I respect your opinion, but several other NY natives have told me gypsy cabs are fine except in Manhattan.

They have what the locals call gypsy cabs. Basically they are non metered cabs(not yellow cabs) who offer you a flat fee for a ride. I am going to NYC next month and plan on using one of these cabs...

9am is fine. The porters simply put your luggage in a different area then for those that are disembarking at the same time. I do agree that tipping them well is worth it for peace of mind.
