 I finally convinced DH to try Holland America. We are ready to book a 5-day on the Westerdam. I love aft cabins; he wants balcony at least partially covered.
I see several cabins available -- 4174, 4176, 4179, 4181, 5181, 5182, and 6165. Have any of you stayed in one of these cabins?
I searched waaaay back on this board and couldn't find an answer, except that there is a partial overhang on the Veranda deck.
Can anyone help me? I am very anxious to book, but want to keep DH happy so need a balcony that is at least partially covered.
Thanks! I can always get answers here! :p

From what I have read, there is a very small overhang on all but the Navigation Deck (deck 8). Check out the pix on Candy's website and see for yourself.

I am not stupid, how come I can never find anything on Candy's website? People post a link and I see her site, pretty cool but for instance, where do I get a pix of the balcony on the nav deck?

Sorry for your difficulties... my photos were shot from my balcony (6167) so I could only get good shots of the balconies below. There is a little overhang on all rear decks except deck 8 which is almost fully covered. Anything else? I'll post some more after our 11/6 cruise.

I'll be in 5181 on 11/6, so if you can hold out that long, I'll post some new photos.

Sorry to mislead you. If you go to reviews and then the most recent Zuiderdam 2004 review there are pix of aft verandahs, but no Navigation Deck verandahs.
I've seen a photo of Navigation Deck aft but can't seem to find it now. Will post a link if I find it.

Aft balconies on the Zuiderdam have no cover. I assume that the same will be true on the Westerdam. You may get some shade when the sun is blocked by the ship, but we almost full sun all day last August on an Eastern Caribbean itinerary. Sun is almost overhead during the summer but, during the winter, you might get more shade.

Deck 8 wake balconies are almost completely covered. For the wake balconies below, you'll get some shade in the early morning and late afternoon from the dividers between verandas, depending on which direction the ship is going.

You are correct. I compltely forgot about Deck 8. I never considered them when we booked because they are directly below the aft pool and I thought they might be noisy.

Okay, I found a picture that I think is a deck 8 aft balcony, but I copied from a website and it's in a word doc. I can email it to you post your email address.:)
