Pompeii and Capri, can we do this?

We are scheduled to be in port from 7am to 7pm. We are going to go to Pompeii on our own. Since we will be there until 7pm I was wondering if we would have enough time to go to Capri too or would this be too much? Any suggestions?

I am a former crew member for NCL and I did a tour from Naples that visited Capri in the morning, then Sorrento for lunch, and Pompeii in the afternoon. I am not sure if you would be able to fit it all in on your own though.

From Naples, we took a high-speed catamaran to Capri and then a ferry to Sorrento and bus to Pompeii and back to the ship.

You may be able to pull it all off if you rented a car, but I would do Capri first and Pompeii later (if you are docking in Naples).

Which port is your ship sailing into? Some of the smaller ships will drop anchor in Sorrento as well, in which case you would be right to do Pompeii first and Capri on the way back.

Hope this helps.

I looked into this and decided that it would be too much for one day. We went in 2009 and I booked a driver and guide to take us to Pompeii, which was a highlight. The guide was with us in Pompeii and was superb. We also got tickets to see the house of Meander, which was wonderful. An intact home that was well preserved. From there we drove down the cost to Sorrento and had fun exploring a few little towns. It was a beautiful view and I was so glad to have a driver. Here is the communication from the tour company, Drive Amalfi:

Private Shore Excursion from the Port of Naples on Saturday June 20th with DriveAmalfi the acknowledged specialists in Tours from Naples.

Our most popular Tour is of Pompeii and The Amalfi Coast which typically includes a 2 Hour stop at the legendary ruined City of Pompeii (where you you can choose to hire a Licensed Pompeii Archaeological Guide, take the Audio Tour or Tour on your own) followed by a tour of the spectacular Amalfi Coast which includes the picturesque towns such of Amalfi, Positano,Sorrento and Ravello and of course the stunning 'Amalfi Drive' one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the World. We typically stop off at a Medieval hillside village near Ravello to enjoy lunch in a small inexpensive local family restaurant way off the beaten track with extensive views of Ravello and the Coast. Your itinerary is entirely flexible and can be tailor-made to your personal wishes.

Should you require the services of a Licensed Pompeii Archaeological Guide for your visit to Pompeii the cost is 100 Euros for the 2 Hour Guided Tour and I will be pleased to arrange this in advance if require with payment for this being made directly to the Pompeii Guide. Entrance to Pompeii is currently 11 Euros per person

As you will be aware these are exclusive Private Tours and cannot be compared in price or itinerary to regular Cruise Line bus tours and using our expert local knowledge and passion for the place we live we allow you to visit places, meet local people and experience things that Cruise Line bus tours simply cannot.

The cost for 8 passengers is 650 Euros excluding lunch and entrance fees. The price is per Van with your Tour being conducted in a fully air conditioned, microphone equipped, 8 Passenger seat Mercedes V Class Limovan that offers you maximum comfort and visability.

It appears they also do a tour of Capri with Pompeii and Sorrento http://www.amalfi-drive.com/cruise_ship_service/Capri_sorrento_pompeii_tour.html

Romeinlimo charges 600 Euros for 8 passengers to Ravello, Positano and the Amalfi coast from Naples in 2014.
