Hello fellow CC'ers: I meant to post a live post while on our two week cruise on the Maasdam but I could NOT get on the site for some reason. My password wasn't working or something.

I will post a more detailed review upon returning home. My DH and I are presently enjoying a week in Daytona before heading home to COLD Canada.

We met a fun group of CC'ers at our Meet and Greet. Hi David and Graham; Bill and Connie and Bobbi and Ryan, among others. It was a blast!!

The Maasdam is now in dry dock. She is still a wonderful ship but needs a bit of a face lift here and there. The crew is AWESOME and the captain was great. I enjoyed his reports mixed with a sense of humour !!

You probably heard that we started off the cruise with a Code Red ! The cruise previous to ours had an illness outbreak so we were late in embarking by one hour due to STERILIZATION of the ship. The first few days were tight with the staff handing us EVERYTHING. Couldn't use the coffee machines ourselves or the fountain area. Couldn't serve ourselves at the buffet for salads, drinks, etc. The Captain kept reminding everyone to WASH WASH WASH and sing the birthday song twice while washing. So he would remind us from day to day to "sing and wash". It was cute. Then the alert was lifted thankfully and all was back to normal.

We had FOUR formals and a Black and White Ball with the officers in the Crow's Nest which was great. Everyone looked lovely.

Weather was fabulous !! No rain at all except a few rainforest showers which came and went on an island or two. Now the phrase "liquid sunshine" has true meaning. There were gorgeous rainbows on Dominica and one rainbow actually FOLLOWED THE SHIP. It was unbelievable. The ends of the rainbow were right there at each end of the stern. I will post pics.
Will post a bit later. Any questions, just ask.
:)

Several have asked this question, without answers on other blogs. Did you hear from the crew about which repairs were being done on the MS Maasdam during this weeks dry/wet dock?

I too am interested in the dry dock of the Maasdam. Aliaschief and our group are sailing on her in 100 days or so. Hope they make her real pretty for our repositioning cruise in May. Colakid.

This just CAN'T be a fair and balanced review of the MAASDAM.

I didn't see a single mention of 'Air Conditioner', 'Never Again', 'Cruise from He**' 'Sewage Smell' etc.

Gee whiz. Some people spend two weeks on a ship and just never notice a darn thing!
:D

There were some things noticed. Some people did have a/c problems. Our cabin was fine this time. There were some plumbing issues - a black residue in toilets, etc. I believe this is what they are working on this week among other things. Yes, it would be nice to see what changes are made.

No matter what they do to the MS Maasdam she still is going to be beautiful and we are so looking forward to meeting the so applauded and awarded crew.

We are in the "blocks" and ready for a cruise from Florida to Montreal, Canada on this grand and highly lauded ship. We would go in the broom closet but will most likely on the Navigation Deck.

We feel really BLESSED that we can still look forward to acheiving such wonderful dreams. This will be our fourth sailing on Holland since the summer of 2007. Limited experience with the Holland America Line but we truly believe that we are getting ready to go on another dream vacation.

................and bring it on because WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME;)

black residue in toilets

I've wondered about that myself. From the little I know, the toilets do NOT use fresh water, but filtered water from the body of water the ship is floating in.

I wonder if it some kind of fragments of a kelp type plant that is growing in the holding tank of the ship?

I've seen it on several of the ships we've been on. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape with it. I'd NEVER expect to have to drink that water any more than I'd try to dip a cup over the railing for "a nice taste o' the briney". ;)

Just my idle musings...

Has anyone heard what has been done to the Maasdam and if she's back sailing the high seas? She was going into dry dock right after our cruise on Jan. 23rd.

She is back to sea and done with her dry dock.
Her hull got a good paint job under the water line and I think the whole exterior of the ship was painted.

New piping installed, carpeting, cosmetics....... don't know what else but do know she is back to providing wonderful cruises. :)

Oh, that's good to know. She was in need of some cosmetics. So she will be as lovely as ever now. I hope they did some work on the cabins as for instance our cabin's curtains were badly stained as if there had been a spill on the window ledge and the drapes soaked it up. Just things like that.

Here she is at St. Croix in Jan.
