Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Only been on one gay cruise; the inaugural Vacaya cruise to Ptown/Canada, a few years back. We had been curious what it would be like because we'd heard so much about Atlantis and RSVP and it's emphasis on partying. Admittedly was a big partier in my 20's and well into my late 30's, but that ship has sailed (pun intended). We had heard Vacaya was intending to move away from the constant thumpa thumpa thumpa, go-go boy sort of activities we had always heard about and decided to check it out. Discovered the cruise was just like every other cruise we had been on; the only difference was the entire passenger roster was all LGBT. We would do it again.
  2. My husband and I have never met any truly unfriendly gay singles or couples. Some might want to be left alone and that's cool. Rest assured, friendly as I an, I still absolutely love my "me" time. Some folks tend to be very shy or have social anxiety, which can come across as "stuck up." Who knows? I can say that neither of us are remotely shy, both very outgoing, and happy to meet and chat with anyone, gay or straight. But we also are very cognizant that sometimes people don't want to chat or whatever. And that's totally ok and not for us/me to figure out why. I do recall on one of my solo cruises several years ago, I was at one of the bars when it was fairly empty. I was sipping a martini and clearly reading my Kindle. I was admittedly really into the book (huge reader here). A guy sat next to me and immediately struck up a conversation. I didn't close up my Kindle but chatted briefly, was polite, and when there was a lull, I started reading again. He noticed. Another guy sat next to him, and "lo and behold" it was his husband. They stage whispered to each other that it figured the "pretty boy was into himself". *****? I closed my Kindle, smiled, and said "nope, not into myself. I was reading (waggled my Kindle towards them) and was in the middle of a good part of the book." They were clearly embarrassed when I called them out and moved away. Saw them later on and the original guy called out to me "read any good books lately?" with a smile. Ended up chatting and having cocktails with them the rest of the cruise. Nice guys that made the wrong assumptions. It's easy to assume someone is stuck-up or conceited, when the reality can be far, far different. Don't make assumptions.
  3. My husband and I, and two other couples, are on the cruise you're talking about. We've done it a few times. As previously mentioned, Bar Harbor is the only tender port. It is an absolutely beautiful picture postcard perfect New England seaside town. No need to book an excursion if you want to stroll around; there's plenty to see and do. Nevertheless, I would still encourage you to consider taking a tour/excursion and check out Acadia National Park; it's absolutely beautiful. And you'll still have time to see the sites afterward on your own. Portland is nice, with things to see near the port. Same with Halifax, with an added bonus of a pretty lively boardwalk. St. John is ok, not quite as nice, a bit more industrial, but you can still walk around for a couple of hours. As another poster said, bring along a light jacket or sweatshirt. We've gone in late August every time and I do recall a couple of chilly, drizzly days. And on one particular evening, it got FOGGY onboard the ship, which I admittedly thought was kind of cool. After a couple of cocktails, I found myself strolling the deck, quoting Adrienne Barbeau in The Fog.
  4. True, but you can definitely order food while sitting at the bar. Done it many many times.
  5. When we sail alone, we generally stick to just the Haven sundeck. But when we travel with friends (all of whom refuse to pay Haven prices), we always get Vibe passes so we can hang out with them when we like.
  6. If you were to take a car service, yellow cab or an Uber, you'll have plenty of time to get to LGA provided you do leave the ship first thing. We about a 15/20 minute drive from LGA and whenever we've disembarked from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, we generally get off right away and have, strolled into our apartment and getting unpacked by 9am at the latest. My only thought is that you're using the NCL transfer. Their buses won't leave the port until they're full, which can take a while, which will cut into your transfer time.
  7. Sounds like you're looking to go back to the terminal after seeing a show? If so, avoid the pedicabs that are always parked just outside when the theaters let out. Ridiculously expensive. I would suggest you walk a block or so away from the theater and order an Uber. Otherwise, you'll be hard to spot amongst the large theater crowd when your car arrives.
