Molde, Norway...which road/tour?

Recommended Posts

Trying to decide between two tours while we are docked in Molde. Both are Shorex (via bus). The real decision is which route...one along the coast and the other inland.

Anyone that has been to Molde...and have done either option???

Trollstigen Mountain Road

The Atlantic Road

We are sailing on Celebrity Eclipse July 7, 2012. (Other ports in Norway are Geiranger, Flam & Bergen)

TIA

I actually did both of these as ship excursions. I did the Atlantic Road from Molde and I did the other one while in Alesund. The Atlantic Road trip was ok, but probably my least favorite of the entire 12 day Celebrity cruise. It wasn't bad, just not particularly memorable. The one bridge you see in the pictures of the road was cool, but not spectacular. If you have to pick one of them, I would pick the Trollstigen Road. It's a beautiful roadway. Unfortunately, the highest part of this trip (the one shown in the website where it overlooks the valley) was totally covered in misty fog when we were there. We could barely tell there was a valley below us. So if you go, I hope you have the weather shown in the picture on the website. But I still would vote for Trollstigen.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! Between that and your wonderful photos....you helped make my decision very easy.:)

We will not be driving, so I am not concerned about the heights and hairpin curves of the Trollstigen Road. I hope we get a clear day too...but was lovely even in the fog/cloud cover.

My gut feeling was to see as much "inland" Norway as we could. But we may never be able to visit Norway again...so trying to make wise choices.

Thanks again for your advice!

The hair pin curves were great fun. Those bus drivers know how to do it right. It wasn't uncommon to have to wait for other vehicles and in one place there was a bike race (bikers going uphill) that we had to work with. It was very interesting to me. I was a little concerned on the Trollisten drive because the fog was soooooo thick looking from above. But once you were actually in the fog, you could see a the things near you. And the busses go quite slowly at that point, so I never felt endangered. Our 12 days were unfortunately almost all foggy/overcast at some point each day. We had a little bit of clear sky here and there. But I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat. You can still tell it's beautiful surroundings in bad weather. I hope you enjoy your trip as much as I did.

I see that you sailed on Constellation a year ago. We are new to the cruising world and are embarking on the same cruise in two weeks. What's your opinion on the ship's excursions vs. doing it by ourselves? Any advise or recommendation?

Our ship arrives 8am and departs 9pm.

So we have quite a lot of time and there are six of us, 4 adults and 2 kids.

I was thinking of self-drive instead of ship's tour.

If I'm going to drive, where should I drive to during this time?

Suggestions?

Turns out that we decided to go for a long hike, from the cruise ship all the way up to the varden peak and back down again.

It took us quite a while, with a lot of walking, but it sure was fun. At least we had a great way to burn off those calories. A real fun hike, loved it.

I made 3 videos, do check them out to see what a beautiful day it was. The walk down was much easier than the hike up.

Varden peak - 222 peaks on a clear day.

Walking down part 1.

Walking down part 2.
