I'm new to CC and cruising so hopefully this isn't a silly question! In June I have booked my first EVER cruise....and I'm sooooooooo excited. I'm on the Volendam which will be cruising the inner Passage of Alaska.
I'm booked into cabin FF1955 on Dolphin Deck which is a HC cabin as I use a wheelchair. This trip is to celebrate 3 major mile stones:
1) I'll be turning 60!!
2) In June it will be 50 years since I was diagnosed with Rhuematoid
Arthritis!!
3) My dream of going on a cruise is now a reality!!!
I have learned many things from this board...so thank you!
My silly question is: Will there be towel animals on my bed every night (as I think they are adorable?????):cool::cool:

That's a reasonable expectation.
Once in a while the steward misses placing a towel animal on the bed. I have no idea why, as I don't really miss them. It is rare when they miss.
Congratulations on your milestones. You'll love the Volendam/Alaska. I've cruised there four times. The last time was on the Volendam with my granddaughter. We had a blast.

For the time of your life. Alaska is breathtaking and the Volendam is absolutely gorgeous. The Volendam was my first cruise ever which got the addiction going. You are going to have a wonderful time on a beautiful ship and friendly crew.

Welcome to cruise critic. This is a great place to learn a lot about cruising. If you haven't checked out the Alaska board yet, make sure you spend some time there too.
We loved our Alaskan cruise on the Volendam last summer. You are going to love the itinerary of the Volendam this year. It is truly a very scenic itinerary.
As far as the towel animals go, a lot will depend on your cabin steward. Our steward made us two different towel animals on our week cruise. However, my sister's steward had a new one waiting for her EVERY night and hers were much more elaborate than ours. We were both on the Dolphin Deck. I was in an E category and she was in an EE. I think our steward flunked the towel animal making class. :(
I have been reading that cruiselines are trying to get by with fewer cabin stewards. If that is true, then they may not have the time to make towel animals. With all the bargain prices to Alaska this year, we may see cutbacks on many aspects of the cruise. However, with or without your towel animals, you are sure to enjoy your trip to Alaska.

Enjoy your cruise and congratulations on your 3 firsts! We have fond memories of the Volendam cruising the Eastern Caribbean in 2005. Hope you find towel animals every night.

We just left the Volendam in Sydney. She is a beautiful ship and has a great crew, perfect
for a first time cruiser. Had a towel animal every night so I think you can look forward to finding some little critter on your bed. But, remember, HAL has cut back a bit on the crew. Our Steward told us he has 30 (!!) cabins to clean twice a day, don't be disappointed if your's misses a day or two. Welcome to world of cruising, Bon Voyage!

We just got off the Zaandam, and we had towel animals every night, but the first, and the last night. I saved them on my sofa, and they were really cute!

The easiest way to make sure you get adorable towel animals most nights is to drop a hint to your cabin steward. Either tell him on the first night (when you meet him) that its your first cruise and you're so excited because you've seen pictures of your friend's cruises in the past etc etc and how you thought everything was so fascinating, including the towel animals. Or on day two mention that you saw a towel animal your friend got the night before and it was just adorable. Trust me, you'll have a zoo by cruise's end.
Alternately if you find one your first night, leave a little thank you it was so adorable note and you'll get the same results. That worked like a charm for me at Disney World, well that and a nice tip :D I've still got pictures of my zoo - they reposed them for me every day in different places with props and my own stuffed animals (including new ones bought for me by friends we were vacationing with). While Disney may market the magic more - HAL is equally capable of pixie dust and magic!

One small thing to note:
Here's something to keep in mind as you navigate through the ship: Only the most forward elevator goes up to the Crow's Nest. Be sure to check it out for great views from the ship. Since it's on the far end of that looooong corridor from your stateroom you'll might want to start your trip with the nearest elevator to a more visually stimulating deck to work your way forward. ;)
There's also a fully automatic door to the Sports Deck right there by the elevators for the full "Open Air experience" - although it will probably be much 'breezier' than on the Lower Promenade deck, you'll have easy access to both sides of the ship with no doors in between. (All of the doors to the outside teak 'wraparound' deck are double/air lock type and not powered.)
You're going to love cruising, Holland America, the Volendam and her crew!

Anyone who loves towel animals should see this link (http://www.carnival.com/cms/funville/default.aspx?utm_source=carnivalnav) and check out the Towel Animal Theater. Funny stuff!

Thanks, this is great, they have a plan on how to make the Elephant, Rabbit & Pig. Going to try it someday before our cruise so we will be able leave the steward one of our own. (if able to make a decent one lol)

Thank you all so much for answering my post and for tips posted. I loved the link for Animal Theatre and the advice about the elevator. It seems such a long time to wait until June, I'm soooooooo excited and I'm sure I'll be "hooked!"
Happy cruising everyone :)

Also, if you going to the dining room, take the far aft elevators. They will take you right to the dining room.
