Packing for flight to CPH Thursday for Eurodam cruise (Norwegian Fiords & Scotland) and, once again, wrestling with security rules, which seem to change with every trip, and are subject inspectors' whims. Two years ago, leaving CHP, my friend had toenail clippers tossed out - apparently only fingernail clippers allowed. Her lipstick was okay - my Chapstick wasn't. Last year no problem IAD, FRA or Budapest airports.

Because of my diet, I'd like to take some sugarfree candies in my carryon or handbag. I know hard candies are usually okay, but these are the sf equivalent of York Peppermint Patties, Heath Bars, and Snickers, in much smaller versions, individually wrapped and sealed (Whitman's, York & Russell Stover) brand names.

Has anyone had candy bars (not purchased after clearing security) confiscated? What about "Twinkie" type snacks (sf ones don't have the creamy filling)?

I'm assuming that sealed packaged of nuts would pass inspection, but wonder about bag of chocolate covered ones.

It's hard enough to stick to my diet plane while traveling, so I really try to bring along a few "treats" of my own. BTW, I don't expect to be able to buy these in airports or on the ship. If anyone knows differently, I'd like to hear from them.

I don't see anything wrong with any of the treats you listed. That doesn't mean they will pass inspection, but they should. All you need is one TSA agent who is out of sorts that day.

We take snack crackers and MY Dark Chocolate which we buy before we fly.

Have never had a problem with any of the items.

It's just drinks that you can't buy and take through security.

I have never had a problem with any type of snack food in my carry on, but then I have never had my chapstick taken either, so it's hard to say. Just hope that you don't get a security officer who's having a bad day, you'll most likely be ok.

Good luck and enjoy your trip, it sounds wonderful :)

No issues with candies/bars/treats. Only liquids and gels.

My daughter has food allergies to all things dairy and corn (including things that are derived from dairy and corn), so we cannot rely on her being able to buy her anything once we get through security that would be safe for her to eat. As a result, we always pack a ton of food- sandwiches, fruit, nut mixes, cereal bars, home made banana bread, etc.. The only thing that was not allowed was a small container of apple sauce (original packaging.) They even allow us to bring on soy milk (I always offer to have her drink it in front of the security people.)

I would go ahead and bring the food and hope that you don't run into a security person who is having a bad day and is on a power trip!

Good luck!

Depending on the length of the trip, I even pack a lunch---complete with turkey sandwich, chips/pretzels, banana, grapes, etc. Took my EMPTY plastic water bottle through security and refilled it at the drinking fountain to take on the plane. I did have a friend that had to leave his YOGURT behind in the garbage (must have been to close to a gel consistency!)
You should be okay with your candies, etc. Happy journey!! Deb C.

I believe the difference with nail clippers is whether it has a small file or not. Those with the file are not allowed. That's a weapon don'tcha know!! :)

Except that I've gotten through with a matching set of nail and toe clippers---both of which have a file.

It's the inconsistency that's the bother.
A few years ago I left home, and was not allowed to leave my shoes on and get a hand search. Returning home five days later---shoes on was no problem! Two months later---at the same home airport---shoes on was no problem! There had been no changes in security level in the meantime.

For the sake of people with allergies, please reconsider taking nuts onto the plane. Is there something else of equivalent nutrition you could take instead?

When I went to Alaska a couple years ago, the Canadian security person in Toronto took a look at the mini sewing kit that I had in my carry on and noticed the small pair of blunt ended scissors it contained...you know, the ones that they use in kindergarten classes. He told me they were fine and let me go ahead. However, when I came up against a US security person in Vancouver (as I was connecting to Seattle), he took a look at them and then told me they needed to be tossed. Out they went! Guess the only scissors that would ever pass in all situations are plastic ones that can't cut anything.

It's hard to know with security at airports - when we flew out of Vancouver last time they waved us through and didn't check anything - not even Dh's CPAP machine - which is a first. Coming back through Ft Lauderdale the customs guy threw the machine back into the plastic bin - I was livid - those things cost $2000 and he is throwing it around! Fortunately it was ok.

They were very strict at Ft Laud and announced that no fresh fruits or vegetables, dairy products, meat products, vegetable matter etc. would be allowed and if caught the fine was up to $50,000. There goes a cheese or ham sandwich!

I carried dark chocolate bars and granola bars in my purse and they were no problem - coming home from the cruise, the pillow chocolates made it through in my carry-on.

AA allows nail clippers - didn't mention a file on them - also scissors with blades 4" or less so my fold up scissors made it ok.

The chocolate covered peanuts are in an unopened can, but I can leave them at home if the can won't protect the seriously allergic. The merona almonds with rosemary seasoning, from Trader Joe's, are in a strong, sealed plastic bag. I don't have to eat them on the plane - likely the hotel room after we get to CPH, and maybe, if any are left, with a drink on my veranda.

How about the peppermint patties and dark chocolate bars - are they likely to pose a problem because of allergies?

The only consistency is the inconsistencies!

They have take a slice of Key Lime Pie from us - in Key West! It was sold in the airport where everything is outside the secure area.

A couple of times I had forgotten to take the small Swiss Army knife off my key ring and sometimes it gets through and sometimes it didn't.

We have had chapstick taken away from one party and not from another - separate lines at the same security gate.
