  1. I loved that ship, as I loved all the S- and R-class ships. Those were large cabins, even in the cheap seats, comfortable ships, and so easy to get around. But from what I read on your 'live from' thread, I think I wouldn't be happy sailing her as she is now. It is clearly not the Ryndam I had such good times on. Thank you for your posts!
  2. Since HAL doesn't 'handle it' with so many other egregious actions of passengers, what next when they say they can't do anything about this?
  3. Restaurant and bar/lounge staff are in two different tipping pools. Restaurant staff draws their tips from the daily gratuity charge, while bar/lounge staff draws theirs from the 18% added to drink prices. However, this does not prevent people who work a specific area from coming to an informal agreement within their area to pool additional tips. The crew in CO on one ship, on one cruise, could have and agreement to pool all additional tips, while on another ship, or another cruise on that ship, might not have that agreement. Same for the bar/lounge crew on any given ship, at any given time. Once you have given an additional tip to an individual in an area, it becomes their money. At that point them following the informal agreement, if one exists, is beyond your influence.
  4. Saturday is going to be tough. Good luck with your embarkation. After that you will have earned a drink. Have a really great cruise.
  5. Love the tux! Love the gown!! Love the pic!!! Thanks for posting it. 🙂
  6. I'm sorry, but I really am not yet in a position to judge. The program hasn't been in effect long enough for people to have been displaced, and for us to know under what circumstances. I do know that many of the J-cabins on Main Deck on the Noordam are for two people, but are connecting cabins to a cabin for four, or three---good family areas. I would be concerned that a larger family might want the two connecting cabins---the double for the parents, and the one for 3-4 for the kids. So even booking the double might not be safe. I think since your cruise is quite early in the season, and is a longer cruise, the demand for the cabin you have might not be there. I hope this works out for you!
  7. I highly recommend you wait until after your last drink on the last night of the current cruise before you have that conversation. 😉
  8. I know I saw passengers approach the liqueurs at that station, glass in hand, and proceed to pour themselves a drink. No doubt that kind of behavior helped shut down the ice cream topping choices.
  9. I head up the main street (turn left off the ship) and stop at the Alaska Fudge Company to stock up on some great chocolates. Then, heading back to the ship, I go to the Red Dog Saloon for a drink and a good time. There are plenty of other places to walk to in downtown Juneau that could be of interest. Just checking out the side streets that are flights of stairs is interesting!
  10. I DO line my suitcases with drycleaner bags, covering all six sides. I'll never forget the time I opened my suitcase to find some dampness on the inside, and was glad it was only the plastic, and not the clothes. If it was a reference I once made, I am glad it helped you out.
  11. Tux looks good. Will you be wearing it later on in the cruise? I want to see pictures if you do.
  12. As far as I know, yes, occupants of balcony cabins are supposed to stay inside, too. One difference is their doors are not closed off, and they can get out there. I remember a cruise with very high seas for a very long time. A friend and her husband were in a balcony cabin, and he went out to watch the storm and the waves. She was screaming at him to get inside! She was still a bit terrified as she told the tale!
  13. I have usually docked where Jim noted, but I have also docked elsewhere. I was surprised to find the ship around the bend once. Not at all far away, but because of the bend, the usual place was out of sight. Confused me for a couple of minutes. In both cases the ship was right in the city. If you are going to the fortress, there is an interesting Resistance Museum there. Well worth a visit.
  14. Yes. If an area of the promenade is closed for tender use, work on the lifeboats, etc., that area is closed off from passengers, and that includes passengers who have cabins in the area. I expect if the entire promenade is closed off due to sea/wind conditions that also means ALL the passengers in lanai cabins as well are not supposed to go out via their cabin door.
  15. Sleep that sleep one can only get at sea, Kathy. I wish you a blissful cruise, leaving it with the confidence that your next cruise will be possible---and even better!
