Norwegian Spirit Rough Seas

At approximately 4:45pm today, the Norwegian Spirit suffered damage to the windows of 4 cabins, as well as one of the restaurants. There is one passenger injured, who is being treated in the Medical Center onboard. At this time, the captain intends on arriving at New York tomorrow at the normally-scheduled arrival time. This will probably receive media coverage, at least in the greater NYC area. Details are still sketchy, I will keep you all posted if I hear of any more developments.

I was in Atlantic City for the past few days. Looking out at the ocean from my casino hotel room window, I saw the ocean was very calm on Tuesday as the sun was shining. I hoped that when I go cruising on the ocean in April the seas will be as smooth.

When I woke up today, Wednesday, the wind was howling and the rain was pouring. The ocean had turned angry. There were white caps as far as the eye could see and the water was a lot closer to the boardwalk than it had been the same time the day before. The ocean was churning terribly and I thought about all those on the Spirit heading back home and praying that I don't have to deal with this in April.

I hope everything turns out all right for these passengers.

Where was the ship when this happened?

We live outside of Philly and it has been incredibly gusty the past few days. Winds gusting 40 mph on up is unusual this time of year. I don't know where the ship might have been around this time but I would imagine that anywhere near the mid-Atlantic states must have been really bad.

We are taking the Spirit in April too. This is our first time doing the NYC to Florida route. Is this a normally rough route? Would it compare with NYC to Bermuda? I would imagine time of year really matters as well as experience with a somewhat bumpy ride.

I also live outside of philly in delaware county PA. I will be on the Spirit on May 14th out of NY. Is this a good time to cruise compared to later in the summer as far as rough seas go? Also, what time do you suggest leaving to arrive at a good time to the cruise terminal?

I think it's luck of the draw. Last January, we were on the Dawn from NYC to the Eastern Carib. and the seas were pretty calm except for one day. Pretty lucky, I guess. We'll see how lucky we are on Sunday!

SInce we were on the Dawn last year when it was hit with the rogue wave and are now scheduled to sail on the Spirit in April, I am quite interested in this story. I live in the NYC area and have NOT heard any news stories on this. Please post if anyone finds any.

We have done four 10 and eleven day winter cruises out of New York in the last three years and have yet to encounter really rough seas. I would like to remind nervous winter cruisers that the rogue wave that hit Dawn was not in winter and the hurricane season is not in winter. I look forward to boarding the Dawn again on Sunday and I much prefer sailing south in January to flying south and wondering if a snowstorm will cancel my flight. I know a snowstorm will not cancel my winter cruise out of New York.

I'm right there with you, Dolphin, and no matter what, at least I'm not at work!

If you leave at after 9 and before about 1, it should only take you about two hours. An easy drive . . . just check 101 FM for Jersey traffic.

The Atlantic can get rough at any time. Earlier this month we had some rough Atlantic weather on the Dawn, but Bonine works. From June on through Nov-Dec you are in hurricane season.

Now admittedly, I am not the most thorough person, but I have been checking the following for info

MSN, NY Times, Cruise Critic News, Cruise Diva, Cruise News Daily, Maritime Matters, AOL News, and NCL.com

and I still see nothing about the SPIRIT being damaged.

Did something really happen? I am sure it will not dirupt the voyages, but I am still interested. Especially since I leave on the SPIRIT on the 29th.

I know after the DAWN incident she never stopped cruising, so I am confident that if something happened the SPIRIT would keep on chugging. But, NCL had a statement up pretty quickly.

We just got home from the 1/8 sailing and we did hit extremely rough weather. We went back to our cabin on deck 5 portside at about 5:00 yesterday (Wednesday) and encountered winds in the hallway, with all kinds of ships personnel, so we kind of guessed at what had happened. The seas were listed on the TV ship info at about 27 to 42 foot waves and the captain eventually came on and said the winds were about 75 mph. We did have waves breaking over the top of our window, and it definitely took out one of the cabins, about 10 further aft from us. That was the only one we knew of, but the captain in his announcement said windows, so I guess there were other rooms affected too. I also heard there was damage on deck 6, and to the Garden Restaurant. I didn't hear of any passengers hurt, but I did see a crew member who was hurt apparently while trying to replace the window. A few minutes later I spoke to my next cabin neighbor who said that another wave had hit the area, water sloshed into the hallway, and that was when the crew member got hurt. Just to give you an idea, the room tv was one of the first things removed from the room, apparently thrown off the wall, and dripping water when I saw it.

As we were preparing to disembark, they were still tearing apart the room, I guess to rebuild it before tonight's sailing, and I spoke to someone who was in a suite on deck 11. They had a lot of damage due to the rolling of the seas, the entertainment center came down, and stuff got thrown all over.

The rough seas and winds started as soon as we left the last port of call, and abated only for one night. So it was a rough ride down, and a rougher ride up. Ahh, winter in the North Atlantic. If I could have printed them up on the spot I would have paid for my cruise by selling t-shirts, "I survived the Norwegian Spirit".

The seas notwithstanding, we did enjoy the cruise, the food and the entertainment (which started out real slow, but improved greatly as we went on).

I forgot to mention that we went to eat, and then to the final show, and when we came back to the room the window had a metal plate over it. This morning as I was leaving I did check another room all the way forward and it had a plate over the window too.
