Renting Scooters in Hawaii? Which Island if any?

Has anyone rented scooters? Which island would be best if any? Any rental outfits close to the pier?

I have never rented them myself, but there is one in Kona right across the street from the pier. They also rent Harleys there.

How good are you with a scooter??? Had a friend who did this and it cost him over $2500.00. He had a MINOR accident (about $300 anyplace other than Oahu) with a car, rendered the scooter inoperable according to the rental agency, and his credit card with billed $2568.00 for damages, loss of rental, etc., etc., etc.

There are plenty of places to rent scooters-Maui and Oahu are best. But make sure you know what you are doing. Could be a costly vacation.

Scooters MIGHT be useful on Oahu if you're going to be in Waikiki (might be useful to get from one side to the other quickly). But otherwise, I really think cars are better (safer, carry more things, quicker).

I'd think scooters would be pretty limited in where they could travel. Certainly not on any of the Interstates, and even some of the other highways might be a little scary. I'd agree with Spleen, a car would be a better option. While there are safety issues with a convertible, it's a much safer option compared to a scooter. Just curious, does Hawaii have a helmet law?

I "think" we have a helmet law but not many follow it if we do (at least here on the Big Island). I see people riding scooters and motorcycles in shorts and slippahs...and I try not to think about how many of my friends have died or been badly hurt on them.

Nope, Hawaii does NOT have a helmet law (I should know, I'm a formerly licensed motorcycle rider - (lost it in the paperwork shuffle when I was moving from state to state)). It probably should.

Thanks Spleen for the clarification. If they have a law that you can't sit in the back of a pickup - how come they don't have a helmet law??

Actually, there's no law that says that you can't sit in the back of a pickup either. There's been efforts to pass one in the past but it's been defeated by people claiming that it would discriminate against people with no other forms of transportation. It's definitely not safe - but not illegal AFAIK.
