I certainly would NOT mind the experience of departing NY on ship that is all covered with snow and watching it melt on the way to the Caribbean!

We went on Hurtigruten cruise one winter (Xmas and New Year) and half of the cruise was above the Arctic Circle where the sun never showed above the horizon. We loved it - we had noontime twilight and 24 hour moon, and of course the Northern Lights. When the ship was below the Arctic Circle we had 2-4 hour sunrise - sunset. It was an unique experience for us. We went on the same summer cruise the year before and had 20-24 hour sunshine and it was so great that I said we gotta take the winter one to experience the opposite.

Hurtigruten is the cruise that sails within Norway between Bergen and Kirkenes. I can see Uppity is going on one in 2010!

Barb, thats what we were expecting on our Alaskan cruise on the Star..instead all we got were sunshine..

and those pics..just reminds me that im a warm weather person..:)

that is SOMETHING...so do they shovel the snow over the sides...just curious...as if it is left to melt that could be a MESS:confused:

I am a reformed former lurker. I just tend to shy away from the social networking sites. Anyway, just curious if anyone knows what happened to Shoreguy? I remember following his Pearl transatlantic blog posting and have not seen him on these boards again. Just curious.

I so remember this cruise! We were coming into NY - this was what we came back from after being gone days in wonderful warm weather! NYC was CLOSED down! We were hoping that the captain would stay down around Virginia for an extra day or two...no such luck.

Was NOT fun entering NYC when it is CLOSED. Geeze.. try to find a hotel. FINALLY about 7pm we got a room and transportation to said room. What a mess!

Not a great way to end a fantastic vacation! LOL However, it certainly was memorable!:rolleyes:

I was on that cruise .. most of snow was shoveled into the pool to melt. Some was just banked around the deck gutters. The snow started to melt rather quickly. The biggest problem was the ice and snow sheets that would drop unexpectedly from up high, such as from the roof outside of the star bar. Snow didn't seem to be too much of a problem on the balcony, just a inch or so of drifting near the rail and perfectly clear by the door. It certainly turned out to be one our best cruises ever despite the challenges of getting to the pier.

LOL we drove through that storm to Charleston for a Western Carib on the Majesty. I was never so glad to see the sun and dry roads. We couldn't get out of either of our local airports. They were open but the roads to get into to them was packed end to end with cars that were stuck. :eek: We ducked sheets of ice coming off rigs from PA to NC.

Monday first half day at sea

I thought I would post an update while still sober – 12:15 and pulling up anchor – new itinerary – all the same ports except GSC only a day late. Full day in Jamaica. Shore excursion will be interesting.

Most onboard are having a great time. Free rum punch in the casino 11 – 12 currently free drinks at Spinnaker until 1 .

Muster drill at 10 am so are Meet and greet went on as planned at 10:30. All those we were worried about made it to the ship. I have heard as many as 800 passengers never made it. We had at least 50 show up for the meet and greet – Alex and Toni F&B Director showed as well. Hugo as you might guess was tied up with those that think NCL is responsible for the weather.

By all reports we a lucky they let the Dawn dock at all. We could be still sitting at the pier while the last cruise was still disembarking. e bad news- camera still mia –the good news I may for the first time get something for from my travel insurance.

We are underway – got to make the last half hour of free drinks and off to the martini clinic at 2 pm

PS I disembarked the Dawn the same day that Shoreguy embarked. Yes it was snowing.

Once as the Gem docked in Civitavecchia (Rome) in the Med it started to rain. Then it POURED. Then it hailed. The Gem was covered with hail and looked beautiful all covered with white. The Philipino crew were fascinated as most of them had never seen snow/hail.
