I have heard that they have a great BBQ night on the deck? Can anyone tell me what night that is and what are the choices ( steaks etc.) Also what are the hours. We may go there instead of the DR that night. I have not heard anyone mention this. Thanks Rick

Check your itinerary. Usually the port that you are in longer is the BBQ night.
For example, if you are St Thomas first and then Tortola - BBQ night will be while you are cruising slowing to Tortola.
We used to BBQ - years ago - when it was great - any many people went.
But the last couple of years we haven't gone. The steaks were tough - no where to sit unless you went early to reserve a table. Lately HAL has not been putting up extra tables to accomodate everyone. A lot of items like salad and rolls ran out very quickly and weren't replaced. There was a time when people loved going to the BBQ and 2 lines were set up for everything. We have noticed that on our last cruises only one line for everything.

BBQ night is usually the same night as Dutch Night in the dining room (search on "Dutch Night" for lot's of comments on both that and the BBQ). This will typically be a night in which you are in port until late (so that people might also choose to dine ashore).

Krazy Kruizers, I noticed that exact same thing on the Rotterdam last March. Running out of food, early, one line instead of two, fatty steaks, not like it used to be for sure. We enjoyed the BBQ, but have had better in the past. We'll see what happens next year on the Zuiderdam and Volendam with the BBQ. Hope things have changed, I did put what I thought of the BBQ in my comments before I departed the Rotterdam. Let's hope someone at HAL was listening.

We went to the barbeque on the Zuiderdam and on the Oosterdam and it was great both times. The dessert table is worth going for. We did not find the steaks tough and did not have any problem finding seating either time.
My son and his wife went to barbeque night on their Zuiderdam cruise and thought it was wonderful.

Have to agree with KK. We went to the Lido BBQ on our last 3 sailings. Each time, the steak was very thin & very tough; the ribs were more fat than meat; burgers were like hockey pucks. Even those who arrived a little early were greeted by one long line and nearly empty serving bowls & platters. Found the BBQ on HMC to be much better organized, everything was constantly refilled and even tho there was another HAL ship there besides ours, service flowed smoothly.

Learjet......I just returned from the Z on Saturday. On our shortened cruise (due to Jeanne) we had BBQ night Wednesday evening. It was fabulous!! The steak(strip) was about half an inch thick and very tender, the ribs were falling off the bone and the chicken was my favorite!! Please try it!! I don't think that the all you can drink Pina Coladas hazed my dining experience one bit either!!:D (they were served in carved out Pineapples) There was plenty for everyone!! Nancy

The BBQ is TERRIFIC !!! It was on Dutch night in July. Search for my rlong review thread that I posted in August for lots more details.
The steaks (yep - I had several) were excellent !!! And I can also vouch for the All You Can Drink Pina Colada special.

After reading the last few posts, I am very encouraged about the BBQ's on my upcoming cruises. Thanks for posting your experiences. One question, did they serve salmon at these BBQ's? I know in the past they did have it and also served it on the Rotterdam last March, but, this was one thing they ran out of early!!!!!!!!

Doone - I can't recall if they served salmon or not - sorry, but I am a beef eater, not really a fish person so I didn't pay attention if they had fish

Superstein61, thanks. To be honest, I love food, I'll always find something on the menu I'll enjoy, just LOVE salmon.

It's probably a good idea to go to the bar-b-que early rather than late. We were on the shortened Zuiderdam cruise last week and ate about 7:30. The baked potatoe was cold and the steak was dry. There was no place to sit but we ate inside in the Lido which worked out well.

Sorry, but the Lido is not open to pax on BBQ night.Depends on the ship and the cruise. There was a cook-out one night on the Rotterdam this summer (German Fest, I believe); the Lido was open with a different menu.
