Has anyone done this before. Any problems with ships security or customs. Plan on bringing one for May 5th Statendam out of Vancouver. Will not fill it with candies until onboard. Comments please:)

Anything you carry aboard the ship must go through the x-ray machine. If it will fit through the typical airport scanner, it will fit in HAL's.

Bringing it on board may not be a problem, but there could be a problem with blindfolding players and giving them a big stick to swing around. Where you plan on breaking it may be the deal-breaker.

Finding a decent pinata in Canada------I had to chuckle. A Canadian might have an equal amount of trouble finding a decent hockey stick in Mexico.;)

I seriously doubt if they will let you hang a pinata in the Crow's Nest and swing sticks at it.

Remember that there will be other people in the Crow's Nest besides your group.

Keep in mind a 'moving ship'. Might not be a real good idea to have blindfolded people trying to keep their footing if the ship is moving, particularly if there is a bit of motion of the ocean.

I certainly would not want to be in the Crows Nest during the pinata party. If you do go ahead with this, perhaps you need to clear it with the ship ahead of time, and see if you can reserve a portion of the Crows Nest and have the crew forewarn the other passengers.

Have you thought of having the pinata in the privacy of your own stateroom if you have a suite?

Is there a reason for you wanting to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Are there other ways you can celebrate onboard and still respect the other passengers rights?

Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.Cinco de Mayo is not an obligatory federal holiday in Mexico. While Cinco de Mayo has limited or no significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. However, a common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16, which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

If it were me, I would go ahead and take the pinata with me. Then work with the crew to find a suitable space, day and sea condition to have your Cinco de Mayo. Go for it! A pinata doesn't cost that much (at least here in Arizona) and if the proper time didn't arise for the party, not any loss. ----Penny

There are many different types of pinata's..Not all pinata's are broken with a stick, by a blindfolded person..Pull string pinata's are plentiful & don't require sticks to break them..

IMO it's not appropriate for us to pass judgment on the OP's desire to take a Pinata on board.. All she asked was if anyone had done it before & were there any problems with security etc..It's not up to us to decide where, when & if the pinata will be permitted or not...Also none of us know if she has made prior arrangements for a privatre party in the Crows nest..

Kyana..Since none of the posters have ever brought a pinata on board, suggest you contact Ship's Services to see if the ship will permit it..We don't know the type you plan on using & you want to be sure you will not have problems with Security..

Also agree with Nutrioso...You should plan to work with the crew to find a suitable place to have your Cinco de Mayo party with a pinata...You might find pinata's are less expensive at one of these sites:

I learned something today. Having been born in New Mexico and lived in New Mexico, Arizona and California my entire life I had never seen or heard of a pinata that was not hung then broken with a stick by a blind folded child so the candy would spill out. In looking at the sites provided I am amazed.

Further to my post re Pull string pinata's: Forgot to mention that this site which has many Mexican Pinata's, also has for $2.00 plus a conversion kit to make their regular pinata's pull string ones..I plan on buying one for my next lanai party..

At this site this is one of the rules for pull string pinata's:

Instructions for Pull Pinata Party Game:
The pull pinata is constructed like a regular pinata with a few exceptions. First, it has a secret trap door. Secondly, it has 20 to 30 ribbons that hang from the bottom. Only one "lucky" ribbon, however, is attached to the trap door that opens when the ribbon is pulled -- allowing all the goodies to spill out. All the other ribbons are lightly attached and pull off when tugged.

Enjoy your cruise & please do let us know if ship services approved it & how your party went..

Just curious -- I wasn't the first person here to mention about the sticks -- so why quote only me??

That's true, you were not the only one to mention sticks, but you were the first poster to say you seriously doubt that HAL would allow her to hang one in the Crow's Nest with people swinging sticks..Then you went on to point out that there will be others using the Crow's Nest..I could not quote everyone's post & your's just happened to mention all three things in a concise way...1) Hal probably would not allow it in the Crows Nest 2) People swinging Sticks
3) Other passengers using the Crows nest..

I truly apologize if you thought I was singling you out.:o.Did not mean to do that, but don't understand why so many on this thread passed judgment when the OP asked a simple question.. She only asked if someone had taken one aboard & was there a problem with Security..Then she went on to say she might have trouble finding one in Canada, so I gave her a few web sites to check out....

People just assumed that she was going to hang a pinata with blindfolded passengers swinging large sticks, but no one knows for sure..Maybe the OP arranged for a section of the Crows Nest for her private party..She could be a group leader of a large group..None of us actually know the facts about her Party, the Crows Nest, or what type of pinata she is planning to use...JMO...

Cheers..:)Betty

I am shocked how much response this thread has brought. I did know of the ribbon pulls to drop the candy, and I wouldn't want to startle a lot of passengers with a Panco Villa contingent taking over the Crowsnest. Just wanted to add some colour for the 5th of May no violence intended. This ranks up their with the suggestion of a bathrobe party in the Neptune Lounge. THank you all for your imput and as said on Laugh In "VERY INTERESTING"
