Can u wear your bathing suit with a cover up in the lido for lunch or do you have to get dressed. This is totally different buffet setup then we are use to. Ncl you just serve yourself, except for the carving station. Is there any food stations set up on the pool deck like pizza or hamburgs?

The Lido requires shoes and a cover up at the very least. I have seen some in suits with coverups on but not many.
The Terrace Grill is out by the main pool and serves burgers, dogs, tacos, pizza etc.

They don't want to be able to actually SEE the bathing suit---you may have it on under either a cover-up or clothes, but I've seen women in shorts and the bathing suit top (bare tummy) turned away.

I have seen people in with a tank bathing suit and a skirt or shorts over them and flip-flops.

There is a hamburger/hot dog drill (very good, everything cooked to order)on the pool deck as well as a taco bar and we usually eat outside. If I have to run into the Lido to get iced tea I have a dress type cover up to throw on.
I do say that the funniest thing I have seen in the Lido over the years is the ladies who wander around the pool area and Lido wearing their HAL robe!

While on the Prinsendam last October, I saw a couple of men come in from the pool area in just their bathing suits. They were politely turned away and asked to put on a cover-up and shoes/sandals. They did.
I do want to comment that while on the Amsterdam last month in the dining room one evening, I saw a young woman being seated wearing a tank top and ragged jean shorts that were cut so short they showed her bum. I was pretty shocked that she was allowed in the dining room for dinner dressed that way but I guess HAL is allowing it. They must have 'cause she was being led through the dining room to be seated.

And how many of the dining room staff were following along behind her;)?

Can you? Yes.
"Should you" would be a different question.
Just off the Noordam this Monday ... on this latest cruise I saw several men, at various times, in the Lido around lunch time wearing a swimsuit without a t-shirt of any kind. I saw a woman eating in the Lido in a robe. They were rare. Most people at least put on a t-shirt or some kind of cover up before traipsing into to get food.
There IS the Terrace Grill out by the pool, where one can get all sorts of items without having to get dressed.

On the Westerdam right now, and please do not worry. Cover up and flip flops totally fine for the Lido restaurant. You will see anything and everything wearable, including HAL Bathrobes.
So far, formal night has been fairly consistent with people dressed decently but the scope from Sunday dress to Tux is amazing.
Please don't worry about dressing appropriately at the lido during the day. As long as you have a cover up on and some shoes you will be fine.

One of the 'incidental' sounds during hand to hand combat in 'Command and Conquer' was this amazingly applicable line:

On the Zaandam 12/7...I saw MANY things I had never before seen on a HAL ship....a woman in the Lido in a robe with her pajamas on for breakfast complete with fuzzy slippers (hello, you can order room service breakfast), at lunch a woman with the shortest, shorts complete with buns hanging out and the best.... going into high tea with a man in his gym shorts and a tank top (oh armpit hair at high tea - how refined!!) talking on his cell phone at sea.
I thought it couldn't get any worse, but as we were leaving high tea, a grown woman was standing at the door, waiting to be seated with her two little girls in bathing suits with wet towels wrapped around them :eek:. I couldn't bear to watch to see if they were seated. Let's just say, I didn't want to know!

However, there is also an outdoor grill venue ... the Terrace Grill ... that might suit your needs better if you're spending the day sunbathing. It's right outdoors and offers such things as hot dogs, hamburgers, tacos, pizza, etc. There you don't even have to bother with the cover up and can just walk over at your leisure in your bathing suit and flipflops.

This is why HAL requests this:

to avoid this (inside the Lido):

On my last HAL cruise, the announcement for High Tea included the caution, "No thongs permitted". I asked DW if HAL was going to check our underwear and she said "No you idiot, they mean flip-flops!"

So why are the posted rules for proper dress in the Lido NOT be enforced (or followed)?

So why are the posted rules for proper dress in the Lido NOT be enforced (or followed)?
One can ask the same question as for the dining room, the show lounge, the bars, etc. The only GUESS I can make is that it would depend on just how many people are ignoring the dress code for any one of those venues. If there are a lot of people wandering in and out of the Lido in bathing suits without proper cover-ups, then I would GUESS that the rule is not being enforced because passengers are clearly demanding that it not be. In that case, HAL is not about to offend large groups of passengers, and probably lose them forever, by playing hardball with regard to a dress code rule. Ditto for the dining room.
But if it's only a few isolated cases of passengers ignoring the dress code, then HAL is more likely to undertake enforcement actions, in order to appease the vast majority of the passengers onboard who are following it.
Remember, HAL is a business and as such they have to appeal to the majority. Yes, they can play tough when there are large numbers of passengers involved, but then they only bite off their nose to spite their face since that majority of passengers who were denied service in the Lido will probably never sail HAL again. And for what? So that a small number of passengers can be satisfied by watching that majority refused service?
No, as with all other things, I think majority will rule in these circumstances, and if you happen to be on a somewhat casual seven-day Caribbean cruise with a lot of younger people, families, etc. ... and they want a very casual dining experience, then that is exactly what HAL is going to provide ... and basically it's "tough stuff" if the other passengers don't like it.
