Normally I'm used to formal nights being on the second night; however, this particular itinerary has HMC as its first stop the day after sailaway with a sea day the following day. So is formal night still on the second night, or in this case is it postponed until the third night?
I'm assuming that the second formal night would be two nights before return.

You are correct in assuming that the first formal night will not be on the day you are at HMC -- it will be the next evening. That's the way it has always been when we have HMC as our first stop.

If I'm remembering correctly: In December - the first formal night wasn't on our HMC day but the next day which was a sea day - Tuesday. The second formal night was on Friday another sea day.
Have a great cruise - we really enjoyed ours.

We are sailing a 7-day cruise on the Westerdam 3/8 and the first stop is also HMC the day after sailaway, but the next day is also a port day, with sailaway at 5:00 pm. Our first sea day is the following day, with the second sea day the day before we get back. I would doubt that would be a formal night, but the night before, sailaway isn't until 7:00 pm. Anyone been on this particular itinerary? (was that clear as mud, or what?)
