View Full Version : Meatloaf on the menu

A few folks have mentioned having both meatload as well as fish & chips on the dining room menu on the last night of a 7-day cruise. Has anyone had a different experience in the past month or two?

If it is, indeed, "leftovers" night, then we'll book in to the Pinnacle that evening.

Two weeks ago, the meatloaf w/red wine sauce was not good at all. And I like most anyone's meatloaf except when I've made it.

It was not on the last night of Westerdam. On that night we had prime rib. It was on some other night and my husband and another gentlemen ordered it and thought it was good. It didn't look good to me.

It was served on the last night of our Alaskan cruise while we were tied up at Victoria. I love meatloaf, but this stuff was bad - easily the worst meal of the cruise (including the brown avocado in the salad that evening).

Shoulda stuck w/ "tradition" and done the Pinnacle that night...:(

Our Maasdam cruise in July had meatloaf on the last night's menu.

Our recent Zuiderdam cruise also had meatloaf on last night's menu.

Remember that the meatloaf is only one of 7 or 8 entre choices. I would never miss the final night in the dining room with my tablemates and waitstaff the last night.

On the Indian Pacific last February from Perth-Sydney (Gold Kangaroo Service) we had an American asking for meatloaf. He was told that they had nothing of that quality in the kitchen and would he be happy with a Braised Duck Leg or a Lamb Rack. He ordered the Lamb Rack and quess what...They gave him a bottle of Merlot on the house.:p Happy sailing...Leslie:)

It's really, really easy to walk thru the DR on the way to the Pinnacle to say good bye to the staff (or do so on the night before). Since we always get a table for 2, tablemates aren't a consideration but neighbors can also be greeted in a quick walk by.....

My thoughts exactly! Keep wondering WHY folks order this AWFUL meatloaf? Eeeeeeeeeeeeek! Does anyone remember what the other entre choices are on "Meatloaf Night"?

On the Ryndam last month, the entrees for the final night were:

Alaska Lingcod Fish and Chips
Roast Leg of Lamb
Roast Beef with Horseradish Crust
Home Style Meatloaf (Red wine sauce and mashed potatoes)
Vegetarian Pot Pie

From the Grill
Mustard and onion grilled chicken breast
Halibut Petso Lemon sauce

I tried the fish and chips from room service that night. It was mostly fried batter with very little fish.

Wasn't it only last month that someone, with great accolades, posted a menu from the "grand old days" of cruising? I distinctly remembered that menu having both macaroni and cheese and sardines offered. :p

I do find it amusing that meat loaf is on the menu. Perhaps the powers to be think it will help to ease us back into the realm of reality offering it on the last night? Will macaroni and cheese be next along with american chop suey?

Perhaps we can have some fun and develop a final night cruise menu, designed to help us all realize that the days of gourmet food and elegant service are drawing to a close... suggestions?

Meat Loaf
Mac and cheese
american chop suey
chipped beef over toast
tuna noodle casserole
salmon-p-wiggle

I'm sure we can think up some more.. then we can ship our suggestions off to HAL and suggest they include our new menu in their SOE program!! (all we have to remember is the good old "school lunch program" to bring back memories of some horrible food!!)

Disclaimer...this is all tongue-in-cheek ... and I pray mightily that HAL never does take this suggestion to heart!!

Mac and Cheese would be all too easy---it's already on the children's menu! (It's pretty good, too.)
It would be a simple matter to print it on the adult menu and not create any additional work in the galley.

Oops. There I go giving 'em ideas.

There's nothing like a nice lime jello with mandarin oranges and Miracle Whip.

Just got back today from Zuiderdam. Yep. Meatloaf and fish and chips (mostly batter, as previously stated.) Meatloaf was just, well, meatloaf. Prime Rib was thinly sliced. For breakfast this morning, it was corned beef patties and a fried egg. No Eggs Benedict, and we had to tackle a waiter for coffee. Of course by Friday evening they already have your comment cards, so they can serve up the "Gruel and Swill Medley" or whatever they want. :p

But still this could not diminish our enthusiastic recommendation of the Zuiderdam. We had a wonderful time, service was great, the ship is beautiful and the food was terrific. I'll try to write some more in a little while.

On the Eggs Benedict controversy, I read Roboat's post to be saying that they did not have EB on the last morning (when things are usually rushed) and not that they never had EB on the whole cruise. I could be wrong, of course, but in this post he was talking about 'this morning'. Hopefully he will explain before the EB fan club gets all upset. ;)

NancyOh, sorry. They DID offer Eggs Benedict for breakfast most days, but not on the final breakfast, which does not seem unreasonable to me, due to the incredible amount of work required to swap out the load of passengers. Overall, the food at all meals was good to wonderful.

One of our tablemates ordered the meatloaf last January on Zaandam. He sent it back and ordered something that he had tasted from someone elses plate. You would think the meatloaf would be dropped from the menu after all of the complaints.

What is 'salmon-p-wiggle'?

The mac and cheese should specify what brand being use. Hopefully it will be that orange looking Kraft to satisfiy those who Hal is trying to entice book.

Salmon-p-wiggle is a new one me. I am curious to hear the description.

One possible reason for why Eggs Benedict is not offered on the morning of disembarkation is that if the Vessel Sanitation Program people would happen to board the ship for an inspection, they would take points off the ship's score if they find the eggs being served were not thoroughly cooked. And, who wants hard poached eggs?

Peggy Sue
October 24th, 2004, 06:37 PM
Question asked..what is Salmon P Wiggle....

Canned Salmon, in a cream sauce with peas.... served over toast. It tastes as bad as it looks. Could be found on school lunch menus back in the 60's - Vermont.

Mac & Cheese .. of course, it has to be the "orange" variety..it wouldn't be considered gourmet unless it came from powdered cheese!!

It's not the item on the menu but the preparation of the item. If poorly prepared, poorly cook, or poorly presented lobster or steak is preferable to you, over well prepared, correctly cooked, and delightfully presented meatloaf then you prefer form over substance. No decent chef would chose the former over the later. Those that would do not know food but do know knobbishness. Some very good restaurants "feature" meatloaf that includes the Icon Grill in Seattle. Try it the night before your next Alaska Cruise. :p
