Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I refuse to place my order until my pre-dinner drink arrives. I've had food with no wine too many times, and I prefer champagne before my meal.
  2. Oh, I'm glad. The machines were always out of quarters. I hope they won't be out of tokens! As for quarter tips, not sure how much they would be appreciated.
  3. I am sure that in the past Princess ships used quarters for their machines, because I was on a ship where there was a quarter shortage. My next cruise I brought a couple of rolls of quarters and I had people drooling over them. But I have seen posts where people make reference to "tokens." Have they done away with quarters?
  4. Could someone share the coupons? I don't need a wine menu.
  5. I've taken four transatlantic cruises over the past two years. They are my favorite way to do nothing, catch up on my reading, and see a few ports. It is very substantially cheaper to by a round-trip ticket from Europe to the USA than the other way around. In fact, the round-trip can be cheaper than a one-way ticket. Add to this the fact that most airlines now allow free ticket changes, and the best strategy is to take a USA to Europe cruise in the spring, then buy a round-trip ticket home. In July or August, search cruise fares for a cheap Europe to USA cruise, and if you find a deal, see if you can change your airline ticket dates and take advantage of the bargain. I've done this the last two years and am doing it again this year.
  6. I think it is a sales technique. When they are priced like that, very few people will book insides and everyone will see the balconies as a great value and book them. As the ship fills up they can raise the rate on the balconies.
  7. I strongly suspect the house edge on cruise slots is at least 12%. I think Princess offers a VP game with a 96% return, and maybe they have better. So even if you have to play twice as much money, VP is the better option, assuming you are willing and/or able to learn how to play video poker.
  8. I took two NCL transatlantics last year and wanted to take the waterslides, but it was just too cold. But my preference is that there would be no waterslide at all.
  9. The $60 includes $16 a day in gratuities, so you are really only paying $44 a day. For most people, this makes the Plus package a great deal, but for those who drink very little and don't like wifi, it's best to skip it.
  10. Your mistake is that you failed to calculate the actual cost of the cruise. I always add in the cost of the Plus package, because you can't cruise without it unless you are a teetotaler and hate wifi. Do note that aside from the Plus package, I spend almost nothing on the ship. I rarely take a ship excursion, as I prefer to do things on my own. I eat most of my meals in the main dining room. I never buy anything from the gift shops. I don't buy photos. With that said, there is no way for you to avoid adding some expense to this trip. As for the cost to get to the ship, that shouldn't be a surprise to you. Fourteen days is a really long cruise. I know it is a bitter pill, but you might be better off just losing the 600 pounds and booking a much cheaper one-week cruise. Or, just pay up and have a good time.
  11. That's true. People were taught that Crisco and oleo-margarine were healthy. In fact, they aren't at all, so everyone has switched back to butter unless they can't afford it.
  12. It actually matters a lot. Most middle-class people would never use oleo in their home because it tastes bad. It used to be illegal to dye it yellow to keep unscrupulous companies from doing exactly what Princess is doing. As long as they charge First World prices they should be held to First World standards.
  13. I logged onto the Princess site and saw that I was eligible for a number of free cruises, onc of which was a transatlantic. I really like transatlantic cruises, because they are long and cheap. And free is the best kind of cheap. Anyway, after I did some fare searching a Princess rep called me, and I decided to just book the cruise through her. After a while she said she couldn't book it as a solo, and said they weren't allowing any solo bookings on that cruise. I find this odd, since these cruises tend to be low capacity. I then tried to just make an online booking, and it lets me go to the very final page, and when I click to pay it tells me there is an error and to come back later. I've done this repeatedly. I really don't understand why Princess is not able to price their product in such a way that all people at least have the opportunity to book at whatever prices they choose. Does anyone have any experience with booking a phantom person? I might book my brother to go with me, but I doubt he will go. At present my cruise cost is $339, with a $200 stateroom credit. Adding an mythical second person will cost $339; I think $139 will be refundable. Can I pay $60 or $80 per day for Princess Plus/Premium after getting on the ship?
  14. Contra, the wife is not trying to force you to squander the family fortune!
