Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Promotes Adam Goldstein to President and COO

Veteran executive will lead drive to 'take advantage of our global scale and knowledge' MIAMI, April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Adam Goldstein has been named president and chief operating officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE, OSLO: RCL), the company announced today.

Goldstein, a 25-year company veteran, had spent the previous 12 years as president and CEO of the company's largest cruise line, Royal Caribbean International."Adam has played a key role in growing Royal Caribbean International, step by step, into a global leader. In the course of doing so, he has become an impressive leader in his own right," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "In this new role, Adam will be able to put his broad worldview and strategic insights to use leading our varied cross-functional teams."

As well as working with Fain on the company's strategic direction, Goldstein's portfolio will include Human Resources, Information Technology, Supply Chain, Corporate Communications, Safety & Environment, Government Relations, Guest Port Operations and Commercial Development. "We believe that it's important for our brands to have their own personalities and business plans," Fain said. "But it's also important to pursue best practices, and to make sure that the insights we learn within individual lines can be applied to the entire company's benefit. When we do that, we are a stronger business," Fain said.

Goldstein said he was looking forward to the challenge.

"Royal Caribbean was a five-ship company when I arrived here, and today we are many times larger than that," Goldstein said. "We now have more than 60,000 employees taking our guests to every continent of the world, as well as the most technologically advanced ships at sea. Goldstein begins his new responsibilities immediately, Fain said. A search for a new leader for the Royal Caribbean International line is underway. In the meantime, Goldstein will assist with transition while he also takes up his new responsibilities.

Goldstein joined the company in 1988, and served in a number of positions before taking the helm of Royal Caribbean International, including Senior Vice President, Total Guest Satisfaction; Senior Vice President, Marketing; and Corporate Secretary to the company's Board of Directors.

Goldstein is a member of the Washington-based Energy Security Leadership Council. He served on the board of the Travel Industry Association of America (now the U.S. Travel Association) from 1993 to 2012, and is a member of the advisory board for Our Kids, which is engaged in foster care and related services for Florida youth.

Goldstein graduated with honors from Princeton University. He also has a law degree from Harvard University and an MBA with distinction from the French business school INSEAD. Goldstein and his wife have two children and live in Coral Gables, FL.

I'm sure that this is part of the succession plan that Richard Fain spoke about last year to prepare for his retirement. I'm sure that AG will be taking over that role. Probably the first move.

At first I couldn't figure out why they didn't say why Richard Fain was leaving, until I read in another story that this is a newly created position for the company.

I met him by the stand up Flowrider on the Allure and got a picture taken with him.

I told him I cruise Royal because of the Flowrider.

This was on 30 January 2011 and he was on board just for the afternoon. They were shooting short film "The Allure of Love".

I have always liked the way Adam Goldstein ran Royal Caribbean. We will miss him and hope that his replacement is just as fair as Adam was. Congratulations mr. Goldstein on your promotion. You deserve it.:)

I wish Mr. Goldstein all the best in his new role as President/COO. I can only imagine the new improvements that Royal Caribbean will have under Mr.Goldstein. Congratulations on his new appointment. I really like the way Mr. Goldstein is running Royal Caribbean. He really does listen to the customers and tries his best to implement their ideas.

I agree with all the posters! I think it is a well deserved promotion. I fired off an email to Mr. Goldstein during the Carnival Triumph nightmare, hoping the Royal Caribbean Management would be watching and taking notes. Hoping they would start a "plan" and some "what if's" just in case. I know things happen, but so far Royal has stepped up for me. We were on Allure in 2012 when it had a small fire (we were constantly kept informed by the Captain and never felt unsafe). Also on the Navigator recently when we were held up due to the oil spill and came into port late. (Also informed every few hours on the latest information). Even when things are out of their control they try to make ammends and call and check up after the event.

By the way --- Mr. Goldstein replied the very next day in an email and addressed my concerns and assured me they were already at the "Board Room Table" and working on scenarios as best you can for unplanned circumstances - if Royal was to ever face such a crisis. This is why we stick with Royal Caribbean. It works for us.

RF has not announced a date for retirement. RCCL put a succession plan into place so that when the day comes people will be in place to step in.
