Was anyone on the December 20, 2008 cruise aboard the Eurodam to the Eastern Caribbean (Christmas cruise on Eurodam) diagnosed with Klebsiella pneumonia?
My partner developed a cough a while after returning home. The cough persisted and worsened. He is in the hospital tonight with a diagnosis by swab and biopsy of Klebsiella pneumonia (Friedlander's pneumonia). This is an especially nasty form of pneumonia for reasons listed in sources such as medlineplus.gov and Wikipedia. It can be transmitted in crowded places, and the coughing beginning after the cruise is one possibility we have considered.
I do not wish to be an alarmist or denigrate HAL. I want to find out if in fact other people were diagnosed so we can determine the source of this infection. If you don't have it by now, don't worry about it. It strikes middle-aged men with underlying health issues such as alcoholism. However, there were a lot of middle-aged men having a good time with alcohol on the cruise.
If you have any information, please contact me at vesuvian @ gmail.com. Again, I do not want to sound as if I am bad-mouthing the cruise or Holland America Lines. I look forward to another cruise with them. I am simply seeking possible answers to what may be causing this disease, and to alert passengers who have had a nagging and productive cough since January to visit a physician for an exam.
This is not information that I would be able to obtain from Holland America Line or I would have started there first. This group is more likely to speak up about their experiences than public relations staff at HAL is to talk about health conditions leading to prior cruise ship infections.
Regards,
John
