Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Perhaps your best option is to hire a taxi at the port (there will be many there waiting) and ask them to take you on island tour. They should take you from the West End (the port) out to the far east end (Pt. Udall) and then make their way back through Christiansted where you could walk on the boardwalk and poke into shops. Then have him drive you to Cane Bay so that you can have lunch at The Landings which I am quite certain has an easy entry. From there, he could drive you through the rainforest back out West. The driver would know how to take you to a grocery store as there aren't really any I would recommend in F'sted town. Another option would be to take a taxi one mile north of the pier to have lunch at Rhythms at Rainbow Beach. Great food and a nice view of the beach. Go early as it will get jammed on a cruise ship day. On the taxi ride back to the pier, ask the drier to take you to Plaza West/The Market or Stop and Shop for groceries (will be 10 minutes or so out of your way).
  2. I’ve never heard of Paradise Beach. Perhaps it’s the nice beach that is adjacent to FortFederik if so, it’s a nice beach with bathrooms and couldn’t be closer to the port. Doubt there is great snorkeling there. Better snorkeling in Frederiksted can be found at Sandcastles resort. Hubby was there the other day and saw a Ray and two turtles.
  3. We are seriously considering booking a Silversea cruise in October 24 that circumnavigates Japan in a clockwise direction. I was thinking that it would make sense to choose a cabin that is on the starboard side as we might see more interesting things than just the ocean from our cabin. Is that really a 'thing' in Japan? Or should I just pick the best location on the ship without regard to which side?
  4. Thanks for the helpful response. We do have some options and will upgrade if necessary.
  5. Terry, I hope you are spending some time in Singapore too. We spent four nights there last November and loved it. Feel free to be in touch if you need suggestions (ccrosner@aol.com)
  6. We are considering a cruise that circumnavigates Japan in October 2024. Will want to book a Veranda cabin. Don't have issues with motion sickness but don't like to smell cigarette or cigar smoke on our balcony so we know to avoid proximity to the Connoisseurs Corner. Most of the classic veranda cabins appear to be near or adjacent to "crew areas" that show in white on the Deck Plan. Should we avoid these? Happy to pay a bit more if it means we will have a quieter room.
  7. We are probably going to book this cruise for October 2024 so I will be following along. Thank you! It sounds as though you have visited Japan before. Given that, do you think this is a good itinerary for someone looking for a good overview trip of Japan (we've never been before)?
  8. The Annaly Bay Tidal Pools, while beautiful and unique, should not be visited without forethought and caution. If the water is rough, you could put yourself in grave danger as you try to climb up and over the jagged rock face to access the pools. Add that to the fact that there is very little cell service out there so it could be hard to get help if you need. With that said, I'd suggest you try to see if Tan Tan Tours would offer a tour to the Pools. They are the only tour company that I know actually goes out there.
  9. Are you coming in on cruise ship? Usually they aren't in St. Croix during hurricane season but perhaps this year is different. I would think that you could find a taxi van (almost all STX taxis are vans) at the foot of the pier and could arrange for him to take you to both places (which are only a few miles a part and both on the Melvin Evans Highway). Here are the rates I found: https://www.*****/stcroix/getting_around_stx/taxis-rates/
  10. My email is ccrosner@aol.com if you have other questions. We spend our winters on STX.
  11. The reason it's so expensive is probably because the Buccaneer is the nicest resort on the island, is at least a 30 minute drive from the pier and their beaches are beautiful. Actually interested that they offer an excursion through Royal Caribbean. If you are looking for a nice day at the beach and don't care if you see more of the island than just F'sted, you might look into booking a day pass at Sandcastle on the Beach. I believe they charge $40 on cruise ship days and that gives you a chaise lounge, a shared umbrella and access to their pool, clean restrooms and the beach. They usually have a beach server who will get your drinks and their lunches are nice. You can walk there from the pier.
  12. Sorry for the delayed response torpeedo. The cruise ship pier drops you right into the small town of Fredericksted (maybe take a look at Google Satellite photos). At least a block of Strand St. is closed to cars on cruise ship days so you should be fine with the scooter. You might try taking a look at the Caribbean Museum for Creative Arts on Strand St. as they do have a few galleries right on the street level.
  13. Here are your options with chair rentals: Rainbow Beach Sandcastle on the Beach - $40 day pass includes a chaise lounge, pool access, small table and an umbrella shared between two people. Sometimes they have beach service for food and drink. If not, good food can be ordered To Go from the bar. The Fred - not much of a beach there but convenient. Haven’t been in two years so don’t know how it’s faring. Beach just north of the cruise ship pier - on cruise ship days there are chair rentals and probably food vendors. Restrooms have been recently restored but I’ve never been in one.
  14. This is an incredibly helpful report for cruise visitors. We spend our winters on St. Croix and can confirm that this was a great overview of the middle and western ends of the island. If you can find a tour that will also take you out to the East End and Point Udall, you will enjoy that too. Thanks for sharing.
  15. I will try to be helpful as I spend winters on St. croix. Sandy point is supposed to be open on cruise ship days but I’ve never tried. Perhaps the taxi drivers would know. If you do go, make sure that the taxi will come back to get you as its about a two mile walk back to the pier if they don’t. there is a nice beach just to the north of the pier and they rent chairs, have refreshments on cruise ship days. you could also go to Dorsch Beach adjacent to Sandcastles but no chairs to rent. We really like a day pass at Sandcastles but it’s only $15 on non cruise ship days. if you don’t care about renting a chair, you could get a taxi to Rainbow Beach and ask them to take you just north of there to Cowboy Beach. We were just there today and it’s just lovely. But no services.
