Going on our first Holland America cruise on the Zuiderdam on Wednesday. The wife's 50th, and our 25th anniversary. We are now booked in a Superior suite on the Navigation deck (ss8065). Recieved an E-mail from Holland America yesterday offering an upgrade to the Deluxe Suite for 199.00 per person. Is it worth it?? Any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks.

YES! Take it! Fast, before others grab it.
You will love the extra space, and the extra amenities (breakfast in Pinnacle Grill; free laundry and dry cleaning; Neptune Lounge and its concierges; etc etc).
$199pp is a good price for that upsell.
Let us know what you decided.

OMG YES!! That is a great price for the upgrade. Since it is celebrating two big events I would definitely go for it :) Although word of warning it will spoil you but take it from someone that has lived the suite life for a long time it is not that hard to to adjust down so one can continue cruising ;)

We are leaning towards taking the upgrade. Can't do it till tomorrow though, and thought I'd see what experienced HAL cruisers thought.

Yes, take it!
We were booked into a SS for our cruise on Noordam and I tried to pick a room (it's under the Lido deck) that would be far away from the noise of chairs being scraped above us. We were offered a paid upgrade to an SA across from the NL - we took it. Well, our tablemates at dinner got our old room because they had an SY guarantee and they told us they often heard chairs from up above - must have been from the aft Lido deck because we were to be under the restaurant. They even took us to see "our old room".
I never regretted taking that upgrade at all!

REMEMBER:
Never put your spouse in a cabin you do not plan on purchasing the rest of your life.....
The Neptune lounge and it sservices make the upgrade worth it.

That's an awesome offer! Take it and as others said, RUN fast! You said you were already in an SS with an assigned cabin. Did you book that particular SS cabin when you first booked the cruise? Or, did you originally book a GTY and were given the assigned SS recently? You will love the Deluxe Suite. I would love to get an offer such as yours!

And you will love the Neptune Lounge.

As others have said - TAKE IT!!!
Just remember though - and take this from an old grocer - the easiest thing to spoil is a WOMAN, so be prepared to step up to a deluxe suite in the future as well.

Oh, my....yes, YES, YES!
Jim does have a point. You may never want to cruise in a "lesser" cabin. But, still, I'd do this for such a special occasion.
Like KK, I love breakfast in the Pinnacle.
If you haven't already read about the perks of a Deluxe Suite, here they are, from the HAL website:
Complimentary laundry, pressing and dry cleaning throughout your cruise
Premium duvet, oversize bath towels and soft, cotton bathrobes and slippers
Gorgeous corsages and boutonnieres for the first formal night
Hors d'oeuvres served before dinner each evening on request
Binoculars and umbrellas for your use on the cruise
Cocktail party with ship officers
Priority boarding for tender ports of call
Special disembarkation service
Priority dining and seating requests
Exclusive daily breakfast service for suite guests only
High tea service in suite on request
A special Suite guest lunch event on cruises over 7 days in length
A very special amenity exclusively for guests cruising in a Deluxe Verandah Suite or Penthouse Verandah Suite, the industry-leading Neptune Lounge features a private place to relax, socialize with other suite guests and enjoy the personalized service of a concierge. The fleet-wide lounges provide worktables, large screen television, library, sofas and chairs, refreshments throughout the day and wi-fi for a small charge. One-Touch 24-hour Concierge Service is available when the Neptune Lounge is closed.

We are in an outside view cabin for an August sailing to Alaska. Is it likely that we will be offered an upgrade at some nominal price? Would the upgrade be to another cabin in the same class (outside view) or could it be to a higher class (verandah)? After reading a lot on this board, I think we might prefer to have a verandah cabin, but don't want to pay premium price for an upgrade if an offer is forthcoming. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You won't be offered an upsell to a "better" outside. You might be offered an upsell to a verandah, however...
I'm far from an expert on this, but it seems to me balcony cabins on Alaska sailings almost always sell out by final payment date.
My perception is the upsell offers are more common for those booked in a balcony cabin, offering to go to a superior or deluxe suite.
If there are balcony cabins still available on your sailing, I suggest you price the difference now. I'd be inclined to pay the difference....but at least you'll know what you would have to pay, to judge if the offer is a deal.

Diane,
Just booked a suite and was given that room 3 or 4 weeks ago. It was an upgrade as far as I know.

Wow! Even Billy Mays would try and sell you that deal! Your SY is a very nice cabin with a telephone concierge service but with this offer I would pick the upgrade.

LMHSRN-- I think what he meant was he originally booked an SZ or SS or SY Guarantee. About 3 or 4 weeks ago he was assigned cabin 8065 and was just offered the upsell to the SA.

We love the Neptune Lounge! Here's some pictures of the NL on the Noordam. I have pictures of the NL on the Zuiderdam, but I don't have those handy. The Noordam and Zuiderdam NL were pretty much the same, from what I remember...

When we were checking in, once we got to the main doors, we were given a tag to wear (this allowed us to be the first on the ship). We arrived around 10:30 and were dropping our carry-on bags in the Neptune Lounge by 11:15 or so.
Enjoy! :)

Those photos are excellent and should be required viewing for those thinking about a Deluxe Verandah Suite and wondering about the Neptune Lounge. Please keep your link handy for the future threads asking about Neptune....
The problem is that now I'm going to go fix egg salad, because those sandwiches reminded me how goooooood it was ... :o
