What are the designations for the ships? ie CB, etal. I know that these have been posted before but I can't find them.

Yes - Crown Princess is KP. I'm not sure I've ever revised the list that's already been posted above, but maybe I ought to do it now.

Now that the website's ships page lists the ships in alphabetical order, this is the current list of official two-letter ship designators. You can see the designator in the URL for each ship's page.

The two letter mnemonics are assigned by Princess, and probably are related to their maritime radio identification/call sign.

Thanks for clearing it up. Now I feel silly for calling the Tahitian TP. we can leave the TP in the bathroom from now on.

Is this official list something that was made by Princess? ... how did these initials originate?

The list wasn't made by Princess - I just took the list of ships off the website and put the letters next to them. As time has gone on, I've re-ordered the list to match the current website list order, which has changed from time to time.

 

But the designations are definitely official, as you can see them all over the website, in different contexts - chrysalis has pointed to one of those places.

 

We had a discussion a short while ago about why they are how they are. I suspect that an "original" list a long time ago may have been much more sensible. But as further ships came along with the same initials, different letters had to be chosen.

 

For example, someone asked why Regal Princess was GP (see the August 2007 list, one post up from the current list). One obvious answer was that the earlier Royal Princess (not the current one) was already in the fleet and (probably) already RP. So something different, yet memorable to Princess staff, had to be picked: hence Regal Princess.

As a matter of interest, Princess has recently announced that Tahitian Princess will be renamed Ocean Princess. This will take place while the ship is out of service during a routine maintenance period in Singapore in November 2009. What's the betting on the two-letter designator remaining the same, and causing yet further confusion in years to come? :)
