We are sailing on the Westerdam in January and am wondering if Holland America still offers the desert buffet one night. It has been around 5 years since our last cruise and we really enjoyed the presentation. Any updated information would be appreciated.

Just returned from the Oosterdam today and they had a chocolate buffet. Chances are you will see it on the Westie.

They had it on the Zuiderdam this past September as well. Only ... it wasn't offered at night. It was mid-day and I preferred it that way since I am not much of a night person.
Unfortunately, I have to be very careful with chocolate ... migranes ... but I still had a great time! What a feast for the eyes! :) The presentation was beautiful ... and I took dozens of pictures.
Blue skies ...

We are sailing on the Westerdam in January and am wondering if Holland America still offers the desert buffet one night. It has been around 5 years since our last cruise and we really enjoyed the presentation. Any updated information would be appreciated. We were on the Westerdam a few weeks ago and the Desert Buffet was held 'outside' on the Lido, close to the pool. We had never seen it done this way on previous cruises, but it was very nicely done - and scumptious. The lighting was kept low which really enhanced the beautiful ice-carvings which were displayed on specially designed stands with lights below.
You will just love the ship - she is stunning.
Happy Cruising.

The dessert extravaganza is no longer exclusively chocolate:eek: , but there is still a good selection of that nectar of the gods:D .
The desset buffet is held for the enjoyment of all. They even have sugar-free choices:) !

I was on the Zuiderdam in June and the Chocolate Extravaganza was at 3p.m in the upper dining room. My wife was highly disappointed for the lack of photo ops at the affair and would have rather went to a midnight buffet that we have attended on other cruise lines. The Extravanganza was nice but if we hadn't attended it would been no great loss.

Thanks everyone for the information. I am really happy it will be during the day because it was hard waiting until midnight to view this wonderful display. I can't wait for our group to experience this cruise. Can't wait to get my docs..

Honestly, we were a bit disappointed with the Oosterdam. Perhaps we are spoiled having been on Celebrity / RCI so often. The ship is beautiful, but the staff could use some training on customer service. The food also was not spectacular. However, I must make mention of the incredible bedding - Serta perfect sleeper with 300 + thread count sheets. Best sleep on the high seas! As with any cruise, it's what you make of it. If you want to relax and just enjoy your surroundings, it's a good ship.

Statendam - 21 days - no chocolate buffet.
Instead there was the chef's creations one evening from 10:30 til midnight.
And another evening was the Halloween desert extravaganza held from 10:30 til midnight.

I was on the O last week and the Dessert Extravaganza was from 10:30PM - midnight in the Lido. It was good but not the extravaganza I expected.

I have actually missed the chocolate buffets on both my previous cruises - on the Ryndam 4 years ago because I could never keep awake and was still full from our late seating at dinner. On the NCL Dawn in 2003 we missed it because they held it during the afternoon when we were docked at Tortola and we didn't make it back in time. If they're going to have them in the afternoon, at least they should make it on an at-sea day! - Jane

For excellent chocolates, try the Exploer's Lounge after around 9:00pm. The best trouffles (sp?), choc cov strawberries, etc....
Happy cruising....

Taking pictures of it means that there are no calories, right??? I love taking pics of it but I'm diabetic so I can't indulge too much. But I do love the way it looks. Do they have sugar free there too? Thiswill be my first Hal one. On my other cruises they had a very small amount of sugar free there.

These are delectable Dutch cookies with a caramel center that one places
atop their mug of coffee or tea causing the caramel center to melt in your mouth. Yum! Can I expect stroopenwafels on my first HAL cruise?

Here's a link to some pictures from our New England - Canada cruise on Rotterdam VI last year. The album includes a few pictures from the "Chocolate Buffet".

We had a great chocolate buffet late at night on Royal Caribbean out by the pool with the band playing and lots of dancing. The only problem was trying to sleep after all that caffeine. We were watching movies until 4 in the morning. Since I don't normally have much caffeine in my diet, and certainly not late at night, this was the problem for me. But it was worth it! :D
