We're looking into booking Zui for February and thought a VA stateroom with a verandah overlooking the back of the ship would be great. Then we were told the motion would be terrible. Any previous experiences to share?

We had a great time in cabin 4135, it had a larger balcony than other decks but it was not all the way aft. Too much motion for me back there but 4135 was not bad at all :)

Depends entirely on the seas...

When its relatively calm, you won't have a care in the world...
But when the seas get rough (12'-15'+ swells) and you're on an upper deck at the extreme end of the ship - better hold on!!!

We had a couple days of that on Amsterdam - we were in a Deck 7 aft stateroom, and it was like trying to sleep through an 8 hour long earthquake! Mornings, I literally had to lean into the corner of the shower to keep from falling out!

While it won't keep me from that location again, but I can now understand how folks will prefer a more centrally located/lower stateroom.

Although I have to wonder - w/ all the grumbling about the aft-vibration on Zuiderdam in her 1st season (since fixed), why nobody ever mentions the vibration on Amsterdam? It really is BAD - a consistently cyclical reverberation which can be felt all the way to the mid-ships Lido! Never experienced anything like it on Oosterdam. Does anyone know if its always been this way or are the pods are going bad like Celebrity has been experiencing w/ their Millenium class ships?

On most ships the aft cabins get a fair bit of vibration from the engines and the thrusters.

We had an aft verandah cabin on Oosterdam. Calm seas and no vibration. We did have a dirty verandah most of the time, however. The dirt and grit from the smokestack settled on our verandah every day. Also, it is a long hike from the aft of the ship to the health club and spa. You get your mile walk in if you make that trip back and forth three times.

Next time we will go for a more midship stateroom.

We were on deck 6 on the wake and experienced no unusual vibration, soot, or voyeurs. It was so good, we booked another one for next month.

Candy <-- needs to walk more, anyway

We are booked on the Volendam in the rear of the ship (6228). Did anyone have this cabin or a similar one? Are there any issues with being in the rear?

I've heard wonderful things about the aft cabins. We have our first one in a few days on the Spirit and then our first suite on the Oosterdam (S5187) in February. :)
Hoping for calm seas after reading bepsf's posting!

IMHO>>>Aft cabins are not for me.

The further up front you are you will feel the "pitch" of the ship more.

"Roll" is a function of how high above the water you are.

But, the motion that gets me the most, "yaw", is felt in the rear/stern of the ship the the most. Hence, I'm not an aft cabiner. But, that's just me (or rather, my middle ear)

Just came off the Zuiderdam less than a month ago in cabin 6165 (Aft Veranda) and loved it! Huge Veranda, great view. Veranda was not significantly dirtier than any other side veranda we have had. It is open on top so there is more of a chance for dirt etc to get into it, but it was not filthy. Motion wise, we did not notice any. 6165 is located very close to the centerline of the ship, and there was no rolling motion at all. The seas were not terribly rough, so we did not have any vertical motion as you would expect in higher seas. Vibration wise, there were none that we could detect. Smooth ride for the whole week.

Heading East at sunset made the room worth it. Unobstructed view of the setting sun from our large private veranda was simply awesome. I have a great photo that I now use as my desktop on my computer at work of the Sun setting into the wake of the ship. Simply breath taking.

We loved it so much, we booked another aft veranda on the Westerdam next December.
