Are you charged for the pastries or just the coffee selectons?
On Celebrity I would get my pastries at the cafe (no charge) and take them to the dining room.
Thanks

Pastries are free at the E.C. if you buy a coffee drink of any type. I don't think you can buy them if you don't get a drink.

Pastries are included with the purchase of a drink; they are not available for purchase alone.
Also, there is a point in the afternoon when they are no longer available at all. :( It's sometime before I want a hot chocolate.

It's worse than that though, Mary Ellen. At some time the pastries that are still there are taken away!
And you don't even get a rain-check! :(

I have seen pastries until late afternoon -- and have seen them replaced a few times during the day -- especially on sea days.

Not late enough, KK!
You're at dinner when I want my late-afternoon snack.

Hi Ruth

Right!!

You know something that I thought strange on our recent cruises??

They offered cookies to go with your coffees -- and you can get them in the Lido all afternoon!! Why buy a coffee just to get a cookie?? Noticed that the platter was usually full all afternoon as well.

Thanks everyone.
I was hoping it would be like Celebrity. You didn't have to purchase coffee to enjoy the fresh pastries. :(

I have never purchased a coffee or tea at the Explorations Cafe and have often helped myself to a cookie if some were available. No one has ever said a word about not doing so. I thought the pastries were "free" to whomever wanted them.

Since the pastries are in a glass case -- how were you able to "help yourself"?

The cookies were on a platter sitting on top of the counter. I never have had any of the pastries in the glass case.

There are more pastries than I could ever eat in the Lido. For that matter, I could never order all the pastries available in the dining room. All I asked was about the pastries at the explorations cafe hoping there were on the same level as I have experienced on other cruiselines. My past experiences were that those were far superior than at other venues. Maybe they are the same at every location on HAL. This will be my first cruise with them, I just wanted to get a little info.

Some of the pastries at Explorations Cafe are different than available in other venues on the ship.

We've ordered coffees but never had any of the pastries though we see them in the case and they look delicious. :)

That is strange -- having sailed on quite a few different ships I have never seen a platter of cookies sitting on top of the counter in the Explorations Cafe.

If you are sailing on the Noordam, you might consider buying a coffee at the Java Cafe -- there they also have the pastries as well as wraps and egg salad sandwiches in the afternoon.

On both the Noordam and Westerdam there was not a lot of variety of pastries in the Explorations Cafe -- the only thing you could get there different was the cinnamon buns -- otherwise the cookies, cakes and donuts are all the same as in the Lido.

Thanks again to Cruise Critic! I didn't know that the pastries are free with coffee in the Explorations Cafe. Never saw a sign indicating this, and definitely was never told this when buying coffee. I learn something new here every day! :)

.

Are the egg salad sandwiches like those we get in Neptune Lounge.

I remember seeing luscious looking lemon pastries, mini pecan tarts and chocolate whatevers that all looked delicious in Explorations Cafe. I used my best will power to resist. :)

I don't remember what Eurodam Exploration Cafe offered for pastries. I didn't pay attention, I guess.
