I thought I saw something on here about towels for shore excursions that they have a stack when you depart the ship or something but the "Know before you go" booklet says to ask your cabin attendant for towels to take ashore. Does anyone know which is correct? Also are there towels by the pool or are pool towels in our stateroom?

Sailiing on Ryndam, April 24. Had a guarantee H and just got cabin assignment, upgraded to a C on Lower Promalade Deck.

For every port there was a large container of towels as you get off the ship, you give your cabin number and take one each. :)

We always take towels from the stack at the gangway ... we never have been asked for our cabin number. Perhaps it depends on the ship, itinerary, hotel manager.

Nor have I ever been limited to one towel.

Correct ... they don't care how many you take, within reason, as long as you bring them back to the ship.

And to the OP ... yes, there are towels in the pool areas, and containers there in which to place your used ones.

Last month on Westerdam they either had attendants handing out towels...no cabin number required, or a stack on a cart from which to take towels--as many as necessary or one could carry. The towels were just about right and we brought a rolling duffel on our trip just for the purpose of being able to easily carry our "gear" for the excursions.

We did not even need to be on a "HAL" excursion to get towels. It was a nice touch that they treated us like adults and trusted us to have the responsibility to return the towels.

On our Prinsedam Float in Nov and our Maasdam Float in Feb we took a mesh backpack that we use for our snorkel gear and would stuff towels in that. We picked them up from a large stack that was on a table just before you get off the ship. We were not asked for a cabin number. When returning, just past the Xray machine they had a large container to drop your used towel in - very easy. I have heard that some of the other cruise lines ask for cabin numbers or may even charge extra. As I recall, on the Prinsendam and Maasdam the "beach" towels were a pale blue and the pool towels were a dark blue.

Use of the towel bin leaving ship is very useful especially on the Caribbean cruises. We always take two as that is what is needed at the beach or for snorkeling. Even if someone hands them out, then ask for two - they will give them to you. Please remember to bring them back to the ship as it is an honor system and that keeps price of cruises down. There is no need to ask and wait for cabin attendant - that just slows you down and creates stress.
The light blue are for shore and the dark blue generally are by pool as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I don't know if I am remembering correctly or not....but in Feb. on our Hawaii cruise on the Zaandam, I believe they left a beach towel in our room with our towel animal and the little canvas bags on the night before our first port. Anyone else remember it like that? I think they were pale blue towels, not the stripey ones they give out by the pools.

When we returned to the ship we were never asked if we had towels, of course we returned the ones we had taken, but EVERYONE was asked for their cabin # when they took them. This was on the Eurodam in the Caribbean, perhaps they do things differently than most of you posting have experienced.
