Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/1-carnival-magic-guest-allegedly-attacks-another-with-bar-glass/ According to local news in Norfolk, someone attacked a fellow passenger with a bar glass in the theater. They got confined to cabin for the rest of the cruise, and once the ship made it back to Norfolk, were passed off to police. Always amazes me that people think doing crap like this won't end very badly for them.
  2. Same here. I hope this doesn’t happen in a few weeks when it’s time for me to check in!
  3. Given the time frame, I figured either: A) Helicopter med-evac, and police boats were making sure other traffic steered clear, or B) Passenger(s) got rowdy or some type of criminal behavior, and someone was getting handed off to NPD for a private cruise back to port.
  4. The city has majorly improved security at the parking site after the issues they had. It does suck that you have to park offsite though. There’s really no adjacent land that’s undeveloped. They could always look into expanding an existing parking structure vertically. The cruise terminal will be closed from this November until February of 2025 for “improvements,” but they haven’t announced what that will be. Just that they’ve agreed to these improvements as a condition of Carnival home porting year round. This year, they have substantially improved their port operations. I live near the port and frequently watch the goings on. Rarely do the lines of either cars or people get too long. It used to be a total cluster-!*#%. Not sure what they changed, but it’s definitely better. I usually have friends drop me off a few blocks from the terminal and walk if I’m cruising out of Norfolk. And for non-locals, you can check with downtown hotels about parking deals. Some offer to let you park during the cruise, and are walking distance to the port. You have to pay, but it’s not any worse than the “official” lot.
  5. I’d love to read that too. Do you have a link to it?
  6. Magic is underway again, so whatever it was, they sorted it. She was stopped for about 30 min.
  7. I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. Cruising out of Norfolk is fabulous. Done it four times and going on the Magic next month. Starting in ‘25, we will be a year-round home port. (About time!)
  8. Carnival Magic departed from Norfolk a little while ago, and I just noticed she’s come to a stop in the River, near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. She’s now surrounded by several police / military police boats. Anybody on board know what’s going on?
  9. I've been on the Splendor twice. She's a GREAT ship! Overall, Splendor is VERY similar to the Conquest-class ships of the fleet, but slightly larger. The two main differences are Splendor has a much larger Spa, with the thermal suites & thalassotherapy pool, as well as the sliding dome cover for the mid-ship pool. Otherwise, you'll find similar amenities & venues on the rest of the Conquest-class, as well as essentially the same layout. As far as other older ships: Fantasy class is much smaller, with fewer amenities and venues. But also nice in that they feel less crowded than the bigger, newer ships. Spirit class is about halfway between Fantasy & Conquest as far as size. Doesn't have every feature of the newer, larger ships, but they're really great, classic cruise ships. Dream class & newer will feature all the amenities you had on Splendor, plus more. But IMO, their newer ships pack too many people in compared to the public space. I think Splendor landed in a real sweet spot of ship design as far as size, what's offered on board, and how many people they cram in.
  10. Bravo! Do you know if it’s fleet wide now, or just on the ships with the new menu? I dug through Heald’s Facebook and didn’t see anything about it. You are totally right about the striploin. Tough, chewy, with poor flavor. I wonder where in the cow it comes from. I had it on the Horizon in 2021, and I couldn’t finish it. Tried it again on the Splendor in ‘22, hoping it was a fluke before. Again, it was so bad I didn’t finish it. I’m going on the Magic in September, so I hope they offer it then! If not, I’ll just avoid the steak option in the MDR.
  11. Thank goodness! The strip loin was terrible. Love a good flat iron. Where did they announce this?
  12. Mostly identical ships as far as layout and amenities. Liberty has better decor & theming IMO.
  13. I’m very curious to hear how busy the Alchemy Bar is throughout the week. I’ll be boarding the Splendor next week. The first few cruises I went on with an Alchemy Bar, it was usually pretty quiet. Became my favorite spot. But last Summer I was on the Horizon, and Alchemy was party central. I never spent any time there. I guess it had been discovered. But it being super busy sort of took away the charm of sitting and chatting with a friend or two and the bartenders, and having them mix you special drinks that felt personalized.
  14. It’s not age. Some people just suck. If I’d done it at 21, I’d have been attentive and delighted by the chef.
