I am looking for the lightest luggage available to help with the airline weight limit. My large bag (Ricardo) weighs 15 1/2 pounds empty. Can anyone help?
Lenora

I do not want to use duffle bags. :-)

I have the same problem, my Samsonite Jumbo bag weighs about 15 empty! How about trashbags? Don't think I haven't thought about it!

We have soft-sided rolling bags that we bought a Macy's on sale for about $45.00 each a couple of years ago. I think each bag weighs about 5 pounds. There is a metal frame that goes around inside the bags and plastic so the bag holds its shape. We always weigh our bags before leaving home to make sure that we don't exceed the weight limit. We have discovered that cheap soft-sided bags seem to last as long as expensive ones and if the airline wrecks them (which they do), we don't feel bad about it.

go to www.ebags.com Click on luggage and then click on light weight luggage then click show all. I bought the travelpro suitcases from them and absolutely love 'em. Besides that I have been very impressed with their customer service.

I also buy our bags from ebags.com and have had wonderful service. They seem to carry the lightest in weight, and are very reasonably priced. I have found the higher priced luggage does not hold up any better than cheaper brands and as we travel an awful lot on planes, it seems as though I`m buying luggage every year!

I too am looking for light luggage. I was just at a quilt show and one of the vendors was selling sewing machine luggage. they also have regular lugagge. It seems to be well designed, four wheels, exterior frame, folds up to store, steers well and is fairly light 7-11 lbs. But too expensive for me. The website is tutto.com....sorry I don't know how to link. One of my friends bought a sewing machine one and she travels with her machine alot, so I'll hear how it holds up. I'm thinking cheap duffle on wheels ;)

I also found my new light weight luggage on ebags.com

I found an ad for ebags on the marriott.com website. I clicked on it and when I purchased my set of luggage I also received an additional 20% off because of the Marriott link. I bought a four piece Samsonite set. The largest of the four bags weighs only 6 pounds empty. I pack my clothes in a large lawn trash bag and then put the bag in the suitcase. The plastic bag protects the clothes inside in case this soft sided luggage sits in a downpour on the airport tarmac or the unprotected cruise terminal area. I'm also a big believer in zip lock storage bags instead of more heavy necessity bags. DH always brings a supply of different sized zip lock bags for cabin use. He likes to stop at the Lido Deli for a sandwich before going on afternoon tours. He gets two sandwiches and puts them in the zip lock bags to carry with him. If I'm lucky he will share with me when I get hungry.

I also try to prevent sopping wet clothes if our suitcases are left in the rain by lining them with dry cleaner bags. I put a few on the bottom and up the sides before I start to pack. After I finish packing (most of our jerseys, underwear, shorts, swim suits, shoes, etc all go in plastic bags), I lay a few dry cleaner bags across the top of the bag along with copies of our itinerary.

We have also used eBags numerous times. You can get some real bargains - I got a Briggs & Reilly carry-on for about $50 - it lists for over $200.

We have also had the problem with the bag weight taking up the "dwindling" baggage weight limit. I got two 26" bags at Costco that weigh 11.5 lbs each, those are the best we've found so far.

Sail- great idea, using the dry cleaning bags. I've often feared bags sitting on the run way or some other place getting wet. I think I'll try your suggestion - it may help alleviate a concern or two.. as the cruise gets closer, alleviating is high on my list!

Check out the Delsey Helium Lite 100 luggage collection. I bought one of the rolling duffels in this collection from eBags. Quite a savings in weight over my 26" Atlantic suitcase, and it appears to be very well made.
