We're getting close to taking our Alaskan cruise. I don't like to gamble, but my husband likes to blow about a few bucks a day trying his hand at the slots. Just from my observation, it seems like he wins more at the beginning of the cruise. Anybody else notice the same or is he just taking more losing risks as the days progress? I wonder if they 'hook' ya at the beginning, and slowly lower the odds over the course of a cruise.

the short and sweet answer is "no" your chances at the beginning of a cruise are no better than later. been there, done that, tried them all:)

Payouts from slot machines are based on 2 numbers:
1. The odds set in the machines.
2. The amount of money fed into the machines.
If a machine is set to pay out 30% and $10 is fed into it, it will pay out $3.
If $100 is fed into it, it will pay out $30.
Quite often, passengers tend to drop more cash in the Casino at the beginning of the cruise than at the end. If that happens on your cruise and you are playing slot machines, there will most likely be a higher payout at the beginning of the cruise. And if that happens, there is no guarantee that the extra payout will happen to be on the machines you are playing.

If a machine is set to pay out 30% and $10 is fed into it, it will pay out $3.
If $100 is fed into it, it will pay out $30.
It is quite possible that you can put in $100 and get $0 out in the short run. Or get $500 out on one spin! In the long run, the % will hold true. I have seen others hit jackpots during a cruise as I help bring the % down the the long run numbers.

I have not noticed a difference during the duration of any cruise so far.

Having just come off the Statendam, we noticed strange slot behavior. For the first few days the Midas slot was paying off like a drunken sailor. Everybody was winning on it. I was wondering how long this could go on before the difficulty was reset. Toward the end of the cruise the machine was more stingy than you can imagine. Chance??? Maybe.
But the machines can be set for payout. This particular machine took in paper currency but paid out in coin. Therefore, every so often it had to be refilled with coin. This creates a log which shows the casino operator how much they are putting into this particular machine. Did this cause them to change the payout? I wouldn't be surprised.
Can you imagine someone playing a penny slot and getting back $44 on only $1 in play?
Whether or not they do this on purpose is another matter. This machine was very popular for a long time. It wouldn't surprise me if they did.
