I just read an article about pirates trying to overtake a cruise liner (Oceania) near Somalia. The pirates fired several shots at the cruise ship from 2 small boats. The saavy captain was able to outrun the pirates. Just wondering if this is causing some of you expert cruisers to avoid these areas?

Well, that might be very difficult to answer.
We sailed through the Gulf of Aden 11-06, on the very same Nautica, and there was some concern re pirates when we went though a fleet of fishing dhows. The ship is equipped with the LRAD (long range acoustic device), which can be used to repel boarders, along with fire hoses.
Many people still travel to Singapore and Indonesia, yet the area is well known for piracy.
If one stops travelling to all potential trouble spots, you might not ever leave your home, and I am not sure how safe that might be!!
