Booked our first HAL cruise, RCCl many times! I have been reading many reviews and it seems that motion sickness comes up alot. I'm starting to worry..is there something about this particular ship that is making more people motion sick than others? I've been on many cruises and have only had issues a couple of times in rough seas..am I worrying over nothing? We are very excited to try HAL, definitely wanted something a little more upscale! Thanks!

HAL's Vista ships are no more prone to rockin' and rollin' than any of the others. I suspect you see more commentary about Zuiderdam because there are more pax new to cruising on the Vista ships?

I sailed on the Z a year ago. My first cruise since 1993.
I did not get seasick!
I used the wrist bands the first 2 days, then took them off & was fine.
We had some pretty awful weather, and 16-foot seas. No problem!

Some people have written about vibration on the Z, but I did not notice.

BTW, Lisa, I used to live in Hudson, Ohio!

I have been on at least 35 cruises and the Zuiderdam was the smoothest ship I have ever experienced. It rides really well.

Didn't have any problems on our last cruise on Z in August. Great choice of a ship.:)

Thanks so much!!! I feel much better! I was really starting to worry. Another thing that was bothering me is that we've done the Southern route for the past few years and was thinking that maybe the waters for the eastern route are more rough than southern and maybe it isn't the ship, but the ocean. Hopefully it'll be fine..I'll take precautions anyway. Just wondering from you seasoned HAL's..what's been the average age on this ship? We are young 40's and hopefully we'll fit in. We aren't crazy disco 2 o'clock in the morning people..more like a great meal, drinks, a little gambling kinda people. Hubbie likes cigar lounges too..is there one? Thanks again!!!!

you'll fit into the HAL crowd nicely given your likes/dislikes. The Zuiderdam is a beautiful ship (was on her in April). Have NEVER gotten sea sick on a HAL cruise...(although we did get terribly sea sick on a North Atlantic cruise once to Nova Scotia and would never want that experience again! ...but it wasn't a HAL ship). The only (very minor) criticism of the Zuiderdam would be that we felt more vibrations in the dining room by comparison to other cruises. But it wasn't something that would deter us from cruising again on her or her sister ships...in fact...I will be sailing on the Oosterdam with friends Nov. 7...it's their first cruise...and I would only take them on the best!!! Have fun on HAL...you will enjoy their attention to service quality.

I get sea sick on everything. I was moderately sick on the Zuiderdam in June but compared to other things I have been on, it wasn't that bad. When people worry because they hear I got sick, I remind them had I got very sick on the paddle wheel type boat at the lagoon in Disney World. It seems to be personal sensitivity and not the ship that makes the difference.

I was on the Zuiderdam in June and did not experience any vibration on the ship and did not suffer from being seasick. Had a very smooth sail.

I am quite prone to motion sickness. I got a tiny bit sick in 1991 on the first night of our first cruise. That was on the Westerdam--the last incarnation, not the newest one. In 1992, we hit quite rough seas on a Princess ship on the way to Alaska. I was mildly sick. The Zuiderdam is easily the nicest riding ship I have ever sailed. (We've been on six ships now.) We had 'rough' seas much of the time--according to the Navigator's Log, 7.5 to 12 feet--yet I hardly noticed except one night, and I was in bed already. I'm sure you'll do fine. (I never use anything for motion sickness. It all makes me too sleepy to enjoy my trip.) I'd sail the Zuiderdam again any time!
