  1. Regarding Gibralter, when they tell you not to feed or touch the apes, believe them. One member of our group (not Viking) did not heed that advice, got bitten, was hospitalized, and had to leave the tour.
  2. I've done 4 crossings on the Star Clippers ships. One was eastbound and 3 were westbound. The weather is marginally calmer on westbound, but eastbound was fine too. You can't go wrong either direction on these ships. We have made lifelong friends on the crossings.
  3. That happened to us as well. A week or so before departure we were offered an upgrade from a PV3 to a PJS2. I think the cost was about $500 pp. We jumped on it. The upgrade cost was much less than the cost difference at the time we originally booked.

I was shocked to find that when I booked award business class tickets on American, all of the flights were codeshared with BA. And BA required even business class to pay to reserve a seat. Otherwise, take your chances when you check in for the flight. And the fee was not cheap--about $100 per seat going and $180 per seat returning. Outrageous! Still, we paid it and filed it under "in for a dime in for a dollar."
  5. Also don't miss The Berghoff Restaurant. This German restaurant has been a Chicago landmark for well over 100 years.
  6. We were, upgraded to a penthouse Jr suite on the 7th deck a couple of years ago and loved the location. So we booked 7014 for Hawaiian Islands and Polynesia. So happy to hear all those positive comments!
  7. Well, I have to say that Jim Avery's post was an eye opener. If Viking tells their employees that gratuities are included in their pay, then as I see it, they get no bigger paycheck whether or not you tip. So I am tempted to take the suggested amount and give it directly to the staff that I interact with the most (adding to it for exceptional service), and having the gratuities removed from my bill. DH and I have always tipped extra to our room stewards, waiters, and bartenders, as well as paying the billed gratuities. But now I'm having second thoughts.
  8. And I'm on the May 6 London to Bergen on the Sky. May 2024 will be a popular month!!
  9. Does anyone know if Viking will allow you to come back to the airport to pick up your transfer if you fly in the day before? I don't expect them to pick me up at a hotel, but I would like to fly in a day or two early before our BIE tour. We are on the pretour that starts in Oxford, and I'd rather take the free transfer that is included with the pretour instead of paying my own way to Oxford. But we would like to come in a day or two early in case of any delay problems.
  10. Based on the various reports, I decided to call. Really glad I did. Both of my booked cruises now include the voucher insurance and at no cost to me. One of the cruises had $3000 in vouchers, and the other only $400. Still, very happy with the outcome and kudos to Viking.
  11. Thank you janetcbl. You've saved me a phone call. No way. I figured if it was maybe $10 or $20 more it would probably be worth it. For $1000, I'll take my chances that I don't cancel.
  12. The email I received included: "We are writing to inform you that we have made improvements to the Travel Protection Plan offered by Viking for guests residing in the United States. Should any unforeseen circumstances arise, the new Travel Protection Plan will not only protect your cash investment, but it will also protect the value of any Viking vouchers applied to your voyage. We see that you have already purchased the Travel Protection Plan and want to ensure you can take advantage of this upgrade and the expanded protection it provides. For a limited time, we are offering guests the opportunity to expand your travel protection by opting into the new Travel Protection Plan. A Viking representative will be able to advise you of any increase to your premium prior to your decision. Guests residing outside of the United States are not eligible for this opportunity. Terms and conditions of the Travel Protection Plan can be reviewed here. To take advantage of the additional coverage the Travel Protection Plan upgrade provides, you must opt-in by April 22, 2023. Please contact your Travel Advisor or Viking at 1-877-668-4546, between 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, PT. Thank you for choosing Viking. We look forward to welcoming you on board."
  13. Just received an offer from Viking (limited time through April 22). Viking Travel Protection Plan will now cover Viking vouchers. Must call them to find out if there is an additional cost. I have two cruises booked, and both insured through TripMate (Viking's plan).
