That's a potential problem with outside cabins on lower decks. I remember having an outside cabin on the lowest deck on the Millenium and the ocean seemed like it was really close. I think it would have been kind of scary if the waves had been hitting our window.

Until Adventure of the Seas - (Aruba/Curacao)

When I was 15 (I won't say how long ago that was) I was doing a north atlantic crossing with my mom and sister on a Cunard ship. We were in a wicked storm. Everyone had been warned to stay inside, under no circumstances were any passengers to try to go out to a deck. Most people, including my mother and sister were in their cabins being seasick. I was lucky, I didn't get sick. However I sure wasn't going to stay with them.

I was up on the top deck wandering around and decided I should see if I could go outside. My god - talk about a stupid kid!!! I struggled the door open, put my foot over the ledge when two things happened at the same time. I saw a wall of water coming over the bow of the ship and at the same time a crew member grabbed the back of my shirt and hauled me back in.

Boy, did he lay into me!!! At that point, I was so scared from what I had seen, I didn't open my mouth.

The ships back then were a whole lot smaller than they are now.

That is something I will never forget.
