & Andy x x

If the prices are around the $300 (£215) its not much more than doing 2 of the ships tours. Lets get some more info and decide what we want to do, as the days seem very long and I'm not sure of our departure time.
Dianne and I are certainly up for it and we generally fall in with most things and we are both easy to get along with. I've drawn off the Red October sample and their tours cover most things.

Good Morning Mike
I reckon you could be the best person to do the homework if you don't mind! I really don't know anything about St Petersburg, what we need to do and what we don't. Please feel free to choose what you think is best and we will see if it's affordable. I have just found a site called tourdeforce.travel and they do them too. Of course if you do feel at any time to not bother with the idea it's ok!

Hi Fiona.
Yes these web sites are a little teadious. I have looked at Denrus,Tourdeforce,Anastasia world, Redoctober and others. The main choice is does one want a private van or a small bus, travelling with other people. The bus looks very good value at $295US + $69US for the shows, total cost $364US and covers most tourist sites. It also includes a river cruise, lunches, still camera permits and most entrance fees. Against an average of $370-400US + extras. All companies give Tourist Visa cover.
The Denrus site has a wealth of information posted on it and is sraightforward to read, but takes time. Both Dianne and I speed read it last night along with some independant reports from other cruise passengers and we would be confident of using them.
As Olsens haven't put out a price list of excursions yet, we checked the values of the tours, in our last tour booklet and the above prices were very good for the 2 days.
Yes we are interested
Check your E mail and if you have any concerns, just follow our instructions.
I hope this helps and thank you Fiona, for your help.

I cannot believe you get to go on so many ships! Have a great weekend.
Thanks for the email, I will give you a ring to discuss the options. I too really need to look at the cheapest possible option otherwise it just won't be affordable with it being x 4.
I have received info from tourdeforce:
US$282 - 2 Day excursion
- Personal English speaking guide
- Air conditioned mini bus (up to 15 people, they make up the numbers)
- Museum fees included
- Snack lunch included
Day 1: City tour, Peter & Paul Fortress & Cathedral, Catherine Palace / Amber Room
Day 2: State Hermitage Museum, St Isaak Cathedral
I don't know if this is any cheaper? As I said I will ring you so we can discuss all the options.
Have a wonderful weekend, I will make the most of this beautiful weather here in Derby!

Hi Fiona.
I do not remember seeing this tour with tourdeforce. Looking at the information that you have sent, it seems that the extras that Denrus offer are the canal cruise taking you past the Battleship Aurora, a traditional Russian lunch in one of the better restaurant in St P, and on day 2 you go to a restaurant specializing in international cuisine, both are 3 course meals with drinks. The other things to check are the photo permits for still cameras and that all entrance and fares are included. the qoute that you have, is around £8.50 less expensive than Denrus and seem to be on a smaller bus. It seems to be a choice of seeing slightly more and bearing in mind the length of the days, and having the meals instead of snack lunches How ever, I have not had a hard qoute from them as yet, I'll try and get an E Mail off to them today.

Hi Fiona & Andy.
I have been delving through the information again and this is what you get for the US$295.
You have a city and suberb tour with photo stops at Palace Sq, St Isaac's Church, etc.
The following inside visits are included in the price.
1 The Catherine's Palace.
2 The Peterhof Parks and Gardens.
3 The Hermitage & Winter Palace.
4 Peter & Paul Fortress and Cathedral.
5 Visit some of the Metro Underground Stations(the peoples palaces) and take a train ride.
6 A 1 hour Canal and river cruise, passing the Battleship Aurora.
7 The Church Of the Spilled Blood.
8 Attend 2 x 3 course Luncheons at some of the better St P/burg's Restaurants, with drinks included.
9 A choice of 3 evening shows for US$69 p.p Ballet, Opera or Folkloric music & dance show, if required.
All still photo permits and visitors visa's.
English speaking guide. Max group size 30 persons. All are NON SMOKING excursions and no restrictions on how many persons, in ones party.
Hopefully this answers alot of questions regarding the values of these excursions for you.
The differerence being this trip is around £8.50p p.person more expensive, but includes full meals. Which is probably a good thing, as the tours start around 7am - 7.30am and conclude at 5.30pm - a long day. Plus it does visit more sites. I personally think this is a better value trip. I understand your concerns as the total cost of the excursions here for 4 people almost cost
the same, as the price of the cruise for one.
Any way give us a ring and have a chat about the above, and the other ports.
Yes we enjoyed our day on the "Rotterdam", it's really a most elegant ship and they looked after us well.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards Mike & Dianne.

I shall pass the details onto the Outlaws. Are you definitely booked on it?
We'll have to stick to the two half days from FO for many reasons. Having said that, if we later find FO half days come close in price I might plan to feed the children coca cola for a few days and book us all on it! One thing I would love to see and do is the metro station and another is the russian meal. I just love quirky stuff like that.

Hi Kez
Dianne and I were going on the private tour of the hermitage and concert and I was told that it would cost between £120-£150 and it only lasts for an afternoon. So this tour does look cost effective and We too would like to sample the food and visit the Metro, go into the Fort and the Church of the Spilled Blood and do the river and canal cruise.
So, Yes we will be going on the 2 day trip and maybe we will see and do more on their tourist visa, as they allow time out for shopping and other stops.
The company is actually American and you have the choice of paying up front, or on the day, but you have to leave your CC details, incase of a no show or cancellation. Which is normal practice.
Kindest regards

We sail for the Fjords, in 16 days and we had the new style tour brouchure arrive yesterday. When I phoned last week they were not accepting bookings until the brouchure was sent out. So I faxed our tours for the Norway trip, back to them yesterday - As I understand things, they will not accept phone reservations on tours.
Princess were just the same back in April they sent theirs out 14 days before departure.
I understand the tours are on the Olsen website, with an approx price tag, it will give you some idea of the costs.

This is going to sound an odd question but it's something that I wondered about last year on the Balmoral and never got to the bottom of (because I was too shy to ask). What are the five courses at dinner?
We used to have...
Starter or Soup
Main
Dessert or Cheese
Coffee
....now that is only 4.....where did we (technically) go wrong? I say technically because we weren't hungry, but I'd still like to know to advise the outlaws.

Hi all.
As it is rather expensive to park at the Dover Port, we have booked with Relyon Parking in Dover, via www.holidayextras.com (http://www.holidayextras.com/) Tel 0871 3602020.
The cost of secure parking, for the 12 days is £58.35, incl (.99p) cancellation insurance. I tried several companies, but they are all the same cost. The park is around 10 mins from the port and they shuttle you in and collect you, on your return. Maybe this info, will help some of you fellow cruisers.
Don't worry Fiona, about your weight. Just feel sorry for us, as I am going into this one 3lb heavier than I did the last trip, after controling myself since our return. Then when we get home from Norway, I have just 6 weeks to lose what I have gained onboard again.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon11.gif
Thanks Kerry for your best wishes, I see that they are still showing the Sauna, so I presume they will still have one, but we will check for you.
Anyway only another 7 days to go and so much to do, I'll be disappearing for a couple of days next week down to the coast, just to cut the grass and tidy up at our bungalow there, before we leave.
Anyway will talk again before then.

Your Mum will be right at home with FO - no panic required. I suspect a higher average age on this one than in August but, then again, with Dianne's age creeping up all the time - perhaps not ;)
Do you know your dinner sitting and restaurant on this one?
We parked at Dover Port last time. It was extremely convenient but also pretty expensive at just under £100 for about 13 nights. We looked at Relyon but they were full (we did a FO last minute deal - literally last minute) so being August I suppose that should have been no surprise.
We are taking the train this year on advance train ticket deals. Because we travel so far we are coming up on the 15th and back on the 29th with two guest house stays.

My mum always goes into panic mode ( with Olsens or whoever) and upsets herself for 24hrs. if she goes beyond that I march her to the doctors, for the injection and that never fails.
Dianne was just getting to like you, but now her age is creeping up, well these Aussie's don't take prisoners....!!
Yes, at just around middle age you do look forward and enjoy these cruises. Around 60, you have the Tee shirts and lay back and wait for the next trip, to roll along. Between 65 & 70 you start enjoy visiting these places again as the memories are good, but remembering is a dim recollection. After 70, its great because your visiting all these places and they all seem new to you.
Where do you have to travel from.
I have made my requests for our dining arrangements, But as its a last min booking, we will have to see what we end up with, once we are on-board. We do have our cabin numbers, at least that is something.
Well all the lawns are cut, etc. A trip to the dentist this afternoon. A massage tomorrow morning, then collect my drugs and finish planting out our garden. After that its just the packing of our cases, left for me to do on Friday/Sat.
Now don't you ladies start to get too excited - Its no good for the blood pressure.

Hello again.
We returned from the Balmoral yesterday after a truly wonderful cruise around the Fjords. Although we left Dover in fog, the weather improoved daily, reaching 32'. The ocean was like a mirror from start to finish and the scenery was out of this world.
Ship board life was good, with excellant entertainment & exceptional food, and the good news ~ I came home lighter than when I left home.
Our Captain was Johan Andrew Dyrnes, with Cruise Director Allan Tait.
As we were on first sitting dinner, it allowed us time to see both shows each evening and a walk around the deck in the balmy air, watching the midnight sun sink down just below the horizon. This was the only problem one could get too carried away and forget about time and early rises the following morning.
We received our requested dining table OK. BUT, it was in the Avon restaurant, not the Spey. So our apologies to you all, we really got it mixed up last cruise. But don't worry the Spey is a mirror of the Avon on the Port side. We have arranged for the same table and waiter, on second sitting in August.
The Sauna is open, but the steam room will not be operating.
Dianne's birthday went off well, especially at dinner with a bottle of Ruby Champagne, complimented with a bowl of fresh strawberries and a beautifully made, full size cake, covered in cream and fresh strawberries. Our table companions were delighted to join our celebration. As a tee total diabetic, I enjoyed my baked Apple and glass of water, but I did have a few strawberries. Hopefully our 25th will be just as nice.
Hoping that you are all fit and well, as its under 6 weeks now.
Talk again soon.

We sent off the booking and payment forms yesterday, for the 2 day excursions with Denrus Ltd in St P. So it is fingers crossed that they are operating on those days and they have spaces available. The cost if anyone else is interested, is US$295 per person, for the 2 days including lunches, still camera permit, visitors visa and entrance fees.
The only real problem that we had on Balmoral, was the drinking water from the cabin tap, very odd smells at times. We did report it and things improoved, but we stuck to the bottled water for the tea and coffee. On the last night we received a message that they were going to shut down all water supplies and do a full pipe cleanse that night, so hopefully it will have improoved by August.

We are waiting for the booking office to open - mind you, not too worried as I could do with being paid again before I book any : daughter is presently in Paris spending my last months wagepacket!
Got to sort the £$€ etc etc soon. How much of each.

Hi Kez.
We normally look at the ports and think what should our spend be. This year we work on about £35 - £50 per port, per person.
Probably the Highest spending ports will be Copenhagen, Stockholm and Tallinn, as all have markets and good shopping. Also they have hop on & off tour buses. So you will need Danish Kroner, Swedish Kroner and Euros. As for Helsinki, we have never spent much money there, unless you wish to do a tour.
As for St P/burg you should need very little money if any. If your on tours, maybe a few US$ or Euros and in Travemunde a few euros for coffee or snacks, etc, unless you go through to Lubeck for the day. You can always use visa or mastercard for more expensive payments. If you have both brands of cards, take both. As the Scandanavian systems can be tempremental at times. AMEX was a definite NO NO, last time we were here.
Hope this helps and you don't think that I'm trying to teach you how to suck eggs....!!
Going away to the coast for a week, this Saturday - weather providing!!!
So we will talk again soon

Well done Mike & Dianne, they had looked good to me when I was considering it myself. Wish we could do it too but never mind we will book a little FO excursion soon hopefully. I am really pleased you have got that sorted anyway!
I am excited isn't time flying! Fi x
Yes, time is passing by rapidly , especially when I had to spend 2 days in bed last week and feeling very stiff and sore for the rest of it. I woke up to the phone ringing, I had been asleep with my ankles crossed and when I got up my ankle turned under itself and I went flying across the carpet. So I ended up with carpet burns even thrugh my trousers, along with some nasty twists, pulled bits and bruising. Then I had to go to the dentist for an extraction, so Dianne had to drive me. I came out of the surgery and hit my head on the car. So last week wasn't a good one for me!
Check the cost of the Olsen tours, as i think this company may do a single day for around US$140 per person.
Now don't you get too excited, it doesn't do much for the blood pressure.
Regards
Mike

Hi Fiona.
Bear in mind that Olsen's, normally bring a Folkoric show on-board ship, when we are in port overnite.Have you researched any of the other ports that you were interested in.
I noticed that in Copenhagen, one could buy family tickets for entry to the places of interest and public transport. Also I think that the Tivoli was included in the package. Check on the Copenhagen web site for the details.
Another holiday, not really. I have appointments at the dentist to have a tooth added to my denture. Then the lawns have to be cut, the windows and plastic have to be washed. That is when the beach walking starts and the garden chair comes out. Unfortunately I have to return early, as I have a Luncheon to attend on Thursday.
Retirement isn't all, what its made out to be, you know.....!!!!
Will speak soon

We have been looking at things to do in Stockholm and have come up with some interesting web sites, which are as follows:

Hi Kez
Just opened up the shore trip sites, I don't think I'm up to walking the rooftops, especially at those prices - I don't even go up on my own roof these days. There does seem to be many things to visit in Stockholm, on the less expensive scale.
I received the tour book from Olsens this morning, I only had a glance at it, but the prices seem reasonable.

I've just seen the bit about fear of heights - think we'll give this a miss.
We received our tickets this morning but not the tour book yet.
There will be 3 formal nights, a British night and a Western night.

July 17th, 2009, 12:24 PM
The rooftops was recommended with tongue firmly in cheek! You won't get me anywhere near either - I get far too wobbly at heights.
We've had our tour booklets. Strange that we are cheaper due to oceans club, son cheaper I presume due to child price but thirteen year old daughter is more expensive than all of us at full price! Not that it will make a huge difference on the two trips we are likely to take, just looks really odd!
Looking forward to getting the tickets - seems even more real then. We were told british and western night last year - took proper cowboy hats and attire and it turned out to be a tropical night! I wanted to go as a tropical cowboy on principle but the children wouldn't let me so we dressed in casual and just used the free accessories and drank a few cocktails to theme ourselves!
We bought our son's formal attire last night (as his sister is away and it's a lot easier one at a time!). I doubt we will make the third formal night as it is very likely to be a port day by looks of the itinerary and we find it almost impossible to do a port properly and then have enough time to undertake all the pomp and circumstance for formal dress on an early sitting. Hopefully it willbe Thai or Indian night in the Palms - love those nights!

Sorry, didn't mean third formal night, but the second. I suspect it will be mid cruise, when we have days of port days.

July 17th, 2009, 03:20 PM
I guess the second formal night will be the day we are in Tallin, scheduled to depart early at 1600 and they don't need to leave early to get to StP, it's no distance.

July 19th, 2009, 08:51 AM
We have planned Copenhagen (thanks to my Danish friend) and Stockholm. The Copenhagen card seems to include Tivoli but only entrance - which is the cheaper bit. The Tivoli rides you then pay for either buy individual tickets (and rides use 1-4 tickets each) or you can buy a multi ride pass. The rides don't seem to be included in the Copenhagen card - if anyone knows any different, let me know.
For St P. we have gone for two 3/4 hour trips. Outlaws have decided to go for three ship tours as well.

July 19th, 2009, 12:46 PM
Hi Kez,
We are also thinking of Tivoli in Copenhagen - do you think the Copenhagen card is worth getting ? It's 225DKK( £27) and admission to Tivoli is 85 DKK (£10). I don't see that it's worth it unless you're doing other things.
( I don't think the card includes rides)
Kez100
July 19th, 2009, 03:00 PM
Assuming reasonable weather, we will walk to Tivoli via some other places of interest but we won't actually go in anywhere else (except perhaps the round tower for the view which isn't very expensive anyway) and then we will spend quite a while in Tivoli and get the bus back. We won't be getting the cards.

Hi guys,
My first post!
Just wanted to say that myself, my girlfriend, her two sisters and mum will be on this cruise next month. It's going to be my very first cruise so looking forward to experiencing it. The others have been on quite a few though so have been filling me in on what to expect. :)
Age wise, I'm 34, my girlfriend is 27 - her sisters are 29 and 18 and mum is late 50's.
Thanks for what's been posted so far in this thread. It was useful yesterday when we popped up to visit my girlfriends mum to sort out the excursions booking and other info. We didn't realise that St Petersburg was so restrictive and that the boat would be docked so far away.
We are just going to do the panoramic tour and the shopping day so we can get to see as much of the city as possible without too high a cost.

Hi Slingshot, welcome along!
We have managed to buy a very sensibly priced upgrade this morning from an inside on Atlantic to a restricted view outside cabin on Lido. It's close to our outlaws, which is why it was attractive for us. It's supposed to be a superior outside but, I think, the only thing that makes it superior is it's closer to the bars!
Done them a favour, I reckon. They now have a very attractive sited four berth inside to resell in the school summer holidays!

LOL, I like your thinking! How much did you pay for the upgrade and how did you go about sorting it out? We are on deck 4 in one of the middle cabins but I'd really love an outside one with a view. I have actually put in the 'Special Request' box to get an upgrade to a cabin with a balcony.. ;) Gotta try it on..lol.
Although I have also asked if I can DJ one night in the disco.. :D

July 20th, 2009, 09:07 AM
I think all the balconies have gone! I say that because my outlaws have a suite and they only booked that because there were no ordinary balcony cabins left and that was months ago. There may be some suites available!
You have to ask your agent what the extra cost would be. I rang FO first but they said as I had an agent I had to do it through them. The agent then gets you the price.
The disco is a very low key affair! Usually lucky to still be open at midnight! Mind you, last year, the teens gathered there and kept it alive best they could. They were a lovely bunch, seemed to get on really well.
We were on deck 4 (but outside) last year. We were perfectly happy with our cabin. I'd not pay the extra to be higher normally but it's right opposite the rest of the family and I'm sure the Grandparents will relish having their Grandchildren so close. LOL!

Heh heh.. I'm sure they will. :) Does sound nice though for you all to be close.. Of course the close bar proximity is a bonus..
I was expecting the 'disco' to be somewhat low key to be honest. Hopefully we can get them to keep it going a bit.. I am tempting to ask if I can plug my ipod in and bring the music up to date somewhat.. Not sure if they will indulge me though.. :)
I've always been quite the clubber so love dancing into the early hours. Of course I never thought the cruise disco would be anything like that, but as long as we can dance I'll be happy..

A new cruise terminal opened in St Petersburg earlier this year and is more central than the commercial port . I'm hoping we'll be using that - as far as I can see we are the only cruise ship in StP for those 2 days.

Having to start thinking about packing now. The FO booklet says that Informal for men is jacket and/or tie. Does this mean that either a jacket with an open necked shirt or a shirt with tie( but no jacket) would be OK or would you expect most men to be wearing a jacket and tie on informal nights ?
Kez100

It does mean what it says but I can't remember what most did. I do remember that my husband liked to have the jacket as well, at least to start the evening, but he usually left it in the cabin for the show.

From what I've read I get the impression that the dress code is mainly important for the actual meal part? I intend to dress up and make the effort for dinner but then change afterwards into fashion jeans, shirt and maybe a cool sports jacket for later stuff.
I also read that DJ's aren't essential even for formal night as a dark suit would also be acceptable? I think I should be taking a DJ though - just got to try my Dad's on.. :)

Hi to you all and welcome to SlingShotUK and RayF, great to hear from you both.
I have just returned home and read the postings regarding dress options in the restaurants, for the Gentlemen. I can tell you that Olsens do enforce the rules, as we witnessed several times on our last cruise.
These are the options
SMART CASUAL DRESS - Shirt, long trousers socks and shoes/no T shirts or flip flops.
INFORMAL DRESS - The options are that you can wear either a Collar and Tie or Jacket, or preferably both.
FORMAL DRESS - Either an Evening Suit, DJ/Tuxedo and Bow Tie or Lounge Suit and normal tie.
We have just received our charge from TourDeForce for the 2 day excursions in St Petersburg, the exchange rate was rather favourable and the cost was GBP£174 for the 2 days including lunches and everything. They have now offered us an evening Canal cruise for US$40, we are thinking about it, but it will make a very long day.
Talking of water cruises, we noticed that Olsen's were offering a sightseeing tour of Copenhagen by the cities waterways. Its a different way of seeing the city and the cost is only GBP£33.
Time is certainly starting to tick by rather rapidly and we, unlike yourselves, are not very organised on what shore things we will be doing, so I can see it being one of those weeks ahead - with Dianne doing all the reading and telling me what we will be doing.........!!!!!!!!!! That is while I thumb through all the new brochures that arrived this week and make the decission on where our next cruise will take us.......!!!!!!!!
Dianne mentioned that we have a different Captain on this trip, so sorry Kerry that I misled you.
SlingShot, as this is your first cruise, I'm sure that you are going to have a Ball on-board, with your young lady & family and may this be the first of many for you.
Well done with the upgrade Kerry,we are so pleased that it has worked out so well for you and yours.
Looking at the number of intrepid cruisers we have on this thread, would it be worth having a "meet and greet" get together on-board the first day, possibly at the Dover sailaway or sometime depending of course, on what time you all arrive and get yourselves sorted out. Any thoughts, any one?

Be delighted on an informal sailaway meet.
I say informal so we don't feel bad if we don't make it. There are a few things that may delay us, one being the childrens first get together which they won't want to miss and the timing will be in our cabin so we won't know it until we get there. Also, last time, the drill was very close to sailing. We did make the sailaway but only just!
Right, back to work. I have two massive audits to finish and if I don't I won't even be on board and we can't have that!

It sounds as if jacket AND tie is the norm for informal. That's not a problem, I just wanted to check. Dressing up is all part of the cruise experience for us, we don't get many chances to put our "glad rags" on in our day-to-day lives.
We've booked some excursions for StP and are looking at options for the other ports, although I think we'll probably do these independently.
I've just noticed on the on-line booking info that we have been allocated the Avon restaurant, although we specifically request it. Have to wait and see, although we're not too bothered as our cabin is on the same deck as the main restaurant.

Hey there Mick,
Thanks for the warm welcome - much appreciated. I'm certainly looking forward to the experience even though I'm not quite sure what it will be like and how the evenings will differ to our usual night life orientated holidays / breaks. :)
I think being out at sea will be quite an experience. Just wish we could have got a cabin with a balcony - I imagine that is a superb feeling.. Especially enjoying a drink before dinner.
Keep us posted on a potential meetup and then like Kez says we can look at making it if everything goes to plan.. :)

Do you know if you are on early or late dining sitting, SS? You may not know yet if you have booked on a late deal. It makes a bit of a difference. On a summer holiday cruise I would think most children will be on the early sitting although how many there will be waits to be seen.
Early evening there are the bars - last year the Lido had Jazz and the Obs a girl singing and playing the piano. It isn't cut throat modern stuff but both acts were of good quality, so if your music appreciation crosses the genres, you should enjoy it with a pre-dinner drink. Not sure what was on in the Morning Light Pub, we didn't tend to go there.
On the first and last formal night there is a cocktail party hosted by the Captain. A free drink (or two) and canapes and a witty talk by the Captain. Just go with it, dress up and you'll have a great time (even if it's not something you would do usually)
Then the meal makes you feel you have finally grown up! Even if a formal meal with good food and wine, service and conversation wouldn't be your first choice, it's a great experience to have had (and one big reason we are looking forward to going back).
Then you have a choice of entertainment - the main show which will be ship entertainers some nights and guest acts other nights. For guest acts we had a brilliant magician and comedian and an awful (in our book) lady singer. On nights you didn't want to see the main show there was another act of some sort in the Lido lounge or Morning Light, or the piano music in the Observatory. Some of these acts are on twice to cover the second dinner sitting.
Don't under estimate walking the promenade when at sea on a calm, balmy night. It's an incredible feeling - just you and miles of sea.....
The Observatory was where the 'disco' took place (allegedly). I am usually asleep by then as I get up early to hit the ports and I getting old now; so don't go stamping your feet in the coridoors of deck 9 if you're bored!
There are special one off shows - crew show one night and we had a passenger talent on another.
Not night time but.....
As a youngster you may like gyms. The best room in the Balmoral houses the gym with an incredible view over the sea. A lot of the younger entertainment staff used the gym and we met some younger people that way. The launderette is also very social! (I've often said they need a bar down there!)
Just go with the flow. Have a ball. (and don't tell your mates ;)

As everyone seems to think thet a get together is a good idea, I take on board Ketz's pm. comments about L/boat drill, ours was due for 4pm, got put back to 4.15 and happened at 4.35. Which is tight for returning life jackets to ones cabin and meeting at the sailaway. As the first night is a casual affair, has any one a suggestion, to a time and venue to suit both dining times.
The Morning Light Pub has been altered around slightly in the last 12 months, you no longer have to walk across in front of the entertainer. There was a guy playing a keyboard who had a lovely voice and it was a pleasure listening to him.
They have also taken away the lovely caged peacock, by the theatre exit and some of the more expensive sketches have disappeared that hung in the Art Gallery.
Loved the Cake shop Ketz, thank goodness at times like this, that I am a Diabetic!

Hey there Kez,
Awesome overview! Thank you. That does give me some idea on what to expect and some of the things I'll look out for.
I do like a bit of Jazz - especially swing or the crooner stuff. Be great to hear some of that live with a few drinks.
Ah the famous captains party. I keep hearing this mentioned by my girlfriend and her mum. Sounds like a very formal affair and a unique one at that. I like the sound of free drinks. ;) I can imagine it probably feels quite good being all dressed up and schmoozing with the captain. heh.
Ooh I'm not sure about feeling grown up .. Do I have to. ;) Trying to delay that for as long as possible. I do like big visual experiences so I can imagine having a quality meal in a large and grand restaurant is quite a feeling. Definitely one to try.
I imagine the entertainment can be a little hit or miss depending on the act's but we'll certainly be checking out what is on. Certainly going to go to the disco although we're aren't expecting anything to exciting.. ;)
Ah the walk on the promenade idea sounds wonderful. Again, that is something I really like the sound of as it must be a really big experience. The feeling of motion, the sounds, the look of the water under the night sky.. Superb. Defo be going to the front or the back of the ship at night and taking it all in.
I'm in two minds about the gym. I work out regularly but I kind of feel that holiday is a time to take a well earned break from it. I know my girlfriends sister is going to use it daily though - but she is quite an exercise addict heh.
Saying that though it might be cool to use if there isn't anything on that day that takes our fancy. I assume they don't have a punchbag that you know of (probably asking abit much.. ;) ).
Also, do they have deck tennis etc? Looking forward to doing something like that in the day if the weather is nice.
LMAO about the laundry. Isn't it brilliant how places that you wouldn't expect to be super social are. You know the bar idea isn't that crazy. When we went to Miami in 2006 there is a bar called 'The Laundry Bar' which has a working laundry is the back area.. Awesome.. ;)
Thanks again for your advice.
We are having dinner at 20:30 I believe.

Mick, you are probably closest to our gratuity expert.
Do you know why the wine waiters don't get an 'advised' gratuity on FO? There isn't any additional service charge so do they get any commission built into sales or any cut of the head waiters gratuity (do you know)?

Hi Kez.
As I'm Tee Total, I only use the wine waiter about 4 times a cruise and I have never tipped one in the past. I understand that they may draw a small commission on sales. Providing I get the service, I give the suggested graturities to the waiter and cabin maid. I also show a little appreciation to the Captain waiter as he normally does a great job organising my diets.
I have seen passengers tip the wine waiter with either a £5 or £10 note, its up to ones personal choice.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Mick. We did £10 last time plus 3x recommended for the waiter and cabin (covering children at 0.5 each) - no one would advise us on children, so we did what we thought and gave their other 1x to the childrens staff.

Our tours are now booked, we are going on the "Historic Stockholm and Sigtuna" excursion and the "City and Harbour" tour in Copenhagen. We have also added an early evening program in St P/burg, "See the city from the waterside" - a canal and river cruise. So now I can sit down with the brochures and plan for our next adventure.
When speaking with Fiona, she thought that we had a day time, transit of the Kiel Canal. Unfortunately this is not the case, as we start the transit at 1.30am and complete it at 10.30am. Which is a great shame, as its a lovely day sailing through the German countryside.
Yes, its under 3 weeks now and my diary is filling up rapidly and it doesn't look like I am going to have much spare time until we depart. So fingers crossed that it is a nice day tomorrow so that my pal and I can have a day at the coast.
I received a posting from CC today, from the cruise that we did last September, it has had 2024 postings on it - that must be some kind of record - and it is still going strong today.
Don't forget to have some thoughts about a time and place, that will suit all, for a meet up on embarkation day. Maybe, some time after sailing in a bar somewhere that is easy to find.

Hi Mike,
That evening excursion to see the city from the water sounds lovely. I think we totally missed that when looking through the brochure. We are just doing the sightseeing one and then the shopping one the following day.

Mick, is the Kiel transit likely to be the Gala buffet night?
Our daughter thought so and had plans of dragging us to the buffet (we were too tired last year and she was very annoyed with us!) and then, after demolishing some of it, she intends to watch our entry into the canal (assuming there is some sort of artificial light at that point.)

It looks as if the last formal will be on the 26th, which could mean the evening buffet could be held the night before. As the 27th should be the crew show and then its bags out for Dover the next morning. Thats only my thinking, as it could be held at any point during the cruise - this is the first 12 day cruise that we have done, so we like yourselves, we can only hazzard a guess at the order of events.

Will it be brighter skies where we are going? I'm fed up of dull, grey and wet thats all we have had in Derby for ages. Not bothered about hot just need some brightness it's getting annoying. Andy says it's been ok in London where he has been working though.

Hey Fi,
How awful has the weather been. :( I to am sick to my stomach of the classic British summer. I'm just hoping the European weather is better but I must admit I'm a little worried.. I so need some sunny, cocktails, swimming pool deck time if I can grab some.. :)
We live in Nottingham so can totally relate to the clouds..

Well the other half of Nottingham and Derby are down here in the westcountry on holiday and they are suffering the same weather - it's completely tipping it! I especially feel for the campers.
Who knows what the weather will be like! Last year the jacuzzis and pools were heated so we went in them in a variety of air temperatures. We even went in the pool and jacuzzi on highland deck in the fog in Geiranger Fjord!
No tickets Fi? What's going on there? Mind you, I don't think ours are the right ones anymore. I would think our bag label colours and the ticket will have to alter due to our change of cabin and deck.

Hey Kez,
That sounds awesome! Love the idea of being out on deck in fog in a heated pool / jacuzzi - brilliant.
What I have always liked about Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest is the outdoor heated rapids part of the swimming pool. Great to be out at night in any weather with underwater lighting and fully heated.
Will definitely make use of the heated pools on this cruise..

Hi Fiona
Don't worry about your tickets, ours haven't arrive yet either.
Sorry to hear about your weather, apart from a little rain, our weather has been windy, sunny and warm - got burnt on the beach yesterday....!!!

I suspect we may be the only first sittings. We are also tied because the children's club require us to accompany the children to the clubs to sign them in and out and we have no way of knowing when the first children's 'get to know each other' party will be.
Please go ahead and arrange for the rest of you who I would imagine are on second sittings, and I will note the time and place and try my best to pop in and show a face.

Still no tickets for me - I have rang TA who informed me that they are expecting them around the 10th as they are being produced manually - I'm sure that's what she said...I was trying to ring on my mobile from work. I have never had this before, seems a bit wierd to me. They said they would have to special deliver them if it gets later, I told them I don't receive post until really late (true) and we need them for Friday at the latest. I have just emailed FO too - sorry if this is all unnecessary, I have never had to chase tickets before and if I'd been told I would not have been concerned.

Good morning to you Sanpetra and welcome to this thread. I looked at many sites in St P for excursions, the only problem we had was the time that Balmoral docked - around 8.30am. Most tours start around 7.30 - 8am
We have already booked a 2 day program with ToureDeForce, St Petersburg, who will collect us at 9.30am and allow a 30min time buffer. The cost is US$281(£174) per person for both days including lunches and most things.
We have also included an early evening canal cruise(US$41pp) which ends the day around 6.30 ish pm back at the ship. We actually paid by cc which was all straight forward with receipts from the company and the Bank etc.You are very welcome to join us for the 2 days. If you wish to come along contact them direct and mention our name(Michael Medhurst) as they offer one evening ticket to the Ballet or folkloric show FOC, for introducing 2 persons to go on the same 2 day tour. As I wouldn't be wanting to use it, you could have it with our pleasure.
We are meeting at 10.30 am in the Observatory bar, deck 11 forward, on the first sea day if you would like to join us.
Hope this helps you

We (the adults) won't be themed, I don't think. Probably go with tan/beige coloured clothes.

The cost is around £58 and they take you to the port and collect at the end of cruise.

Hi
We don't use the onboard hairdressers, but on page 26 of your cruise/tour book, it states hairstyling from £20 - so I guess that would be the lowest cost - maybe for a cut.

Hi guys,
On the Balmorral, do you know if it's possible to get a bucket of ice for the cabin? We're thinking of taking some orange juice etc and it would be great if we could chill it at night. Can we just go to the bar and request some?
Also, what do you recommend about currency exchange? Is it worth converting money on the boat or just taking sterling onshore and converting locally?
