I am sorry guys but meatloaf on a cruise for dinner????? I am not putting down those who like or eat meatloaf as I make it from time to time for dinner myself, but never ever in any fine dining establishment or on any of my past 29 cruises have I seen meatloaf on a dinner menu!
To me that belongs on a luncheon menu or something you would get at the neighborhood diner (again not offending anybody its just my opinion), but they better have something more appetizing on the menu that evening than meatloaf.
Perhaps they also have chicken fingers and grilled cheese. LOL Sorry....but I am totally stunned to hear meatloaf on a dinner menu, thats all.....

Agree 100%.
Hang on to your hat, they also had chicken pot pie and fish and chips on recent cruises. Sounds like blue plate specials from the local diner.

I like it better when HAL lets me define my own 'comfort food'. For me it's rare prime rib, jumbo shrimp, and Alaskan crab legs, thank you very much. :D

I noticed this recently on the Zuiderdam. They had a "comfort food" entree every night for people who are the plain meat and potatoes type. I guess there must be some demand for it if they have dedicated an entree every night to it.

I have to laugh at some of the comments. Nothing wrong with meatloaf IF it is made properly. Most of what you get out is truly bad, but I have a killer recipe I got from my friend in Seattle, made with ground chuck and ground pork. Awesome--almost as good as filet!

I think the demand for meat loaf and other comfort food comes from the bean counters who are dedicated to the bottom line.

I saw it only once on my 10-day NE/C Rotterdam last month, and that was in the Lido. Did not see this or any other "comfort foods" on the dining room menu. As far as the bean counters go, if someone doesn't like it, or doesn't think it's appropriate, just don't order it; there are plenty other things on the menu.

That's interesting. Every day on the DR menu they had one selection that was labelled "comfort food". I didn't check each day, but I think it was only available in the DR, and not the Lido.
I also think that people are just having fun with this. Obviously, if for some reason someone did not want Meatloaf there were about six other entrees available (I had the Hamburger Helper).:D

There are people who are really, really picky eaters, and who won't eat things they haven't tried before. I feel sorry for them, but they DO exist.
My nephew is like that. Going with him to a really good restaurant is an adventure, to say the least. He's likely to ask for a hamburger and fries even if it's not on the menu. And then expect it to be like one from MickyD's (and he's NOT a child, he's over 30)
My daughter is almost as bad (and I didn't raise her that way, for sure). Her chicken has to be plain, she doesn't take dressing on her salad, and her hamburgers only have ketchup -- no lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, etc. Her pickiness runs more to healthy, well-prepared, organic, no heavy sauces, not fast food. She just likes things plain. But she'll try most anything, which is good.
I would think some of those things on the menu are to satisfy the fast food generation, many of whom wouldn't eat at all if they didn't get hamburgers, tacos, fries, pizza, etc. At least hopefully they know what meatloaf is. I suspect they may not have a clue what much of the other items are.

We are not meatloaf lovers and so we laughed when we saw it as an entree one night on the Statendam. Naturally neither of us ordered it. But I did keep track and it was offered only once in 21 days as an entree.
Since we didn't always eat lunch in the Lido I can not say whether it was ever offered there.

Having heard all your advice, I have reached the following decision. I will order either a grilled serloin or a griilled Chicken Breast.
When I have to order a second entree, that speaks volumes. I love meat loaf if it is made right.
We have "comfort food" every night. The other night it was turkey and was quite good. Last night it was quail---I'll make no comment.
Maybe I should just skip dinner. I walked over the RC Cathedral today and some local woman tried to hit me up for a buck for a candle. I said five extra minutes of prayer is better than a vigil light and she made a nasty remark about the size of my stomach. So, I think I will go walk a bit and build up an
appetite.
By the way some lady came up to me last night and said "You are 'HIMSELF'.
It is the first time I have ever been recognised since I came on these boards.

It's not always the younger ones. On Alaskan cruise we were at a table of 8: Mon, DH and I; an older couple from the midwest, and a younger couple with a delightful 11 year old son from California. The food was wonderful, but on the last day, lunch in the dining room included some sort of chopped sirloin. The older woman leaned over to the boy and said "I'll bet you're glad to see something like a hamburger after all this fancy food" To which he politely replied, "Actually I'm having the salmon quenelles. I'm really going to miss this excellent cuisine."
I'll bet the couple would have been quite happy to see meat loaf on a dinner menu. They might have liked the salmon "loaf" too if they'd known.

Now now, I might get flamed for this, but I'll take the risk. With all of the flack over the dreaded "meatloaf" on a high class menu, in the opinion of my late mother, the worst offender was beer of any sort.
Mother always felt that beer was the beverage of the lower classes and I was never able to change her mind. I told her it was the preferred beverage of Pharoahs, Kings and European princes, but she insisted that while may have been true in the past, beer was responsible for drunken brawls and domestic abuse today. She would not abide anyone drinking it in her presence.
Let me reiterate, this is my mother's opinion. Let me remind you she is deceased as of last March. I do find it amusing however, when I read this thread about "low class" meat loaf, to recall Mother's belief regarding beer and all of the previous discussions I have read about smuggling that paricular beverage on board our cruise ship.

I don't recall reading all those discussions about smuggling beer on board a Hal cruise ship, at least not on this board. Booze in general, yes, and I am sure beer was mentioned a couple of times, but I don't find this board to be full of beer smuggling threads.
There are plenty of comments on Meatloaf, since Meatloaf appears to be one of the current hot topics.
Comparing beer to meatloaf.
Beer was cheap at one time and probably the drink of choice by many of the "lower class" because of the cost.
Meatloaf is cheap and is still cheap.

Oh, every time I eat in Talliavant or Troisgros I always order beer with the meatloaf. I think it's very classy stuff!
Seriously, considering HAL's pricing policy -- dare I say 'punitive'? -- for alcoholic beverages on the ships, it's little wonder people 'smuggle' their own. I think $3 or $4 for a bottle of beer or $7 for a martini, let alone $60 for a mediocre Sancerre at dinner, is just plain not fair. $15 for a corkage fee is just short of nasty.

I love meatloaf - I truly do. So I ordered the HAL meatloaf - gotta give it a try, right?
It was the foulest stuff i've had in years. Looked and tasted like the inside of a home-made Oscar Meyer hotdog or bologna.
If the meatloaf was yummy, i'd be all for it - but not this stuff. I'd rather have a Hamburger or a Club Sandwich from room service (which, incidentally is quite good - they even cut the crusts off for you just like Mom used to...)

Two days ago my wife asked, as she was about to prepare some hamburger for dinner, "What would like for dinner, spaghetti and meatballs or meatloaf?"
"Meatloaf!" I replied. I choose meatloaf so that I could have a meatloaf sandwich for lunch. And I had a beer with it!
Now if HAL would just get a good meatloaf recipe, I'd do the same on a cruise and have a tall, cool beer along with it!

My DH ordered the meatloaf on the Oosterdam last week but requested an end piece well done. This was because our DSIL who had it at an earlier seating described it as mushy. DH, who is a meatloaf lover, was pleased with his choice, although he was quick to add , it was not as good as mine.:)

Just back from the Rotterdam yesterday. Yes they did have meat loaf on the
menu, but it was in a new catagory called Comfort Food that they had every
night. They did not take anything away but just added this catagory and also
one called Pasta Pasta, which was a different pasta dish every night. Also
added a Ceasar Salad every night. We found the menus in the DR to be much
improved and the service also.

I don't recall a "Comfort Food" category on the Oct 20-30 sailing, so it appears to be brand new, as is the Pasta Pasta selection. I do remember having Caesar Salad, but not as a regular offering; maybe once or twice. Sorry to hear your cruise is over.

Thank you so much for the new menu information, Gayle. I think these new options certainly reflect the appointment of the new Executive Chef in Seattle that was announced a few months ago.
We felt that 'salads' were one of the weakest nightly choices in the dining room and Caesar every night, rather than just on formal nights, is wonderful. Also 'Pasta Pasta'- another area that had much room for improvement! :p
Could you tell us more about Comfort Foods in addition to the meatloaf, please.

Thank you for sharing about this new category on the dinner menus. This must be brand new as you are the first to be reporting it. That's great that we have the most current 'what is happening aboard'.
I'm DELIGHTED if they will start offering pasta as a choice each evening. Did you happen to note if whole wheat pasta was available or was it just the regular white?
Keeping my fingers crossed this is to be fleetwide and not just something Rotterdam is offering.

Was just looking at the menus from our Dec. 2001 Southern Carib. cruise on the Noordam. On most menus there was an item with a little hand symbol next to it which indicated "simple fare". This was fish and chips, turkey with gravy, pot roast (with a Dutch name), etc. No meatloaf, but definitely comfort food by another name.
Not sure I care about the pasta addition to the DR menu since that has been available at the pasta station on the Lido for lunch. But if it makes some folks happy and I still have plenty of seafood or meat dishes to choose from, I'm content.

I really don't understand why anyone would want to list COMFORT FOOD as an item on a cruise ship menu. A cruise is a dream, an adventure, great fun. Comfort food?
I want comfort food (which I personally consider to be homemade Mac & Cheese) when: 1) I've had a bad day at work; 2) I've had a bad day at work and sat in a traffic jam for more than an hour on the way home; 3) I've had a bad day at work and sat in a trafic jam on the way home during which it started to sleet, then ice, then snow; 4) I've had a bad day at work and sat in a trafic jam on the way home during which it started to sleet, then ice, then snow, and when I get home I have to shovel the driveway because the snowblower won't start.
Those are some of the things that happen that make me want comfort food.
Oh, wait! Those are the reasons I moved from Michigan to Savannah, GA!
Sorry.

A meatloaf does have 2 ends. And if they throw it in a skillet and cook it a little longer it does not come out mushy. "End Cut, well done" does not have to apply only to prime rib. It worked.........DH liked it!! Laugh all you want!:D
