Obviously you could take a taxi, but faster and cheaper are the high-speed trains from Beijing South to Tanggu. Tanggu Station is a short taxi ride from the cruise docks. There are at least 4 trains in each direction, that run direct between the two stations, about an hour total travel time. Fares are around $10-15 pp.

Coming from Beijing, your best option is the direct trains. The first one leaves Beijing South shortly after noon. I think it's # C2272. The other trains depart roughly hourly after that.

Alternatively, Beijing South also has high speed trains departing every 20-30 minutes all day to Tianjin Main Station, where you can get off and transfer to Tanggu. Tianjin to Tanggu trains also depart every 20-30 minutes, but with transfer time this option will take longer; I'd allow 2 hours.

For more info, Google "China Train Schedules". You'll get links to several China websites that have access to current national train schedules (in English).

Gracher,
An alternative to get to port from Beijing is private car. Door to door, hotel to port is appx $50 per person. More expensive than train, but much more convenient.

Do check in with your roll call to see if any is doing the transfer with Beijing services you might be able to join.

We took the high speed train from Beijing South to Tanggu and it's something I would recommend to anybody. The price is about $10US pp, it takes 40 minutes with a short stop at Tianjin. The trains were built in Germany, are very clean, smooth, quiet and fast. Our top speed was over 330 km/h (205 mph), there were workers walking through the train collecting trash and handing out bottled water. I thought the trip was too short.

$50 for a cab ride of 99 miles from Beijing seems too cheap - what company did you get this quoted from please?

Also does anyone know the exact address of the port in Tianjin where you tell the cab driver to go please? Also how much is the cab from Tanggu to the port approx?

A company called Tour Beijing provides the transfer service. I presently am booked with them for just myself and my wife from our Beijing hotel to port. Their cost for 3-6 people in is $250 for the car--this would be $62.50 per person--slightly more than I originally quoted. This is door to door service. Their web site is www.tour-beijing.com (http://www.tour-beijing.com). I also have them picking us up at the airport. They have been very nice to deal with. If you, or anybody else would like to share the ride to the port, it would be nice. Considering the different hotels people may be in, I wouldn't suggest more than one more couple. I don't know if there would be an additional cost to do pick ups at 2 hotels. I could find out, if anybody is interested. We will be in JW Marriott, Beijing.

Fast train to Tianjin about 30 minutes, then take taxi to Xingang port, about 1 hours.
If you have few luggage you can do it by this way.if you have more luggage, private car is more convenient.

So...can you take the fast train from Beijing to Tianjin then a taxi to the port? How long again and how much for the taxi? I'm bouncing around too many numbers.
How much is too much luggage? How about 3 rather large suitcases and a couple carryons? Is that too much for the train? Is the luggage compartment between cars like most trains?

Thanks!

I took a taxi the other direction--from the harbor to Tianjin Station. Originally the driver wanted 300 RMB for the ride to Tianjin, but we finally got him to agree to 200. That's probably still too much. However, as it turned out, it was about a one hour ride to Tianjin Railway Station. If the train schedule to the Tanggu Station works for you, that is the train you want, because it is a lot closer to the harbor.

The amount of luggage you have will not be a problem on the train, as long as you can carry or roll it onto the car yourself. There is a fairly large section at the back of each rail car where luggage can be placed on the floor.

However, too much luggage is a problem for many of the taxis, because most of them are not very large. Three large pieces of luggage and two carry-ons are probably more than most of the taxis can handle. If you have only two passengers, perhaps they can put one of the pieces in the front seat, or if one of the pieces of luggage is not too large, you can put it on your lap. The taxi drivers probably will try to talk you into putting the luggage into a second taxi.

Thanks, j2ink, for your info.

Well, we'll take the train as far as possible and have less of a taxi ride. Can you only book the fast train that day or a day before? That's not a big issue, I guess.
Are there no mini-van style taxis in Beijing? Maybe 2 taxis would have to work...they're not that expensive.

Hi

We have just been to Beijing on nautica and we organised a 22 seater bus for 10 people and luggage from beijing@tour-beijing.com.

It cost us $37 each and we had an English speaking guide on board and we were dropped off at 4 different hotels

We posted on cruise critic that we had 8 spaces and they were all filled within a couple of days

The pick up on the morning was extremely good and professional = highly recommend them

Cheers

This is where my ship docked: Tianjin Xingang (Tianjin Port) -- The address is: Liumi, #129, Xingang Yi Hao Road, Tanggu District, Tianjin - Tel: +8622-25706728

Directions to/from the port are: For those coming from Beijing or Tianjin Urban area, they can take Jinjintang Highway (EASTWARD: about 142 KM), then change to Tang Jin Highway (southward: 4.9 KM), then turn to G103 Road (eastward: 4 km), drive along shanghai avenue (eastward: 4.3 km), then to XinGang Road (442 M), the next is XinGang Yi Hao Road (3.3 KM), eventually you will find passenger terminal at the end of this road.

Your cruise line should have enough information on its web site to determine if it will be docked at the same place.

It would be best if you could find the Chinese characters for the name of the port to show to the taxi driver, since the vast majority cannot read English -- even place names in China.

Here are the Chinese characters for your other possible destinations that I obtained from the internet. I can't guarantee their accuracy, but I believe they came from reliable sources.

Beijing south train station 北京南站
Tanggu Station 塘沽火车站
Tianjin Train Station 天津火车站

Still checking on a bus from Beijing to the cruise port on Sept. 4. Best deal is US$225 or US$275 for a guide with a stop at the Bund in Tanguu. I was wondering - what is the actual boarding process? Do we go to a hotel near the pier, check in then off to the ship? I have read/heard that from a couple people. Just curious.

Hi there!

I'm arriving at Tianjin port (Tanggu) on the 31st of July '10 (Disembarking from 6-night RCC starting in Shanghai). From the port we will continue our trip to Beijing.

I hope to take a taxi to the Tanggu train station, and from there take the train to Beijing.

I found the following information regarding the train-schedule to Beijing from Tanggu:

Train No From Dep. Time To Arr. Time
K7728/K7725 Tanggu 0:59 Beijing West 3:10
C2272 Tanggu 8:29 Beijing South 9:25
K216 Tanggu 8:47 Beijing 11:11
C2274 Tanggu 12:14 Beijing South 13:10
T5684/T5681 Tanggu 13:18 Beijing West 15:18
C2276 Tanggu 13:44 Beijing South 14:40
4420 Tanggu 17:50 Beijing 20:28
C2278 Tanggu 18:14 Beijing South 19:10
1302 Tanggu 19:03 Beijing 21:40
2591/2590 Tanggu 19:46 Beijing 22:10
C2280 Tanggu 19:59 Beijing South 20:55
2602/2603 Tanggu 20:51 Beijing 23:16

(I put it in a HTML-tag because then the columns are aligned better)

Hope that the above information is correct, I found it on:
http://www.diychinatours.com/china-guide/china-travel-tools/china-train-search/
The bad thing about it is that you could not select a date, so i'm not sure if these are valid for July 31.

It would be nice to take the C2274 train.

Does anybody have experiences with taking a taxi from the port to the train station? Are there lots of taxi's waiting?

Greetz from Holland!

Last July when we arrived, there were numerous taxis waiting as we exited the customs area of the passenger terminal. One of the men and his wife approached us and began quoting a price. They were pretty tough negotiators, and we only got them to reduce the price by about 30%. (And they didn't seem happy about it.) We took the taxi all the way to Tianjin, because we were too late for the early train from Tanggu.

In any event, most of the drivers do not speak any English, and you may find that the person you are negotiating with is not the driver. Good luck.

For those cruise travelers who has limit time in beijing, a private transfer to wall and town will be better.

Since there are less taxi around the port now.

most private cars or vans are from beijing. there is a section of wild wall called muoshikou pass. it is totally original and with less tourists. web:
