We have just been upgraded from a guaranteed inside category K to outside obstructed view cabin on the Zaandam.

Has anyone ever had one of these cabins, and, if so, are the views fully obstructed? This cabin is on the lower promendade deck toward the stern.

Thanks for any info!

Hi Melanie,

If you go to Holland America's website at http://www.hollandamerica.com/pdfs/fleet/za_lower_promenade.pdf
you can see exactly which rooms are fully obstructed.

The first 2 or 3 rooms in the bow are almost "inside" rooms as the bow area of the promenade is enclosed. There are 3 or 4 rooms near the stern where there is a large structural piece of steel that blocks the view but the absolute stern is open so the promenaders can watch the wake. There are also 2 or three other places where major structural components of the ship may block virtually all of the view. Check out the website and you can pretty much figure the room numbers with the least amount of view.

Hope you get one of the better numbers!

For most of the "obstructed view" cabins you can look either forward or back and look out across the ocean. Even if there is a structrual member directly opposite your window, you will still receive natural light, which to me is preferable to an inside cabin. Another plus to these aft cabins is that they are probably under the dining room, which means that they will be pretty quiet at night and early morning.

We had a forward obstructed view LP cabin on the Volendam once and heard quite a lot of noise from the show lounge. Suspect they practice various shows late at night.

I have stayed in one of these "obstructed view" cabins. It is a great value. You can see the ocean by looking right or left. You get natural light shining in. And best of all, you pay for an inside cabin.

I've had one of them; they're really nice. The windows are one-way, so you can parade around all you want and nobody can see you.

Thank you all for posting such good information. Now I'm REALLY excited. I just may do the Doc Dance all over again.
