We are going on the Rio to Manaus cruise on 02/14/04. Oceania representatives were giving out wrong info for a while. You do need a visa for entering
Brazil from the U.S.
But are Yellow Fever and any other shots recommended, since we are going up the Amazon River?

You should check this site. It has the up to date info on requirements from health department for your cruise.

Definitely get a yellow fever shot! Before I went to Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,in 1998,I had to have yellow fever innoculations.Don't remember how much it cost but it is well worth the price,as this disease is a killer and is spread by infected mosquitoes. The shots last for 10 years. The yellow card can fit inside your passport, secured by an elastic band,so that they can both be presented at Customs etc.

The website that ClaudiaF posted is excellent and has lots of info.I am assuming your date for sailing is for 2005 not 2004 as posted?Because the sooner you get this done the better as it takes a while for the vaccine to be absorbed.

In the meantime, have a safe and happy cruise.

Terri;)

Brazil, in the past, has been very fussy about Visas.

We were on a Royal Princess cruise Mar 98, Buenos Aires to Barcelona, that was stopping in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and boarding was denied to a party of 6 that did not have Brazilian Visas, even though the ship would be in transit. Our pre-cruise documents did indicate that a Brazilian Visa was required.

We were later told that Brazil would fine the ship if they knowingly made a port call with passengers without Visas.

On a Manaus to Florida cruise, Pacific Princess (old) way back in Dec 91, we had to have yellow fever shots and some anti-malarial tablets. At this late date, I don't recall whether or not we had to have a typhus update.

Visas are a must for Brazil.

Phil & Edith from Phoenix. We are on this cruise also.
There are three different Malaria pills on the CDC site for Brazil.
CDC also notes that there have been a few FATALITY problems with yellow fever vaccinations for those over age 65. You can check with your own doctor, but I suspect he will rely on the CDC site also since yellow fever is not a US problem and few doctors here have ever had any contact or education concerning it.
We probably will NOT get the yellow fever vaccine, and rely on "OFF", long sleeve shirts and sprays to keep oursleves and the cabin mosquito free.

We are on the same cruise as you. The CDC cite did recommend Yellow Fever and Malaria preventatives. They have one of the resistent malarias.

My husband and I are puzzled about what address to use for the ship in Rio, or Brazil for the VISA. We want to send it in, but so far we can't figure that
out? Anyone out there know the answer?
