Mariner points

I have been looking at mariner points and know that you can earn more with your onboard spending. One of the things mentioned was shore excursions. My question is what happens if you purchase your excursions before you go. Does this expenditure count?

On a related note, if you make onboard purchases that are 'covered' by OBC do you earn credits for these as well, or only those you pay cash/credit for?

 

There is no difference it's total expediture whether OBC, cash, credit, etc. either way it is value that you had now given to them.

How much do you have to spend to get credit? How do they decide whose # to credit to for each stateroom?

Every $300.00 spent earns 1 additional point (up to the number of nights sailed, so if on a 7 night cruise you can only accumulate an additional 7 points and need to spend $2,100.00) for both persons in the stateroom/folio (it does not included 3rd and 4th passengers). Casino spending is not added but the hotel charges/tips are.

Hi,

We were booked on the Eurodam for a 20 day Med cruise, but due to the volcano did not make the trip (flight turned back). Inquired about mariner points credit and was informed that as we did not do the cruise we are not eligible for the points. HA did not mind keeping the money for the cruise though...........

Is HAL"s insurance available outside of the US? I don't think it is but that is too bad as it is cancel for any reason and would have paid back 90% in cash/credit card if canceled within 24 hours.

The points for spending has been in effect since the program started last Oct or so. To check your total (and points from past cruises), log onto the HAL site, go to My Account, and click on My Mariner Status on the left side.

I wish too and I'm not kidding! :eek::D Unfortunately they didn't go back and try to give credit for suite days or for on-board spending before the new program started last year, in September or thereabouts.

This started about a year ago. The 'points' for onboard spending isn't retroactive, that is you won't receive points for spending prior to the start of the program.

 

You can check your Mariner days (including 'spending' days) on-line at the HAL site.

I was reading HAL's insurance plans -- from what I read -- you must have a letter to HAL 24 hours before you cruise in order for the policy to take affect if you need to cancel.

CPP Standard Plan

Our Standard Cancellation Protection Plan (CPP Standard Plan) will allow you, for any reason, to provide written cancellation up to 24 hours prior to scheduled cruise or cruisetour departure and receive a refund equal to 80% of the eligible amounts paid (90% if you purchased our CPP Platinum Plan). In addition, Holland America Line (HAL) automatically assumes an additional US$500 of liability for lost, damaged or delayed baggage of passengers who purchase the CPP Standard Plan still subject, however, to the limitations in our baggage policies. For example, we do not cover losses while baggage is in the custody of airlines.

Thanks for all the great info. I didn't realize that the hotel charges/tips can go towards your mariner points. That's great as that can contribute over $150. towards a mariner point for 2 people on a 7 day cruise. Should we add the additional tips that we plan to give individual staff who provide us great individual service, i.e. waiters, cabin steward, concierge, butler, etc. That amount would match and could exceed the standard amount that is applied to everyone's portfolio. We would not want to do this if it might cause difficulties for the employees as it would defeat our purpose of the additional tip. This is an "all things being equal" question.

 

Again, thank you for answering the original post and adding even more good to know things. This is our first cruise and it is so nice to be able to get info and feedback from the folks who have done this before. We don't want to do not enough, too much or nothing at all ...... but there is so much to know!

If you mean cash given in addition to the Hotel Service Charge, then no, that does not count toward Mariner points. If you increase the HSC amount then it would.

did you have any kind of travel insurance thru HAL or other carriers... sounds like you didn't...

I have found it impressive how fast the Mariners points get credited to our account following each cruise. I checked two or three days after we returned from our Maasdam cruise and those cruises were already added into our totals.
