Is it just me or does the Eurodam, especially aaft cabins mona, grona and squeak more than the Vista ships?

On a recent cruise I seemed to notice a lot of creaking etc, like the panels were not fitted properly. And the hangers in the closet, after packing the last night I had to take them down so I could sleep.

Now I don't want to leave the impression that I did not like the Eurodam, I would sail on her in a minute, noises and all!

I'm trying to find the time to do a little review.

Our aft SC didn't have too many moans and groans but I agree about the hangers- I had to take all the ones that weren't in use down and lay them on dirty clothes to prevent all that noise!

Well I have to admit being on her for 2 weeks we did experience some of the moans and groans especially the first week on deck 7 Starboard side but our 2nd week we were aft deck 8 and it was quieter than I have ever had it.

I think some of it is settling. I can remember in early years on the Oosterdam there being all kinds of strange noises especially in the aft and the last few times we were there most recently October it was very quiet. I some times think that it takes a while for a ships to settle but also it depends on the seas. The Atlantic has had some challenging sea conditions over the past few months and the ship is built to moved so the moans and groans are just natural and should be there.

But back to the noises on deck 7 they were a bit in excess and I think they are aware of a few areas they need to insulate more the next time she is in wet or dry dock.

Did you get hit by the ICE STORM. What a way to get back to reality!
Our power was out from Wednesday to Saturday eve, we have an all electric house except for the ventless gas logs ( propane as there are no gas lines where we are) we installed this summer, a true lifesaver.

The fireplace was our only source of heat and I cooked outside on the propane gas grill, read by flashlight and candle light. They say Abe Lincoln read by firelight/candles he must have had better eyes then mine.

On the last night, on any ship, the hangers in the closet rattle unless you either tie them together or do something to stop them from moving around.

We were in an aft stern cabin on the Eurodam on deck 5 and had no moans and groans at all.

I noticed that on our first cruise which had smooth sailing, until we turned to sail in to Ft. Lauderdale early in the morning and hit some swells. The hangers rattling woke me up. :)

Actually the moans and groans were more like creaked & squeaks, punctuated by the slam of the doors to the verandahs. If you did not catch the doors the noise could wake the dead.

I don't recall hearing any noises. We were in a stern cabin on deck 7. Quiet as the proverbial church mouse. We were in calm seas, so didn't have to remove the hangars. We just pushed them all over to one side.

Ships used to make much more noise than they do today. Maybe historian Copper 10-8 can comment on this. I was in the travel business in the 60's and 70's and cocktail talk often commented on which ship had the most unique noises. I hadn't thought about it at all until this thread popped up. On the Ryndam (cabin 818) last year my husband commented on the fact that it was the quietest cabin we'd ever had. Times (and ships) change as the technology changes and improves things. ----Penny

Yes! We were quite "under the weather". I happened to be on vacation the week after we arrived home and had lots of fun plans for seeing friends, making visits, taking little day trips... instead I stared at my walls all week. Quite a bummer but not as bad as what many people went through so no real complaints are warranted. We did have power (we were out for 8 days during Ike, though.)

We saw a man in a UK tshirt waiting in line to get off the ship as we were reboarding (in Grand Turk or was it HMC?) and DH complimented him on his shirt... it later occurred to me it might've been you. Was it?

Although our cabin wasn't squeaky the Neptune Lounge certainly was- it was a regular racket in there sometimes!

I've just faxed you a contract to be my agent. Please get me on a ship.

Thanks

We all need to consider that most ships today are longer, wider, and heavier than they were just a few years ago. All the newer ships have large expansion joints that allow them to twist, turn, and bend as they go over swells.
All this movement causes many smaller parts - like bulkhead and deckhead panels, pipes and conduits - to move slightly as the ship flexes.
This is where most of the creaks, chirps, pops, and other strange noises come from.

Newer ships tend to be noisier. Those thousands of parts rubbing against each other take some time to wear down the rougher surfaces and become quieter. And the ship's carpenters need many months to identify the noisier parts and work oon them.

If the ship did not flex, it would eventually break, causing you far more discomfort than those strange noises in the night.

If you travel by air, you are going to have to put up with the sound of jet engines, and air rushing over the fuselage.
If you travel by ship, you are going to have to put up with those strange noises - especially when the ship encounters heavier seas.

We were having moans and groansdisturbing our peace and quiet in our cabin--until my husband went out and repositioned the tables and chairs on our balcony!

I was in an aft cabin on the Eurodam in Nov. and I don't recall any disturbing noises. It was very peaceful and quiet, except for the fabulous sound of the wake while on my balcony.

We had an aft delux corner suite on the January 3rd cruise and no moans or squeeks were heard other then us moaning about having to get out of bed.

Our Eurodam aft cabin was lovely and quiet....except for one night.
Woke to this periodic banging sound ,sounded like a closet door had been left open . Checked our closets all was well. Went muttering back to bed about the silly people next door. Only to find the next morning we had left the safe door open:o:o Heaven knows what our neightbors were thinking about us. I f you are members of CC my sincere apologies:)
