Looking for ideas on transportation from Rome to port in September 2009.
Has anyone taken the train which is definetly the cheapest way, or is it a hassle with luggage?
One suggestion was renting a car from the airport for a liesurely drive to port. Anyone done this?
Other option is of course limo or mini bus with no hassle but the most expensive.
Appreciate any ideas on the subject.

We used Rome Cabs and our driver was Stefano. We shared rides and tours with members of our Roll Call. Since you are new to the board. Go over to Roll Calls and find your sailing. Talk to some of the other passengers and see what they are doing. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86
I do not recommend the train. #1, it is a hassle with luggage. You sometimes have to walk up many steps, across the tracks, and down the steps again. #2 - The trains go on strike several times a year and you will not have any warning.
I suppose a car rental would be nice, but the road from the airport to the port is all highway. Really not very scenic at all. I just wouldn't want to drive in a foreign country.

I suggest you sign up on your Roll Call and see what others are doing. You could possibly share a vehicle and save some money. You should also check the ports-of-call forums. I'm sure there are lots of suggestions there for car&driver services.
The only time we've done that trip we had a HAL pre-cruise excursion that included a bus ride to the ship, so I can't help you from experience.

I will second romecabs and Stefano he is very reasonable by limo standards he is charging my DH and myself 45 euro to go from Rome to Civi port and then is picking us up after the cruise for another stay over and tour of the Vatican and the museum which he also set up for us. He will give you his cell phone # and you can talk to him directly, which is what I did. After some studying he was the cheapest limo type service and the more of you there are the cheaper the rate gets pp. When are you sailing??

chloes nana - That's what we did! However, I am confused on your transfer amount. That's a deal! Are you sure that's what Stefano is charging you? The website says 130 euro for up to two passengers from Rome to Civitavecchia. We paid 170 euro for 6 persons from the airport to port. More expensive on the way back to Rome, because of the tour.
I forgot to include the link to Rome Cabs. :D

Hi Everyone, We took the train from Rome Airport to the port. We might have had to change at the major train staion in Rome. It only took us an hour to get to the port. The train had luggage racks. From the train station at the port it's a 10-15 minute walk or you can take a 5 minute cab ride from the station. We took the 5 minute cab ride. You can see the ship from the train station. We did this RT and it was very inexpensive. Have a nice weekend everyone, George

According to Stefano's letter, the 45 euro is only for taking you from a Rome hotel and to the airport after your cruise and Rome tour. He says nothing about taking your from the airport, and to the port of Civitavecchia.

the pre cruise transport is part of the package I set up through my TA. Since I did a large package, before and after tours, the total for each transport was 45 euro. That is what the (discounted) in parenthtesis is about.:o

did the train...its a commuter stop so lots of trains...we did the one where we got let off on the inside track..had to carry luggage down stairs then up to go under the tracks to the station...apparently you can avoid this if you take a train that ends at Civattavechia..or however you spell that....train is from the main station in Rome (termini) but its on a track off in a corner....its numbered so its easy enough to find but you can't see it at first...and don't forget to put your ticket in the box thing to validate it....
its about 9 euros if I remember right...way less the the cost of a transfer or a taxi

Lucky you! We didn't get any such deal or discount. We had 6 on one tour, and 7 on the post cruise tour. We did only have to pay the 45 euro to go from hotel back to the airport, though.
Oh yeah...be prepared for another driver beside Stefano. We had one driver to pick us up at the airport, and another take us back to the airport. Stefano was the driver from the port and for our tour of Rome.:) However, he left us in the hands of another guide for the Vatican and she was wonderful!

If you will land at Fiumincino Airport, Rome, there is a train, the Leonardo Express, (costs 11 euro) that takes you into Rome's main railway station, called Termini. Take a cab to your hotel from there.
To get to Civitavecchia from Rome, there is a train from Termini to Civit. You can then walk to the ship or take a taxi.
some one forward this this one day itinerary, can be useful, were going to check it out;):
From Termini train station, take Metro Line B (Blue) Southbound (Laurentina) two stops to the Colosseo (Colosseum) stop.
Visit the Colosseum and the Forum. English language tours with Italian docents are available; audiophones for self-guided tours are available at most tourist sites.
Go back to the Colosseo Metro stop and take Line B (Blue) Northbound (Rebibbia) two stops back to Termini. When you transfer at Termini you go from one line to the other and don’t pay another fare. Change trains to Line A (Red) Northbound (Battistini) six stops to the Ottaviano/San Pietro stop. Exit station and walk south on Via Ottaviano, through Piazza del Risorgamente to Piazza San Pietro (St. Peter’s Square)
Visit St. Peter’s Square (San Pietro) and St. Peter’s Cathedral. The Pieta is located in the Cathedral as well as many other outstanding pieces- there is no charge for St. Peter’s, but you do have to go through a security check. Note: Perhaps the best gelato in Rome can be found at Old Bridge Gelateria, which is across the street from where people line up to get into the Vatican Museum. The Vatican Museum houses the Sistine Chapel, which is magnificent. It will take probably at least 2-3 hours to make this visit due to the lines, so you may want to keep that in mind while deciding whether or not you want to include it in your itinerary.
Walk southeast on Via della Conciliazione (a major avenue) to the Tiber River. Cross the Tiber River on one of the bridges. We recommend the Ponte Sant Angelo or “Bridge of Angels,” which has several Bernini statues of angels on it, which crosses the Tiber at the Castel Sant Angelo. Continue on Corso Vittorio Emanuele (another major avenue). Take a left (north) on Corso Rinascimento to Piazza Navona. Many fountains, artists and other artisan booths are found in this piazza, which is one of the best known in Rome.
From Piazza Navona walk east to the Pantheon. This was originally a temple to all the Roman gods, which was later taken over by the Christians. Its dome with its open oculus is famous. Raphael is buried here.
From the Pantheon, walk east (crossing a major avenue – Via del Corso) to Trevi Fountain. Trevi Fountain is the most famous fountain in Rome. If you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain you will return to Rome some day, according to local lore.
From Trevi Fountain, walk north to the Spanish Steps (Spagna) . Caution: The Spanish Steps area is where all the top fashion houses’ stores are located.
Near the the base of the Spanish Steps, look for a Metro station sign. Take Metro Line A (Red) Southbound (Anagnina) two stops to the Termini station.

Rome to Civit via romashuttle.com - 8 people [from Roll Call] picked up at 4 different hotels €200 [would have been €160 if gathered from same location].
Same service - FCO to Rome hotel €40

Many of us have covered this topic (too many times) on the Port/Europe/Med board. In fact, if you look at that board you will see several current discussions. We talk about trains, the free port shuttles, taxis, limos, etc etc.
