Hi Everyone,

The below photos are courtesy of a fellow Cruise Critic member who was able to capture them while Ryndam is in drydock! I am investigating the proper screen name right now (as I only know him by name) so that I can give due credit.

In photo one you can see where the Greenhouse Spa is being extended forward. You can also a wind guard that was added above the Crow's Nest Lounge much like that seen on the Vista Class ships. It appears that the lettering "RYNDAM" has been removed and my hunch is that it is being moved aft as it would appear on a Vista Class ship (can't be certain as of yet, however). You can see that that area has been constructed aft.

In photo two it is apparent that the additional facilities for the youth are well under way.

It is all very exciting and makes me even MORE eager to set sail on December 4th !!

Enjoy the photos and I thank the photographer very much!

Thanks for the photos and information. DH and I will be aboard the Ryndam in March of next year, so we are counting on you to get us up to date with all the changes that have been made. Right now, I rather have mixed feelings, but I will hold my final judgement until I have actually seen the changes.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Now, can Venture don his carpenter overalls and walk onboard to get some action shots of the rennovations? ;)

Thanks for the remodeling photos Steve!

Have you been able to gain access to an interior preview via an agents preview?

There should be some preview material as there is going to be a big showcase next week online when they unveil the Ryndam. The Rotterdam will be in New York and there will be a big telecast on board .. coast-to-coast to display the Ryndam. It's getting exciting !!

This is so exciting:D :p since I will be boarding her 4 weeks from tomorrow. I can't wait to see her. Steve do you suppose they are expanding the gym with the spa to go across the front like on the Vista Class?

Thanks so much for sharing this!!!

Since you're my HAL expert, any photos of the new facilities on Half Moon Cay?

I am not so sure I like the Garden Spa extension. It looks like it could be eating up some good viewing deck area....possibly obstructing the view from the Crows Nest.
Also the great lines of the Ryndam might be a little messed up.
Of course, it may look better when we actually get a clearer picture of it in port.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I am very fond of the Ryndam.....one of my favorite ships.

Hi Everyone,

Please see below the additional photos that I received. Special thanks, again, to 'Venture'.

While it is difficult to see any dramatic changes from these the most noticeable change to me is the lettering on the side of the ship. My previous guess was wrong that it would be moved aft. The lettering remains forward BUT notice that they are now multi-cased. I had always wondered why the "S Class" ships had 'all caps'. The lettering is now also MUCH brighter! I had always felt badly that the HAL ship letters would be so dim (the tivoli style lighting) compared to other ships in other fleets.

Anyhow .. enjoy and have a good night!

Steve

Great Pix again Steve - Thanks!

But it looks like somebody on the ship has left the engines running...
 Is this in case Ryndam needs to make a quick getaway???

Even out of the water, the ship's engines must run to a certain degree to keep the power running, etc. That's all ..

But it looks like somebody on the ship has left the engines running...I'm sure there's no power going to the propellors - but as Steve said, if the ship is to have any electricity, the generators have to be running.

Note that when the ship is docked in port there is generally exhaust coming out of the funnel too - again, this is just the ship's generators running, as there's no need for propulsion when the ship is docked (obviously), be it in the water or out.

In the case of all the HAL ships except NOORDAM and PRINSENDAM, the ships have diesel-electric propulsion which means that the only engines the ship has are generators; the propellors run off electric motors powered by electricity from those generators. So in this case it's quite literally the same engines being used regardless of whether the ship is actually going anywhere (though they generally would be using a greater percentage of their capacity - i.e. more engines, each ship has four or more - when the screws are turning). In ships with diesel-mechanical propulsion, where the generators are separate from the propulsion engines (which are mechanically coupled to the shaft), the propulsion engines are shut down while in port.

Just FYI.

As for the refit, externally as Steve said there are no really obvious changes (expanding the spa forward is pretty inconpicuous thankfully; NORWEGIAN CROWN's profile was ruined when she underwent a similar operation) but it is interesting to see that they've upgraded her name boards to the same ones fitted from ROTTERDAM on. To be honest I didn't think they'd bother with such small details, so it's nice to see it. Now, even in the night, nobody should ever have to doubt which ship she is!

I understand that ships have to run the generators for non-propulsive electric power while cruising or in port under normal conditions. I just sorta assumed that they would have plugged into shore power while in drydock, thereby enabling them to do add'l maintenance on the diesels. I seem to recall not seeing exhaust from ships drydocked here in SF...

A ship can't simply plug in to shore power as one might imagine.

Of course in some cases the diesels do all have to be turned off in drydock - for instance, when a ship is being re-engined ;) - but it's generally not something that's done if it's not necessary.

I took the photos of Ryndam in the Victoria Drydock.

I would like to greatly thank Steve for posting them- I am at a total loss when it comes to 'posting & pasting'.

As one who has done 25 cruises with all the major lines, my wife and I really enjoy sailing with HAL- now only a couple of days from 100 with them. We have crossed the Atlantic in Rotterdam VI and the Oosterdam, the Zaandam from Port Canaveral to Vancouver,Statendam from San Diego,Hawaii to Vancouver and memorable cruise up the West Coast in Rotterdam V.

The officers and crew on every HAL ship we have sailed have gone 'out of their way' to help make cruising enjoyable.

We had the privilege of dining with the Captain of the Statendam earlier this year on our Hawaii trip. He told us of the massive 'upgrades' and changes that would occur to Statendam in April of 2005 in Victoria. Living in Victoria gave me the chance to watch Ryndam- the first to have this completed .

She was in drydock for 17 days and crews from the shipyard and contractors from around the world worked nonstop to complete the job. The last 3 photos I took on Saturday. The 2 taken in daylight, about 11a.m. the ship was still on the blocks- no tenders or lifeboats on and the cranes were busy taking off garbage containers. The last photo taken about 7p.m., the graving dock was flooded, the gates were floated away, the tenders and boats were secure and she was ready to proceed to San Diego. I understand some contract work will still be done on her way to California.

She really looked 'stately' and ready to make many more passengers happy for the next ten years. Her profile is just as lovely as ever and her now emblazoned name is just the right touch!

We are doing the Nov.26/05 Southern Caribbean in Veendam, it would be nice if she had her changes completed by then - we will still enjoy regardless.

Happy sailing,

Dave

Dave, Thank you so very much for taking the pictures. Don't feel bad I have not figured out how to post the pics on this board either. I bet it was fun watching her in Dry Dock. What a lovely city you live in. We were on the Oosterdam this past May, unfortuately the night we were in Victoria the weather was not great (we were there the night the Diamond Princess had in little accident) Even with the weather not being great we could tell you have a very beautiful city and we do want to return very soon.
Thanks again for getting Steve the pictures it just helped my excited in getting to sail on her November 13th.

I watched the program on line this afternoon in which many of the enhancements on the upgrade of the Ryndam were shown. She has sure changed a lot. It will be interesting. HAL is obviously trying to reach out to people with Children and teens. Gary Walker is currently the CD on on Ryndam and he did a nice job showing people around the shiip. I liked what I saw of the "Signature of Excellence".
Thanks HAL

P.S. She should be about ready to sail
