SS United States Sold

S.S. United States Conservancy has finally bought the S.S. United States, tied up in Philadelphia for a reported $3 million. It seems Philadelphia, Miami and New York are the front runners for a Queen Mary 1 type use for the old girl. Good luck to them.

Thanks for that news. I forgot about the old girl. NCL had owned the ship for some time, actually. They were going to refurbish it and run it on the Hawaii routes because she'd be one of the few ships that were both flagged and built in the US.

I said it from the day they bought the ship and said they'd refurbish her that the only reason they bought her was to keep other cruiselines from buying her and giving NCL competition in Hawaii.

Just my opinion but I believe they never had any intention of refurbishing her.

This news makes me very happy. Now the next chapter can begin. I never thought about Miami being in the running! I always thought she'd look nice tied up along side the Intrepid in New York. What a great pre-cruise hotel. I think that would set the tone for a cruise leaving New York.

I'm glad shes no longer in danger of scrapping, but I really want to know where she will end up

SS United States trivia: In 1963 the BigU carried the Mona Lisa back to France after a U.S. art tour.

The SS France (aka SS Norway) had brought the Mona Lisa to the United States prior to the tour.

The Mona Lisa had her own stateroom, with guards, both ways.

...and/or to hold as a "surrogate" (along with the SS Independence) to allow the temporary re-flagging of two of NCL's foreign-built ships for use in the Hawaii market.

And a BIG hi and hug to all of you. Did Barb ever forward the pictures to you I took in Le Bistro? We didn't get to Bermuda last year but hoping for this year.

I know it would NEVER happen but what could be greater than having the SS United States restored and she sailed to Bermuda out of Philadelphia? :)

I'm glad to see that the sale has officially gone through. Now the hard part comes with keeping up the payments on the docking charges and the expected refurb and upkeep. I hope the ship stays in Philly since the local people from the area have had to look at the ship rot on the Delaware for years now, and I'd like to maybe someday enjoy the site of her again as she once was.

I'm hoping that they can turn her into a hotel/casino like the above article referenced since the proposed Foxwoods site has become a dead issue.

It is the USS Olympia launched in 1892 and became famous as the flaghip of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War in 1898. The ship needs a desperate refurb from being in the water of the Delaware for years.

I wish both of the ship's backers luck and hope they don't end up as scrap metal in some foreign land. It would be a real shame.

The triple masted ship behind is the Moshulu. Yes, it is in Penn's Landing area. It has been turned into a fantastic restaurant.
