Our cruise last week on the Maasdam was the last week of trays being used in the Lido. Thier stated reason was that removing trays is not just Holland America but soon to be industry wide. Research has proven that this will cut down on transmission of disease.

This weeks Maasdam cruise they will initiate different food stations. Such as Asian Wok, Italian, similiar to Lido on the Vistas and above and that will cut down on lines.

It is not my intent to start another tray thread but to just inform you of changes on the MS Maasdam.

I will be eagerly awaiting your observations .. I hope it works. I am most concerned how they handle the elderly - fortunately, we are not there yet, but those folks have a hard time now .. am curious to see how they fare with the 21st century Lido.

Perhaps HAL will put into place the better method from their sister line, Princess, and switch to the bigger plates that have solved the problem.
Or maybe they will resume the practice of assisting those who have too many plates and glasses. Maybe they should give a demonstation on how to carry multiple plates on our arm , ala waitresses, at the lifeboat drills.

on the westerdam a lot of folks, even the well bodied? had a look at what was on offer then sat down and collared (some quite rudely) a member of staff to get their food for them

I hope that Holland does NOT change the dishes in the Lido to those PLASTIC larger plates and HOSPITAL plastic mugs. sastra

We were on the 5/2-20 Volendam voyage (Japan to Alaska to Vancouver). The Hotel Manager indicated that they would be removing all trays starting with the next voyage.

On top of all the germ issues, I am pretty sure it will make it a little more difficult on the people that carry 5 full plates of food to their table for breakfast. I always wonder how they can consume so much food at one time and stay so slim and trim. Must be lots of time in the gym after meals.

Princess Lidos have been trayless since my first experience.
Available, however, are large china platters which hold a goodly amount chow. One soon learns a few workarounds such as slipping wrapped tableware in a pocket. :p
Ultimately, more than one trip is often necessary. That works well on Princess because their Lido buffet has totally separate stations.
HAL's serial arrangement complicates returning to cherry pick, even with "stations" you're still breaking in.

An alternative solution would be to use sanitizeable stainless steel trays. That works in military a mess hall, but it's probably too expensive for commercial applications.
