and tip the cab driver too...

There is also super shuttle that is about $18.00 per person...

http://www.supershuttle.com

Car services will run about the same as a cab. try either Carmel limos(which has coupons on its website or Arecibo 17187836465.

You can do it for $7.00 per person put personally with luggage I wouldn't. Take the airtrain to the Jamaica Station(5.00) Take the E train to 50th street Manhattan(2.00) and take a bus(free transfer with a metro card-not the two dollar one fare ones)to twelveth avenue and 49th street.

Hi,

I have never cruised out of New york before and I am wondering what is the best (cheapest/easiest) way to get fro JFK to the port? We are thinking about going on the Gem in the Spring.

Thanks for your help!

I am from NYC originally and advise, a Yellow Cab.:)

The cheapest:

New York Airport Express Service Bus: (718) 875-8200. Departure every 20 30 minutes. Bus Terminal, Grand Central Station, Penn Station. Fare is $15.00. Bus stop located at the Express Bus Stop at each terminal.

Take Express Bus to Port Authority.

M42 Bus (Westbound, sign says PIER) from NW corner of 9th Ave and 42nd St.

It's actually faster and cheaper to get to the Port of New York from Newark Airport than JFK. People don't believe it, but it's maybe 30-45 minutes from Newark depending on traffic, and at least 90 minutes from JFK.

If you are going from the Brooklyn port, JFK is closer, but not the mid-town Manhattan port.

We live in NJ and will do almost ANYTHING to avoid flying in and out of JFK--and since Continental virtually OWNS EWR, you can go just about anywhere.

Easiest is a cab or car service. Plan on $55 to $60 including tip and toll. Cheapest is bus (and most hassle) or SuperShuttle which can normally be counted on to take forever with lots of stops.

On the way back cab is really the easiest and quickest.

90 minutes from JFK? Well that depends. We got in on a Friday night and were in our hotel in 45 minutes. When we went back from the ship is was 40 minutes from the ship to the terminal.

Conversely, it can take much longer from Newark if there is any problem at all with the tunnel. I've also had some pretty high cab fares from Newark.

It's a big metro area, traffic is also a concern. On any given day one or another of the options could be the best, or the worst. If you are flying in on Saturday or Sunday morning then JFK should not pose many problems.

The cheapest way from JFK to the port costs $2.00 with a MetroCard purchased in advance, or $4.00 otherwise.

From wherever you land at JFK, ride the AirTrain free from that terminal to the International Arrivals Terminal (Terminal 4) station. From there go outside and go to the far right-hand side of the terminal building (assuming that you're looking at the terminal building from the roadway in front). You should see a bus stop there, and you'll want to board route Q10. If you don't have a MetroCard already, you'll need to deposit two dollars in coins only into the farebox. Ride all the way to the other end of the route, and alight on Kew Gardens Road in Kew Gardens, Queens. Walk forward and around the corner, and enter the subway station there. If you used a MetroCard to board the Q10, you will be get a free transfer into the subway by swiping your card at the turnstile. Otherwise, pay another two dollars at the vending machine (coins, bills, credit cards) for a subway ticket. Once past the turnstiles, board the "E" train towards Manhattan. Alight at the 50th Street station, and emerge onto Eighth Avenue. You'll then need to walk four avenues to the west to arrive at the port.

Mind you, the above is the cheapest way to get to the port, but it can be quite cumbersome if traveling with heavy luggage. With light luggage it is very doable, and I would view it as a mistake to take a taxi or airport bus unless time is at a premium.

Hope this is helpful, or in the alternative, at least interesting enough to read.

N.B. Actually, a cheaper way if you do not already have a MetroCard is board the Q10 and ask for a bus transfer when paying the two dollars. When alighting at Kew Gardens, the bus transfer will let you board the Q60 bus on the opposite side of the large intersection, and that bus will take you all the way into Manhattan. The problem is that the bus route ends at 60th Street & Second Avenue, and you need to get all the way across to 12th Avenue.

Also, be careful about asking directions to the "Port." This word is sometimes used as shorthand for "Port Authority," meaning the main bus terminal for New York City!

Taxi, $45 flat rate plus tip. Did use Super Shuttle with good luck going to the port but a long time getting there (shared ride with many stops) and used a taxi coming back. In the future will stick with the taxi. Taxi van was nice and comfortable.
